Radio - Sunday September 2nd, 2012

For our Labour Day show we featured an interview with Chris Walter about his new book "SNFU: What No One Else Wanted to Say". Chris has just released the book on GFY Press and was in town two weeks ago to talk about it. In the little time that we had we spoke about the book, about the band from Edmonton, and about his other band biographies. I wish I had more time to go in detail about some of the band's more known songs, but we did what we could, but getting at some of the highlights. There are a lot more to read about in his book.

We also got to feature the demo of Pure Scum who are from North Carolina. In the recent issue of MRR the band is described as "Boston not L.A." era Jerry's Kids meets SOA meets "United Blood". All that and they start out with a song railing against school just two days before school starts. Who can't relate to that? You can get the demo through Sorry State.

Down Syndrome "The New Dark Age" ep

Down Syndrome were a hardcore band from Edmonton that existed between 1983 and 1987. The band featured started out with Sjor (drums & vocals) and Bob (bass, vocals) . After a few short lived guitarists came and went, Laurie and Dave came into it, around May '83. That line-up released the "Dark Age" cassette. Then Dave went and Jan came in for guitar and vocals, around May '84 and they recorded this EP was released. Polluted Brain re-prints an interview with the band. They also appeared on the "It Came from Inner Space" comp. Jeff Bale reviewed the ep for MRR saying "Whoaa! A mighty impressive debut EP by this Edmonton punk outfit. The mid- to fast-tempo material here far surpasses their earlier cuts on the Innerspace compilation. With its skads of guitar power, strong tunes, tasteful lead parts, and intelligent lyrics, I can't think of any reason not to scarf this fucker up." (from Maximum Rocknroll #20, December 1984). The songs on the ep are:

1. Other Ways
2. Solitary Confinement
3. Racism
4. Pain and Hunger
5. Values
6. Suicidal Eyes

They also had an interview in the December 1985 issue of MRR.

Release - V/A "It Came from Innerspace" LP

In Chris Walter's book "SNFU...What No One else Wanted to Say" we learn that the guy behind this compilation was a music loving truck driver named Barry Peters. He approached SNFU about being on the compilation in May 1983 and then recorded them in a makeshift studio that he put together in a warehouse that skaters used as a hangout in Edmonton. He recorded "Strip Search", "Grunt, Groan, Rant and Rave", and "Real Men Don't Watch Quincy". this would be SNFU's first recording. The band blew out the tweeters but they later replaced them.

The compilation featured most of Edmonton's top underground bands which included the Down Syndrome, Malibu Kens and Moe Berg's current band at the time Facecrime. Barry's label was called Rubber Records and he would move to Montreal and start up Cargo Records. Cargo Records would go on to release SNFU's "Better than a Stick in the Eye" and "The Last of the Big Time Suspenders". The songs that make up this compilation are :
1. The Touch - Nerve Gas Attack
2. The Thieves - What's Old is What's New
3. Route 66 - Where is She During the Week?
4. Facecrime - I Know Some People
5. Down Syndrome - You're a punk
6. Malibu Kens - Party's Over
7. SNFU - (Real Men Don't Watch) Quincy
8. The Standards - Break Out
9. Malibu Kens - 421-1111
10. The Thieves - Screams
11. SNFU - Grunt, Groan, Rant and Rave
12. Facecrime - Did I Hear You Right?
13. The Touch - Family Tree
14. Down Syndrome - Bums
15. Route 66 - Had Enough of This
