Radio : EXD 1231 - Sunday, December 18th, 2022

One tonight’s show we have Chris’s Year in Review albums picks so a sneak peak into full lengths for the year that was 2022. Andre has a set of music new to him but not really new. Rob has a mixed bag of new and old releases. I put together a nostalgic set of songs about Thatcher inspired by nephew who you will hear from. Download the show here

But up first a tribute to Jet Black which gets to why we opened with “Down in the Sewer”. Jet Black (R.I.P.) - Died Dec. 6th, 2022. Jet Black (real name - Brian Jones Duffy) died on December 6th, 2022. Jet was the drummer and founding member of the Guilford Stranglers. Jet was a successful business man owning a fleet of ice cream vans, The Jackpot which was an off license that would serve as the Stranglers home base, and one of the first home brewing facilities. Jet was a drummer in the late 50s / early 60’s and returned to drumming in 1974 starting up the Stranglers. Although Jet’s drumming was described as basic with some jazz influences the songs Down in the Sewer and Duchess exhibit more frantic drumming.

Maggie Maggie Maggie
Margaret Thatcher served as the prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. Nicknamed the Iron Lady, Thatcher was known for her steadfast conservative politics. Thatcher's term coincided with a boom in English music in the wake of the punk movement, and much of this music harshly criticized her policies or straight up attacked her on a personal level. Bands tapped into the atmosphere of anger and discontent in Thatcher's England, singing about everything from high unemployment rates to the Falklands War. I was talking about this with my brother in law and his son on the weekend and he had some chants that became earworms that became something I had to revisit in the show this week. Here is part of a conversation with my nephew - Dylan as we talk about slogans.
