A big snowstorm hit Toronto this weekend and after much snow shovelling this NoMeansNo song "'Til I Die" soke to me with the opening lyric "I'm gonna Shovel snow til I die".

We started off the show with a dedication to Greg Dick for the loss of his father, Martin, who passed away last week. He was from Hamilton and "Picture my face" was a song that Martin knew. We had to keep it Hamilton. The rest of the set was by bands from Belfast because Greg let us know about this film on Belfast called "Good Vibrations". This Friday "Good Vibrations" will be showing the film for a week at the TIFF Lightbox. You should try and see it.

After that I played a set based on my top 10 picks for October and a set of runners up.

There was a set of new material mostly of the grind / power violence nature.

Then a set of galloping hardcore inspired by Discharge, Japacore, and kang.

Tonight on the radio show

Ancient Heads Studio 3 session

 

I first heard about Ancient Heads when Demolition were in to record a session. Singer, Nathan Simpson, came in for the session and did some covers with

Demolition. Afterwards he told me about this well kept secret that took their name from a Beyond song. I was stunned that someone knew who Beyond was. At the time the band featured Matt La Forge on guitar and Jason O'Young on drums. I knew Jason from sessions with the Kill Decibel and Urban Blight, but his reputation proceeds him and he is a great guy to boot. Jason had already recorded a demo tape for the band called "Demo 2012, Volume 1" which is a three song recording of some old school sounding straight edge. Since then Emmett Morris from Demolition was recruited to play bass. After much tooing and froing with schedules and a prevously cancelled session this recording finally came together. The band was practised and Nate had even worked out introductions for each song. That was a first. Jon Hawkes recorded the session and the songs recorded include:

This is the semi-annual fundraising drive show. This season's theme is "the Evolution continues", which is a take off on the last theme "The Evolution of Sound". So we started off tonight's show with Devo who represent devolution. And isn't that what punk is a deconstruction of mainstream rock. You can hear tonight's show here.

Jon Sharron, guitar for Hassler and the Valley Boys, talked about his experiences with EXD and the Studio 3 sessions. He made the case that we have something unique with this broadcast and he brought in a special limited edition Hassler package to get people donating to CIUT.
