FUGAZI - In Defense of Humans (Dischord)

We are producing the show on Wednesday night. Today was the most recent attack on homeless communities by the city. The Alexandra Park community was criminalized today. Trinity-Bellwoods three weeks ago. Moss Park two weeks ago. Lamport stadium yesterday. Alexandra Park today. Criminalizing a vulnerable population seems cruel.

We have a lot of interesting things on the show tonight including an early PERSONALITY CRISIS demo in our demo feature. But first we are going to start out with some tributes to recently departed members of the scene starting out with Jimmy Weatherstone who drummed for the DEMICS.

THE DEMICS - You Tell Me (Ready

Demo Feature
BSL were a band from Barrie back in 1986-1988. The three letter acronym was adaptable and the band had made a few stickers to suggest what the three letters could stand for. Boys from Scuttlebutt Lodge was the one that I have heard repeated back to me fairly often. They recorded a second demo in 1988 that really didn’t get much fan fare but three songs from their first demo made it to a compilation that I put out in 1988 called “Ontario: Yours to Discover”. We’re going to hear the eight song demo tonight.

Guh - Canada Day

On Canada Day, Guh did a performance in a park. More like a hydro field. Back of an industrial park. Craig found this great little location close to home (for me). Felt like it was my own little show. Got to catch up with old friends. This show was 30 years in the making, so to speak. Guh is in their 30th year as a band. And how would you describe their music. They are difficult to describe. Some opt to call them improvisational jazz. But that does not come close to what they sound like. There is a groove. One based in reggae and dub. It is trance like with Craig leading the bass and Colin's Tuba creates an extra lower bass-ish boost that drives this sound. Andrew and Blake are like a tag team of percussion and there is a lot of consideration for interplay. Julian and Jason run the gammit of reggae upstrokes and west coast airy jazz. Fiona adds a flair of symphony with violin. And Henry plays the bag pipes like a lead guitar. The overall sounds reminds me of a dub trance of exotica in a band comfortable with Jamming. Greg Ginn wanted to start a jam band (Gone). The show that was supposed to happen in my backyard. Plan B was a strip along a path and although I was being credited for setting up the gig was really a credit to Craig's organizing super power. I did a bunch of zoom call interviews about this songs in this set and mixed it in with the recording for this session. You can download this here.
