Radio : EXD 1233 - Sunday January 1st, 2023

This week's radio program starts off with a tribute to Terry Hall, lead singer from the Specials. We’ll take a look at some of the bands Terry was in before and after the Specials as well as some rare recordings of the Specials. That will be at the top of the show. The rest of the show will continue with our year in review look at 2022. Stephe reviews cassettes, Chris drills down into Canadian cassettes, Rob and Andre round out their year with their favourite releases. Download the show here.

A message to you .... Terry

The most iconic face for Britain’s ska revival - he had that dour look. Terry Hall was in a punk group called Squad. They formed in 1977 and recorded two singles. This is the A side to that first single “Red Alert”.

SQUAD - Red Alert (Squad)

Jerry Dammers talked him into joining the Coventry Automatics. He would replace singer Tim Strickland. The Coventry Automatics would become the Specials. The Coventry Automatics were a little slower and more on the reggae side so although there are a lot of songs on here that would become songs for the Specials, the Coventry Automatics were an early stage of the band's development. Here is an example of a song from the first LP.

THE COVENTRY AUTOMATICS - Concrete Jungle (Receiver)
THE SPECIALS - Long Shot Kick The Bucket - Liquidator - Skinhead Moonstomp (The Skinhead Symphony In Three Movements)

A medley of ska classics recorded at the BBC on October 22nd, 1979 referred to as the skinhead symphony in three movements. THE SPECIALS would go on to release three albums and a ton of top 10 singles. So many hits. And after “Ghost Town” Hall left the Specials with Lynval Golding and Neville Staple to form FUN BOY THREE. FUN BOY THREE were described as a deadpan and oddly experimental new wave group and they worked with an all girl group named Bananarama that would have greater success. With this project the band would hit No. 7 with its cover of “Our Lips Are Sealed,” a 1981 hit for the Go-Go’s that Mr. Hall wrote with that band’s Jane Wiedlin, whom he briefly dated. Here's a track from the first LP that features early Banarama

FUN BOY THREE - It Ain't What You Do (Chrysalis)
THE COLOURFIELD - Colourfield (Chrysalis)

THE COLOURFIELD were formed in 1984 and were based on Manchester. They had that jangly pop 60’s sound that the SMITHS were already popularizing. This is where I lost track of Terry Hall but he would go on to play in many bands and even re-join the Specials in 2008 performing with them right up until 2018. We’re going to go out with a song I got to see performed in a farmer’s field in Oakville thanks to the first Police Picnic and I had no idea what I was watching but I knew I loved it. Here's a clip from Much Music that the folks from UXB press posted.....Scroll through it to see the song "Enjoy Yourself".

Radio : EXD 1227 - Sunday, November 20th, 2022

Tonight we are raising funds for CIUT. You can go onto our site at ciut.fm and visit the donate page or there is a peer to peer fundraising page that we have set up where funds go directly to CIUT. Many things about this station are free. The volunteer time that hundreds of us put in every week. The programming is free. It’s not behind some paywall. The programming is diverse. It is done by learned experts - people who have dedicated the majority of their spare time following their scene. Very little advertising, so you don’t have to endure endless amounts of commercials to get to hear the thing you tuned in for. CIUT has figured out how to do a lot with so very little, but we do need to make up some operating costs and we could use your help. Find one of those funding portals and pitch in. It takes a community to keep a radio station broadcasting.

On tonight’s show you will hear lots of people talking about the merits of the show. I was touched but listeners and musicians who spoke about what the show means to them. There will be a lot of covers because covers of songs are fun and punk bands do a lot of them. I am also excited to share an interview with Don Pyle and Martin Sorrondeguy in the second half of the show about a double launch release party on November 26th that you should know about. Don has a new photo book coming out called Shot in the Mirror and it sounds like it is going to be amazing. And Martin has a new issue of Susto coming out.

So fundraising is on and we are doing are best to not torture with begging and pleading, but the station does need your help. Nobody’s really sure how live broadcasting might work at CIUT in this next phase of covid but we continue to work at bringing you a unique two hour of showcase of the week in punk. And we are not always so current affairs based but we do work to bring you things relevant to this scene in the form of playing bands or doing interviews or having features. And so that is where this next feature fits. On Saturday November 26th at the Annex Hotel a launch party is being thrown for the release of a new Don Pyle book called Shot in the Mirror. The book is being released with a number of features which we talk about in the interview. And Martin Sorrondeguy is co-releasing an issue of Susto which makes a collage piece of art out of some of Don’s photos which sounds pretty spectacular. And Martin will be playing music at the event. I had the chance to speak with these two prolific and important people in our scene. And here is that interview.

Radio - Sunday August 14th, 2022

On tonight’s show, we have some new material, some old material, and a demo feature for CRISIS PARTY, but up first a tribute to Gord Lewis to mark his passing. All the tributes I have read talk about what a nice and kind person Gord Lewis was. On January 28th, 2007, TEENAGE HEAD played our show and Greg Dick did this in depth interview with them. We are going to play clips from that interview and intersperse it with some Teenage Head classics. We’re going to start out with where the band got started. You can download the show here.

Crisis Party are a three piece band from Ottawa, consisting of Anthony (Precious Failures, The Flying Hellfish) on drums, Ska Jeff (Doxx, Dogma, Zooman) on bass with Matty (Cluttered, Century Egg, Future Girls) fronting the band on guitar and vocals. Their five track demo titled “Welcome to the Party” is Slated to release on Dirt Cult Records, September 2nd. The label lists influences such as Wipers, Wire and The Marked Men. After listening a couple of times, I hear some Lookout! Records influence as well. The songs are mid-fast paced, aggressive, with super catchy guitar hooks and vocals. Punk as fuck.
