Cheetah Chrome tribute (Stephen)
Another giant in the punk scene fell this week, Cheetah Chrome, guitarist from the Dead Boys. I got to meet him once thanks to the efforts of Cleave Anderson. Cleave and Cheetah were friends. Cheetah used to stay at the Tyranna house when the Dead Boys were in town back in the day. The Dead Boys played Toronto so much that they were considered a local band. I was looking back at how many times they played Toronto in the early days

2 nights at the New Yorker on Friday June 17 and Saturday June 18th, 1977 opening up for the Ramones
2 nights at the Crash ‘n Burn on Friday August 5th and Saturday August 6th, 1977 with the Diodes
2 nights at the New Yorker on Friday October 14 and Saturday October 15th, 1977 with the Viletones and the Poles
Saturday August 5, 1978 at the Horseshoe with Arson and the Demics
2 nights at the Horseshoe between Saturday September 22 and Sunday September 23th, 1979 with the New Ugly line up and the Forgotten Rebels
3 nights at the Rock Palace (Lee’s) between Thursday October 25 and Saturday October 27th, 1979 with the Androids and Zro4

In 2008, the Screwed were recording with Cheetah in Toronto. They convinced Cheetah to come in to the radio station. We were on St George Street and we could just use that basement studio whenever we wanted so that worked with their schedule. I have a short set paying tribute to Cheetah Chrome starting off with his first band

Distorted Influence were a crossover band from Victoria in the late 80’s to early 90’s. They recorded lots but released little. They had a huge impact on the scene with the shows that they put on which included a legendary show with the ACCUSED. They have a post humous release that just came out called “Cold” and a reunion show on Wednesday ad we got to speak with Andy and Chris about all of this. But first we start off with a track from this new release.

On tonight’s show, we have a feature length interview with S.C.U.M. from Montreal who are important for a number of reasons. They were a very politically minded band taken on issues of policing, religion, war, and multi-national corporations. They were part of developing a Canadian version of crossover along with peers (Sudden Impact, Micro Edge and Fair Warning). Their singer is Black and one of the few prominent persons of colour within the early punk scene. He was also an amazing skater in his own right. I was able to speak with guitarist George Pearson (thanks to Erick Roy) about the significance of S.C.U.M. From being the band that fed the Montreal punk scene with members leaving to start Unruled and No Policy to brazenly speaking truth to power to a Montreal police force bent on criminalizing kids.

SCUM has always been one of my favourite bands all time bands. Never thought I would ever get to talk to them. Never say never. Thanks to Erick Roy we got to speak to George Pearson who plays guitar and reluctantly bass as we learn. As I mentioned at the top their album “Born Too Soon” has just been re-issued but that is not the only surprise they have in store. We are going to start off with “So MUCH Hate”, which originally appeared on the PEACE comp and was one of SCUM’s first unveilings to an international hardcore scene.
