Radio - Sunday, June 18th, 2017

Dragged In were at CIUT on Tuesday May 30th. The band is relatively new although they have been jamming since the break up of Dead Mouth. Marty and Dave got Bruce from End Program to jam who then brought in Patty from Brutal Youth and when they recorded they passed it on to Cox to mix. Cox digs the band and joins and the line up is set. Now that is the Reader's Digest version of how they got together but the band members talk different versions of their origin story, which is completely opposite to each other. After the air clears the band talks about their influences, their good fortune in playing with bag named bands, their songs, their recordings, punk in Newfoundland / Labrador, and ranch salad dressing among other things. You can check out the interview on the player above or download an MP3 file here.

Dragged in studio 3 session

Dragged in is a new band that plays melody with their hardcore in a way that harkens that early Dag Nasty sound found on "Can I Say". The band has two recordings which you can hear for themselves on bandcamp. Dave Fenton and Martin Poulin used to play in Deadmouth and continued to practise after the band broke up. They recruited Bruce from Endprogram to drum and Bruce recruited Patty from Brutal Youth and Ryan joined after mixing the first recording. That's the Reader's Digest version of how the band came together.

We have recorded with all of these folks so there was some familiarity with everyone and the way things worked.

We recorded the set twice and a few sings more times than that. The later recordings Patty started to lose his voice but we didn't figure that out until afterwards so here are the songs that the band was happy with recording.

1. Burning Inside
2. Absolute
3. Safe Together
4. Until It Kills
5. August
6. Dragged In
7. Sedative
8. Empty Glasses
9. Get Low
10. Stand Strong
11. Blackest Moments
12. Unsinkable
13. After the Flood

and then the band recorded some IDs for the station and the show. The session was recorded by Ian Wilkinson ad video taped by Aldo Erdic.

IDNS Studio 3 session

Matt joked about it being the coldest night of the year. It was pretty damn cold. Seems like a lot of Studio 3 sessions happen on bad weather days. To paraphrase DRI "I'd rather be recording". There was ice everywhere and trying to carry heavy amps over ice was a bit unnerving, but we did get all the equipnent upstairs. Sean, the singer was the only person I had not met before. Daren, the drummer, was in with Make No Gains not that long ago.  Matt had recorded with End Program at the St. George location and Preston did the same with Murdersquad T.O. So some of this was afamiliar and some of this was new. There was some nerves and there was some hearing issues, but as everyone thing was tweaking the session came together. 35 takes produced 11 songs. Ian Wilkinson did all tough work of sifting through all the takes. Here are the finals for you to hear or download:

1. Systematik
2. Without Warning
3. Destroyer of Worlds
4. Global Abuse
5. Eat. Shit. Die.
6. Consumption of Mass Quantities (C.M.Q.)
7. Mental Torpor
8. Unconscionable
9. Apotheosis of Carnage
10. Hierarchy of Power
11. Ad Nauseum

Please note that if you go to the archive.org page there are various formats for these songs.

I also asked Sean to do IDs for the station based on their songs so here they are:

12. CIUT ID
13. EXD ID

They stuck around to answer questions afterwards and you can hear the interview or check out the radio show where it is altogether.

Here is a video clip of the session filmed by Aldo from Punks `n Rockers:

To get in touch with IDNS you can reach them through their bandcamp site at http://idnscrust.bandcamp.com/. There is a contact section on the bottom right hand corner.

Radio - Sunday May 13th, 2012

This is the Mother's Day (May 13th) edition of EXD and in honour of Mother's Day we started off with the Lucky Ones and a song called "Your mother's a man". Just a little humour to start off the show before getting into a set of material inspired by the student protests in Quebec, which see the provincial government making it too expenisve for kids to go to university, which really sees them pulling out of the investment in our future. So the first set is about how bleak our future is. Rob gets into some recent Ugly Pop 5 re-issues with the Hot nasties and the Rock and Roll Bitches among others. D'Arcy features an all Canadian set with the Truncheons. And the show ends up with a demo feature by a new crust band from Montreal called Disrape. Listen to the show or read our playlist below.

End Program “Balatus” CD

This is the new END PROGRAM recording making it their third release. It rages like TRAGEDY and represents this city’s representation for the new wave of crust that bands like SAIGON DISTRESS SIGNAL and LIVING DARKNESS worked on developing. The songs are mostly structured around a fast punk beat that offsets d-beat with pensive doomy sounding parts. It’s crushing at the best of times and hits you hard. All I hear is a throwback to great bands of this genre like BEHIND ENEMY LINES and AUS ROTTEN. The songs on here are:

1. Not Enough
2. Confidence Man
3. Gold Medal Winners
4. Soldier
5. White Wolves

Various Artists “Law and Disorder” CD

This is a comp put together by the High Art for the Down Low folks. It is a benefit for the modern day “Books to Prisoners” movement. And this comp comes with a great leaflet that gives you the stats to help you realize that most convicts are prisoners of circumstance and that education could have made the difference in a lot of their lives. But with the conservative wave over the past few years those kinds of opportunities have been made out of reach for ordinary people and prisons are being built at alarming rates which makes a comp like this even more important these days. There are songs by well known bands like BESTHOVEN, WORLD BURNS TO DEATH and BEHIND ENEMY LINES and then there are songs by new bands like PARASYTIC, NAPATHY, and UNBROKEN BONES, who I would give best name on the comp to. There are bands from Canada like GERM ATTAK and MASS GRAVE and international bands like CONTRAVENE and SJU AVAR AR, and FUTURE RUINS who are contributing to these efforts here in Canada. This is a well put together set of songs. Lots of diversity all focused on making a difference. This is the stuff I love to see coming out of the punk scene. My only regret is not having some information about the bands or how to get in touch with them, but that is minor and the cause does remind front and center. EXD IN MRR - TORONTO SCENE REPORT (2009)

There hasn't been a Toronto scene report in sometime and I was reading the issue with Luke Haas and I got inspired to write one. That same issue MRR was doing a call out for scene reports so it seemed to work out. We did miss some news from bands like the New Enemy, but for the most part I think we caught everybody. If you want a more readable copy you should order one from Maximumrocknroll at http://maximumrocknroll.com/back-issues/. This was in issue #314, the July 2009 issue.

Various Artists “High Art for the Low Down” Dbl CD

What is “High Art for the Low Down”. It’s END PROGRAM’s space opened up to the local scene and touring bands as an all ages venue that does shows. The space is called Sieasta Nouveaux and reminds me of how Burnt Ramen operated out of San Francisco area. See the Ramen Days documentary for reference. Existed out of an old warehouse space in the lower eats end shows have been going on for the last three years and bands that have played have given up a track to make this compilation. There’s a lot of great stuff on here. There is a lot of variety. And it represents a huge part of Toronto’s historical underground over the last few years. The INFEST like nature of TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM, to the metal exploits of RAMMER, which is a show I got to see. And the liner notes accurately capture the filled to capacity, sweaty pit, frenetic explosion that takes place at the events. A.N.S. from Texas give up a track and there are dozens of locals that most folks outside of Toronto probably haven’t heard of. This is one of many T.O. centered comps coming out in the next little while and is probably one of the most accurate as it is a form of living document. (High Art for the Low Down / www.HA4TLD.com) – SP

End Program “The Machines are Only Human” CD

END PROGRAM are relatively new in Toronto although they have had quite an impact on our local scene. END PROGRAM have recorded a demo and this is their first official release. END PROGRAM have a big crossover sound that defined New York City after the straight edge renaissance in ‘86. You know H2O, BIOHAZARD, SICK OF IT ALL and that sort. The closest comparison I can find on their myspace site is SLUMLORDS. They have that crossover kind of sound. The lyrics are written in a punk rock stream of consciousness as if Matt were speaking in tongues but inspired by Kalv of DISCHARGE. (High Art for the Low Down / www.HA4TLD.com) – SP
