Radio - Sunday, January 31st, 2021

Tonight we are celebrating 50 Years of CanCon and it’s influence on punk. On January 18th, 1971, Canadian Content became a part of the Broadcast Act and was implemented through minimum percentages of hourly Canadian airplay. You might have heard us use the term Can Con. It is a short form for Canadian Content. Like other countries in the world Canada became concerned about championing our own culture. In the 60s radio airplay was dominated by British and American acts. So on January 18th, 1971, Canadian Content requirements were added to the Broadcast Act. Radio stations were required to program somewhere between 25% which has now been increased to 40% of programming by Canadian artists. In Scandinavian countries their content requirements are higher to help preserve their culture with good success. And the same is true here. You can download this show here.

The photo was taken by Rod Orchard who used to do a zine named Full Contact, but Rod was taking photos of the Toronto hardcore scene back in the mid-80's. This photo was taken in Buffalo at a show supporting their "One Voice" tour. This photo appeared in the Godfathers of Hardcore film. Rod is letting us make puzzles out of this legendary photo as a fundraiser for CIUT. Go to : https://wepiecetogether.com/product/ciut-89-5-fm-agnostic-front/

Puzzle fundraiser - The Clash

The Clash are considered by many to be their gateway band into punk. With good reason as they were so versatile with their music writing. They were aware politically and always stuck up for the underdog. They made us give a shit and fight for something. And the White Brothers caught them at their first show in Toronto at the Rex Theatre. The White Brothers would go on to do many things with these historical document but the main thing they were doing was trying to establish a historical record for these important musical events that happened in their neighbourhood no less. Initially in the pages of their zine "Smash it Up" and with beautiful oversized prints at the Steamwhistle Brewery in an exhibition titled "Toronto Calling". Then to commemorate the Clash's 40th anniversary to Canada they put together a display of photos exhibited in the Pape/Danforth branch of the library called "The Clash on Danforth". Standing room only and even then it was difficult to get in earshot of the talk. And then there was the launch of Alone and Gone at the Rivoli where a talk with Nick Smash, Ivar Hamilton and Alan Cross discussed the Clash in Toronto. The White Brothers have allowed us to make a puzzle with this iconic shot as a fundraiser for CIUT which you can order at We Piece Together. Order at : https://wepiecetogether.com/product/ciut-89-5-fm-the-clash/

Our very own Rob Ferraz captured Joe Strummer at HMV on July 25th, 2001. That would be the last time Joe Strummer was in Toronto. THis is also available as a puzzle and can be ordered at : https://wepiecetogether.com/product/ciut-89-5-fm-joe-strummer/

Puzzle fundraiser - Dead Boys

This is an iconic photo that captures the Dead Boys at the Crash 'n Burn. The Dead Boys were one of the most important punk bands to make up the New York scene. Having them in Toronto helped legitimize our scene. We were becoming a place for touring bands to play. And the Crash 'n Burn was the first punk run club even if it wasn't officially a club. And Don Pyle, who was in high school at the time, was using camera equipment from his high school in order to capture these moments. In 2011, Don released a photo book called "Trouble in the Camera Club - A Photographic Narrative of Toronto's Punk History 1976 - 1980" which is when we got to see these photos. It's a fantastic book not just for the photos but also for the stories about the photos. We found another way to pay tribute to Don's artwork and recall some Toronto punk history. Through a puzzle fundraiser. Make punk puzzles at home during the lockdown. Order one at We Piece Together
