Cheetah Chrome tribute (Stephen)
Another giant in the punk scene fell this week, Cheetah Chrome, guitarist from the Dead Boys. I got to meet him once thanks to the efforts of Cleave Anderson. Cleave and Cheetah were friends. Cheetah used to stay at the Tyranna house when the Dead Boys were in town back in the day. The Dead Boys played Toronto so much that they were considered a local band. I was looking back at how many times they played Toronto in the early days

2 nights at the New Yorker on Friday June 17 and Saturday June 18th, 1977 opening up for the Ramones
2 nights at the Crash ‘n Burn on Friday August 5th and Saturday August 6th, 1977 with the Diodes
2 nights at the New Yorker on Friday October 14 and Saturday October 15th, 1977 with the Viletones and the Poles
Saturday August 5, 1978 at the Horseshoe with Arson and the Demics
2 nights at the Horseshoe between Saturday September 22 and Sunday September 23th, 1979 with the New Ugly line up and the Forgotten Rebels
3 nights at the Rock Palace (Lee’s) between Thursday October 25 and Saturday October 27th, 1979 with the Androids and Zro4

In 2008, the Screwed were recording with Cheetah in Toronto. They convinced Cheetah to come in to the radio station. We were on St George Street and we could just use that basement studio whenever we wanted so that worked with their schedule. I have a short set paying tribute to Cheetah Chrome starting off with his first band

The Varukers (Nick)

I had a chance to speak with Nicholas Jackson-Wynch who is the guitarist in the Varukers. He used to play in the English Dogs and joined the Varukers two years ago. The Varukers are playing at Vertagogo tomorrow night and the Hard Luck on Wednesday. We start offwith a song from the Damned and Defiant LP. Here is “Allegiance to None”.

I was watching the Devo documentary on Netflix and I was taking in everything they were saying about this subversion of American ideals using pop culture references and the song Come Back Jonee came on and I heard this set. A review of punk and it’s critique of Johnny culture starting off with the Devo song….
