JockStrap studio 3 session

I had heard about JockStrap through Scooter who played in the original line up of the band. Recently they released a new recording called "Worthless Life" and so I reached out to the band about doing a session. Lots of those songs appear in this session. The band features:

Liam on vocals
Lester on guitar
Misha on guitar
Ian on Bass, and
Michael (from Gawker) on drums

So we recorded the following songs:

Guilt Parade
Let Me Hang
Pig
Wraith
Breeders
Worthless Life
Sentence

We asked the band to record a CIUT and EXD ID and the also did an interview. The session was recorded by Ian Wilkinson and video taped by Aldo Erdic.

System System studio 3 session

System System are a three piece from Hamilton featuring members of Sick of Shit and former members of Black Eyes Club, where the band's name comes from, to Gunnar Hansen, Never Trust, the Invertebrates, Dismantle, SoniCrime, and others. The band features Nate on guitars and vocals, Jon on bass, and Grant on drums. The weather outside was warm but the heaters inside were working over time so the space was hot. The band set about recording the following songs:

1. Through the Window
2. F for Effort
3. High Fives and Shotguns
4. Everyday
5. Voluntary Confinement
6. Zero Light Emission
7. Spectre
8. Home Sweet Home / My Problem

9. CIUT ID
10. EXD ID

We also did an interview with the band.

The session was recorded by Ian Wilkinson.

The Protruders studio 3 session

I have heard people talking about the Protruders and guest hosts have played some Protruders on the show in the past. In the Pure Pressure interview I learned that Rob, the guitarist, played in the Protruders. I learned after the session that Joe and Isle were travelling down to Mexico for an indefinite amount of time and that we should try and record and interview them before they make their move so we set to getting them in here. So Rob set up about making this happen on the band's end and I worked out the station's end and we met on this day. The band features Joe on guitar and vocals and Isle on drums and vocals. They were in a band called Kappa Chow from Sackville, New Brunswick. Jarrett, is from Vancouver and met Joe and Isla in Calgary and approached them about being in a band. When they all moved to Toronto they ran into Rob and the line up was formed but both Jarrett and Rob were playing bass. Eventually they worked it out so Jarrett played bass and Rob played second guitar. But Isle plays stand up drums which is different than most drummers and adds to their unique sound. Joe's vocals remind me of Doc Dart from the Crucuficks. The band has quite a few recordings together with some more coming out which can be found on their bandcamp page.  Tonight we recorded the following songs:

1. Subway Crash
2. Controller Controller
3. Hot Glue
4. Ugly
5. Tax Evasion 101
6. Hydro-Phytol-Oxy-Plastick
7. Poison Future
8. Principal John

The band also recorded multiple IDs:

ID 1
ID 2
ID 3
ID 4

We interviewed the band after the session.

All audio was recorded by Ian Wilkinson. Aldo, from Punks and Rockers recorded the video and this was the first time he did a love stream of the session so the video below is missing some audio until someone uses a mic.

Pure Pressure studio 3 session

Pure Pressure is a hardcore band from Toronto that takes their inspirations form the straight edge sound. I first found out about them from the SHEXD crew and we featured their demo in July 2016, which was a couple of months after they released their demo. Karla was on the last episode of SHEXD and she told us that she was moving away after Not Dead Yet so we worked to try and get a a studio 3 session scheduled with the band before they broke up. It is unsure if the band is breaking up or not but they have a studio recording to release so there is more to happen with this band. The band features Karla on vocals, Rob on guitar, Greg on bass, and Nolan on drums. Rob played in Severe and currently plays in the Protruders. Greg played in Violent Future and currently plays in S.H.I.T. Nolan is from Calgary and played in Desgraciados and currently plays in Siyahkal. So the members in this band are busy, but who isn't these days? The band recorded the following songs:

1. Intro / Negative Peace
2. Searching
3. I'm Not
4. Witness
5. Open Case
6. No Conscience
7. Same Old Act
8. Delusional
9. 10.28
10. Tides

Pure Presssure recorded an ID for CIUT and an ID for the show. We also did an interview.

Ian Wilkinson recorded this session in our hallway outside of studio 3. Aldo Erdic recorded the session by video.

Alien Boys studio 3 session

Alien Boys are a great new band from Vancouver and released a 7 song recording called "Self-Critical Theory".

I found their recording through the MRR review on their bandcamp page. Then Erin wrote me about them coming on tour and I knew her from the Rebel Spell and hadn't realized she was in the band so it was a happy coincidence. Alien Boys worked this session into their schedule and we worked on a few new songs, a few songs from this recording and some improvised IDs.

So the band also features Sarah on vocals, Erin and Alex on guitar, Megan on bass, and Lindsay on drums. The members came to talk about how they came to join Alien Boys. We get them to talk about their songs in depth, their influences, their name, their scene, Vancouver and a myriad of other topics. You can hear the two parts of the interview here.

Part 1
Part 2

The songs recorded include:

Freebird
Self-Critical Theory
Gentrification
Anthem
Debasement
Just Another Piece of Acid

CIUT ID

This session was recorded by Ian Wilkinson in the CIUT Hallway. More photos can be found on our facebook page.

Outcry studio 3 session

I met Rosie a year and a bit ago on SHEXD. She did a set of music on Haligonian punk bands and we spoke about trying to get Outcry to come in and record a session. Well tonight this plan came to being. I almost met Steve, the guitarist, when we did an interview with Alienation, but he was too sick to come in. Steve plays in a lot of bands from Halifax as do Adam (Bass) and Johnny (Drummer). It's rare that we get out of town bands into the studio so in the interview (Part 1 and Part 2) we took every opportunity to ask about the goings on in Halifax. More photos can be found on our facebook page. Look for the Outcry album.

The songs recorded include:

1. Chatter
2. It's a Joke
3. Walking
4. Weekend Night / History Lesson
5. Soldier Soldier
6. War Aesthetic
7. Screaming
8. New One
9. Process

They also recorded a CIUT ID and an EXD ID.

This session was recorded by Ian Wilkinson and video taped by Aldo Erdic from Punks and Rockers.

Sick of Shit studio 3 session

Sick of Shit are from Hamilton. Earlier this year Schizophrenic released their first ep titled "Fuck You Volume 1". The artwork of the cover is done by Darren Cosgrove. The band tells us the story of how that came about in an interview we did after this session. The band Nate and Grant who have been into the station before with the band Gunnar Hansen and Black Eyes Club. These two guys have been in a handful of other bands from Hamilton which include Sonicrime and Dismantle. Adam is originally from Georgetown before moving to the Hammer but he played in a band with the guys from Wretched Fools. Ian Wilkinson recorded this session and he recorded the following songs:

1. Time's Up
2. Second Coming (Battalion of Saints cover)
3. Damage
4. Eyes of the Hated
5. Saving Grace
6. Brain Drain
7. Lifestyles (Poison Idea cover)
8. Hidden Hand

The band also recorded a station ID and a show ID.

Punks n Rockers has a video of the session available:

Blank Stares studio 3 sessions

Blank Stares are a new band that features some people who have played in other bands and moonlight in some other bands. Taras was the drummer in Riot99 and City Sweethearts and was the person who set up this session. Tara is originally from Edmonton and played in a well known band called The Glory Stompers before moving to Toronto. Well it turns out that the keyboard player, Andrew, is originally from Edmonton but they only found out in the interview afterwards. Andrew also plays in Century Palms and brings a real new wave element to the sound. The band's ring leader, Travis, played in Terminal Licks and had guest-hosted a tribute show to Vassil who he played in Terminal Licks with. Vassil played in City Sweethearts so Vassil seems to be a common denominator between Taras and Travis. Mikey is the bass player who plays in First Base and runs Hosehead Records. Mikey shares a love for the Undertones with Travis and all these little things are what helps build the chemistry among the players and makes this band work.

It was Travis's birthday so the band held a little surprise celebration.

We recorded the following songs:

1. I've Been Trying
2. Lonesome Nights
3. Summer's Here
4. Sirens
5. Dark Ages
6. Won't Wait
7. Forget About Me
8. Computer Love (Kraftwerk cover)

Blank Stares also did a station ID and a show I. The session was recorded by Ian Wilkinson and videotaped by Aldo Erdic.

Dragged in studio 3 session

Dragged in is a new band that plays melody with their hardcore in a way that harkens that early Dag Nasty sound found on "Can I Say". The band has two recordings which you can hear for themselves on bandcamp. Dave Fenton and Martin Poulin used to play in Deadmouth and continued to practise after the band broke up. They recruited Bruce from Endprogram to drum and Bruce recruited Patty from Brutal Youth and Ryan joined after mixing the first recording. That's the Reader's Digest version of how the band came together.

We have recorded with all of these folks so there was some familiarity with everyone and the way things worked.

We recorded the set twice and a few sings more times than that. The later recordings Patty started to lose his voice but we didn't figure that out until afterwards so here are the songs that the band was happy with recording.

1. Burning Inside
2. Absolute
3. Safe Together
4. Until It Kills
5. August
6. Dragged In
7. Sedative
8. Empty Glasses
9. Get Low
10. Stand Strong
11. Blackest Moments
12. Unsinkable
13. After the Flood

and then the band recorded some IDs for the station and the show. The session was recorded by Ian Wilkinson ad video taped by Aldo Erdic.

Sabotage studio 3 session

Sabotage first came not my radar through the promoter of the Curasbun Oi show. Curasbun are from Santiago, Chile and I think would be the first punk band from Chile to play Toronto. Sabotage are a band from Toronto featuring mostly kids of Colombian descent and they were opening up the show. They had a five song ep on their bandcamp page and so to help promote the show we featured the band in a demo feature. I was excited to learn of another band in Toronto that sang in Spanish. And as I met the band I learned that the singer, Irene, is from Colombia and has first hand knowledge of the punk scene there. I also learned that Andrew, the guitarist, and Alex, the drummer, are brothers who are from here but who's parents are Colombian and meeting Irene has got them wanting to get more in touch with their roots. I also learned that Andrew is a sound engineer and works with our sound Engineer, Ian, during the day. So they knew each other and the session flowed really well as a result. Cab is the bassist and has the most experience with being in bands. Together this band works really well together. Throughout the night we recorded the following songs:

1. Watching TV
2. It Doesn't Have To Be This Way
3. Que Mierdero
4. Bang Bang Bang
5. STI
6. Mujeras

We also made a few IDs

7. Bang Bang Bang CIUT ID
8. EXD ID
9. Mujeras CIUT ID

The session was video taped by Aldo Erdic of Punks and Rockers.

Gaucho studio 3 session

I have been trying to set up this Gaucho session for years now. This is the third or fourth time that we have had a session booked, so I wasn't sure that this session would ever happen. And when it did I felt like we had accomplished the impossible. The band has recently become a three piece. Jose is a studio 3 session vet. He was in as the singer of Eating Glass and as the drummer of S.H.I.T. and now as the drummer of Gaucho. The same can be said about Warren playing in various studio 3 locations with Molested Youth, Bored Stiff, and Urban Blight. Leo, the singer and bass player, has never been in. Growing up in Colombia Leo's influence are throughout the lyrics and the sound of this band. It becomes obvious in the interview. Gaucho has a demo and a new ep on Iron Lung Records titled "Desplazados". Here are the songs we recorded:

1. El Dia Final
2. Corrupción (Corruption)
3. Sistema de Mierda (System of Shit)
4. Cuerpas Mutilados (Mutilated Bodies)
5. Gritos de Guerra (Screams of War or Warcry)
6. Brutalidad Policia (Police Brutality)
7. Demonios
8. Cerebro Podrido
9. New song about Cannibalism

10. CIUT ID
11. EXD ID

The session was recorded by Ian Wilkinson and videotaped by Aldo Erdic.

FLQ studio 3 session

The FLQs started out as a Viletones cover band. FLQ comes from a reference in the song "Rebel". The band featured a different line up that included Ivan from School Jerks and Todd from Bad Skin.  As the line up changed so did the song writing and the FLQs became FLQ and started writing their own songs. The band currently features Luke on vocals, Erik (from Hassler) on guitar, Jeff on bass, and Brice on drums. FLQ has recorded a few times and you can find these recordings up at their bandcamp page including a couple of songs from this session. Ian Wilkinson recorded the following songs:

1. Perverse
2. Untitled
3. Bleed Out
4. Rat
5. Conditions
6. Turn It

The band also did some IDs for us:

CIUT ID
EXD ID

and we spoke after the session where Luke explained the songs and the band talked about shows and a tour they did last year.

Prom Nite studio 3 session

This session was recorded on Tuesday June 21st, 2016. Scott (Bassist) and Chloe (Drummer) had been into the station before with their respective bands (VCR, Wrong Generation, and Anti-Vibes). Anya (Vocalist) and Ivan (Guitarist) were at the station for the first time. Ian recorded and mixed the session which has also become a tour tape that Prom Nite are touring with. Prom Nite recorded the following songs:

1. Tied Down
2. No Motivation
3. It’s Boring
4. Weekend
5. Prize Pig
6. Missionary
7. Snakes
8. Friendly Boy
9. Condo
10. Entirety of Man
11. Rock Becomes Reality
12. CIUT ID
13. EXD ID

We were able to interview the band afterwards in which Anya explained the songs recorded. And Scratched Lens take lots of photos that we have posted up on facebook in a Prom Nite album.

Inactivist studio 3 session

Inactivist are a new band made up of some local boys and a couple from Galway. The couple from Galway are Anna and Evan who also play in another band called Dot. Inactivist was the hardcore band that both wanted to start. Anna is the singer. Evan is the guitarist. And Evan said that playing a studio 3 session was a dream come true which was very flattering to learn. Glad we could make a dream come true.

This session was the third time we recorded in the hallway and I wanted to try and work on sound isolation for the vocalist so we set Anna up in the interview studio.

The local boys are Leo who also plays bass and sings in Gaucho, and Ryan who drums in so many bands, but we used to play in a band together fifteen years ago called Countdown to Oblivion. It is odd that none of Ryan's bands have ever played at the station before. And I have tried to get Gaucho to come into the studio twice before and am currently trying right now to get them in..... I haven't given up on them. And it was great to have at least one member from Gaucho in the studio.

The song recorded were a mix of songs they have already recorded (which you can find on their Bandcamp page), some new ones and a Circle Jerks cover:

1. Pessimist / Feminist
2. Leave the Next Day
3. Ffffkill
4. Smokestacks
5. YYZ
6. In My Head
7. Operation (Circle Jerks)
8. CIUT ID
9. EXD ID
10. Interview

Ian Wilkinson recorded this session which we aired the best versions of songs on July 17th. You can find other takes of these songs and other crappier photos on the archive.org page.

Aldo videotaped this session for Punks 'n Rockers.

Motherfuckers studio 3 session

This is the second time Motherfuckers has appeared in a studio 3 session. The first was back in 2009 and the "I Wanna Be a Cop So I Can Fuck You Up" ep came out. We had just learned that over the many years of recording live loud bands in the broadcast studio, we had been doing damage to the wiring on the broadcast board. So this was the second time we recorded the session in the hallway outside of the broadcast studio. No sound isolation, everyone in one room and it turned out fine, which is partially because our sound engineer, Ian Wilkinson is a sound engineer and knows how to mic loud instruments so they don't bleed into each other. The band features Dan on vocals, Matt on guitar, Hunter on bass, and Tim on drums (who also moonlights in the Pagans of Northumberland). The Motherfuckers also had to play a set at the Bovine later this night so this wound up being one of the fastest sessions interview included. The songs we recorded were:

1. Punk Rock Group Therapy
2. Designated Drinker
3. We Need More Beer
4. Once a Pig Always a Pig
5. Postal
6. I Wanna Be a Cop So I Can Fuck You Up
7. Relentless
8. Cunter's Keggar
9. Rock 'n' Roll Scumbag
10. Lies (a.k.a. Wizards Fuck Off)
11. Ode #7
12. Ordinary People / Winner's Circle
13. Streets of Distraction (The freeze)
14. Rival Leaders (The Exploited)
14. Motherfuckers CIUT ID
15. Motherfuckers EXD ID

Motherfuckers studio 3 session, 2016

Motherfuckers are a hardcore band from Calgary. They have been through Toronto a few times. We recorded them once before in 2008 back at the old St. George basement studio. The band has been on and off a few times and are back together and have even written a full length last year called "Relentless". They were in town and playing a show later tonight at the Bovine, but they squeezed in this session before the show. Dan, Shawn, and Tim recorded that session. Tim also drums in a band called the Pagans of Northumberland. Dan's other band, Spastic Panthers, have called it quits. But the major change to the Motherfuckers is that their guitarist Jay has left the band and been replaced by Matt.

We recorded the following songs during this session:

1. Punk Rock Group Therapy
2. Designated Drinker
3. We Need More Beer
4. Once a Pig Always a Pig
5. Postal
6. I Wanna Be a Cop So I can Fuck You Up
7. Relentless
8. Cunter's Kegger
9. Rock 'n Roll Scumbag
10. Lies (a.k.a. Wizards Fuck Off)
11. Ode #7
12. Ordinary People
13. Winner's Circle
14. Streets of Distraction (The Freeze)
15. Rival Leaders (The Exploited)
16. EXD ID
17. CIUT ID
18. Interview

Ian Wilkinson recorded this session and is good friends with Motherfuckers. At the last minute we found out that this session had to be recorded in the hallway. Painted walls without any sound insulation making for refracting sound. This was not our best recording and Ian was upset with how it came out. We hope to improve the upcoming sessions.

This session was also captured on video by Punks and Rockers.

Katatonix Studio 3 session

When we did the SAGO session, Alex the singer said to me you should really have the Katatonnix in. I didn't know who the Katatonix were. Alex explained the Sofistifucks connection. Alex is the drummer in the Sofistifucks and Jakob who sings in Katatonix plays bass in the Sofistifucks. Paul plays guitar in both bands. So that is the connection. They all play in the Sofistifucks and the Sofistifucks are still together however they are taking a break while Downey is doing school. I think it might be graduate work. But this band also came together because Vince from Make No Gains wanted to be in a band with Paul and Jakob. Jakob and Vince are both from the east coast and there is something to that which helps create a chemistry in this band. Curtis is the drummer in School Damage and he wanted to play in another kind of punk band that is meaner and angrier. The seem to have accomplished that with Katatonix. In the interview the recurring theme about Katatonix songs are misanthropic in nature. We recorded the following songs in this session:

1. Race to the End
2. Pharma Lobotomy / Drowning
3. No Hope
4. Rust
5. Rip Off
6. Deep Stench
7. Discomfort / Disconnect

The band also did an ID for the show.

This session was recorded in Studio 3 by Ian Wilkinson. This is the last session recorded in the broadcast studio. Since this session an engineer has given the opinion that these live sessions have been effecting the wiring of the broadcast board and so we no longer are able to use this studio, which effects the sound.

This session was also video recorded by Aldo and Candy of Punks and Rockers.

SAGO Studio 3 session

SAGO are a new hardcore band started out of a need to start a fast hardcore band. The band features Alex from the Sofistifucks on vocals, which is odd because he plays drums in the Sofistifucks. In fact all these band members played drums in other bands so they are a band of drummers, but they also play pother instruments in other bands. Marty plays guitar in SAGO and Dragged In. Chad is the other guitarist who also has talents doing video editing for "The Scene id Dead...Long Live the Scene". Mike plays bass and Piers plays drums. The band has good chemistry. Their experience in other bands doesn't make them afraid to edit their material. There are a lot of crazy parts  that create layered structures all from a hardcore tradition which makes the music fierce and amazing. The session was a lot of fun and Ian Wilkinson was able to record the following songs which are on the "City Wide Garbage Strike" demo, a few new songs and a DS-13 cover.

1. Ignorant Shit
2. Capital Punishment
3. Throwaway
4. Squeeler
5. In Harm's Way
6. Accusations
7. Antipathy
8. Faceless Criminals
9. Fukk the Cops

DS-13 is one of the band's influences and they get to play with them on May 17th. How often does that happen?

This session was videotaped by Aldo and Punks 'n Rockers. Here is a clip from that session.

Big Brother studio 3 session

I have worked with Ian Wilkinson for a few years now. He records all of our studio 3 sessions. He is a trained sound engineer recruited out of Harris Institute by our Station Manager, Ken Stowar and was paired up with our show because of his punk background. Ian has played in a number of punk bands and more recently has played in the Corporation and Ghetto Blaster, but like I said I have mostly known him for being the guy that rushes around to set up mics get a sound, take a session away and send it to me equalized and ready to play. He has done this work selflessly. Ian has a new skacore band called Big Brother with Chris who played in Ghetto Blaster with Ian. Chris plays guitar and sings, Ian plays bass and sings. Derek is their drummer who was on the show once before because he played with Ian in the Corporation. Big Brother self-describes their sound as Orwellian Skacore. The band takes that SoCal melodic punk sound and combines it with ska and offbeat song structures making for a unique sound. The lyrics are inspired by a mix of personal incidents and inspiration documentary films. We did an interview with Big Brother afterwards. This is the first session not recorded by Ian in some time. Andrew Denure from the Filthy Radicals recorded this session. Thanks to Andrew. He recorded the following songs:

1. Slave Wages / I Want for Christmas is the End of the World
2. Some of us (Ruin it for the rest of us)
3. Labyrinth
4. Kids of the Sun
5. Island President
6. Cast Overboard
7. Slippin' Away
8. They're Watching
9. Eco-Terrorist
10. Corexit

We also did a station ID, a show ID and a combined ID. The session was video taped by Aldo and candy from Punks and Rockers.

Uncle Ray studio 3 session

Uncle Ray are a power violence band from Windsor. They used to run a punk house which did all the all ages shows a couple of years back. The band features Alexa on vocals, Steve on guitar, Sean on bass and Phil on drums. They have toured out east and have a couple of releases on their bandcamp page so they have done quite a few things in the past few years. We recorded the following songs at the session with Ian Wilkinson:

1. November
