The B-GIRLs are a super important part of Toronto’s punk history. They were the first all girl band from Toronto, they remained independent keeping their own values with some rules that countered the sexist practices within the music scene at the time, and they wrote some of the best hits that came out of this scene. They were one of the first bands to leave Toronto and make it in New York. They toured with the CLASH. They got released on a label outside of Toronto (Bomp). At the end of 2017, the B-GIRLS released their old material on an LP called “Bad Not Evil” and they played a show in Toronto. We got to speak with Lucasta Ross and Cynthia Ross (not related although that is debatable) when the B-Girls played last year. This is part 1 of the interview we did back in December. There is a great interview in the March 2018 issue of MRR about ISS, who are from North Carolina. Daniel from Sorry State is releasing an ep by them and took the time to get into their heads about their cut and paste approach of making music with a sampler. Using hip hop approaches to song making the band has applied this to punk and as a result you get song titles that sound like in-jokes. It’s a new application of song writing methodology and a cassette has been released called “Endless Pussyfooting” so we featured this on tonight’s show. Tonight is our fundraising show and we always play name that tune with our hosts on the Prophesy. This year James St. Bass (Creative Zero / Sudden Impact fame) was on deck and he guessed that the opening song was an Elvis Costello tune a song about radio.

Interviews and band profiles
Last week we aired an interview with ALIENATION who are a hardcore band from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. We interviewed them when they were here for Not Dead Yet. Interviews and band profiles are something we do quite often on the show. In the last few months we aired interviews with the legendary Oi Polloi from Scotland, Zoom and the Scenics who are considered by some to be the first punk bands from Toronto, DS-13 from Umea Sweden, Fuck You Pay Me from Cleveland, and Geoff Pevere who wrote Gods of the Hammer. And when INACTIVIST came in Evan talked about doing an interview on Equalizing-X-Distort was like one of these bucket list items. Matt Black from Die Brucke said the same thing. I have heard this a couple of times from bands so we know this is valued by bands. In fact I don’t hear other punk radio shows do this. Band interviews are something unique to EXD abd CIUT and as a result we profile a lot of local and Canadian bands to get their story out.

In these interviews we often get into other things that members of bands are up to. These people are champions of the scene because they put in their time trying to build up the scene in various ways and it is not uncommon. Last week when we were talking to Dave Brown, Alienation’s newest member, he was telling us about Sewercide Records and his latest offshoot label Unknown Coast, which is responsible for the release of the Slow Death demo. Slow Death were a hardcore band from Summerside, PEI – who represented a lot of firsts. Dave used to be a host on the show and he knows how important the drive is to keeping our doors open, so he offered us a Sewercide package which includes a Word on the Street ep, Abject Pax ep, Dyscontrol ep, and the Slow Death ep.

Studio 3 session
GAUCHO and SABOTAGE were both in to record Studio 3 sessions recently. But over the last six months we aired sessions with :

- SAGO on April 24th and then you recommended we do a session with
- KATATONIX which aired on May 29th
- MOTHERFUCKERS from Calgary which we aired on June 26th
- INACTIVIST on July 17th, which was recorded just before the Irish members left the city. Leo what is happening with Inactivist?

- FLQ on September 4th, and
- GAUCHO on October 16th

We have the members of some of these bands in tonight. So first off I want to re-introduce Leo who was in twice, first with Inactivist and when you were hear I was telling you how much trouble I was having getting Gaucho in and you made that happen because you sing and play bass in that band as well. And Andrew and Alex, who are brothers playing in Sabotage. They talked about their experiences recording at the station and what that means for their bands.

Studio 3 sessions continued
Alex from SAGO joins in on the conversation and we talk about the development of those personalized station IDs. We also talk about the band photos. And then we talk about community access to the station using Alex as an example of being someone who has suggested these programming pieces that we acted on which include:

- At the SOFISTIFUCKS session he told us about SAGO so we had you come in.
- He helped set up the UNCLE RAY recording who are a band from Windsor
- At the SAGO session he told us about KATATONIX and we arranged to have them in.
- At the KATATONIX session he told us about DS-13 and even arranged for us to get in so we can get an interview.
- I also want to thank you for turning me onto Democracy Now. You mentioned it on the last drive that you were in and I started listening where I heard about the altercation at Standing Rock

Anyway I wonder how common this is to be able to suggest programming and watch it come together. We talk about CIUT being a community station but all these points above demonstrate to me the two way involvement that the station has with our listeners.

Zoom were super important for the Toronto punk scene. Self-Releasing one of the first punk singles in Toronto called “Sweet Desperation” and opening the doors for punk bands to play the Colonial Underground which is where the first wave of punk bands cut their teeth, Zoom paved the way. Forty years later an LP of unreleased material has just been released by Ugly Pop and Chris Haight and John Hamilton have reformed the band to play a record release show. 13 months ago Dini Lazslo was in to explore the origins of punk in Hungary. After having to cut a number of bands from the playlist Dini expressed the wealth of punk bands that made up the contemporary scene and we left the door open to do a follow up show on Hungary. Katatonix are an awesome new hardcore band from Toronto featuring members in other local hardcore bands who are keeping busy with this mean sounding hardcore band with misanthropic lyrics. The band talks about how the chemistry in this band helps them write songs easily. It makes sense if a band has members who play in other bands then there are certain shorthands that come from those experiences. Jakob and Paul also play in the Sofistifucks, Vince plays in Make No Gain, and Curtis plays in School Damage. Freddy Pompeii is one of the nicest folks I have met in the punk rock scene. Cleave first told me he was coming to town when he first went to Philly to talk about a Secrets reunion show. This must have been a year or so ago. So we had been planning to talk to him for a while now. We arranged for a studio 3 session that he wound up being too sick to make. I had given up trying to get this interview. My life was a little crazy at the time, but thanks to the encouragement of Greg Dick and Mickey Skin nursing him to health and getting him to the radio station, it happened. This interview took place on November 26th, 2015, but because we had just aired a studio 3 session with the other guys in the Secrets we saved this for Oscar Night. Freddy tells us about how “Screaming Fist” was written and this was the first time I had ever heard this story. Freddy sets some historical inaccuracies about the Viletones in this interview. He tells us stories about New Rose like the time Mick Jagger bought a ton of things in the store to give out at a benefit show that the band was sentenced to perform. And we get into the Secrets which was different territory not discussed in the interview with John, Bryant, and Cleave back in November. You can download that interview here.

The Secrets studio 3 session

It's rare you get to meet people that inspire you. Usually you hear a radio interview with someone or see an interview on TV or the internet, but it is rare that you get to be part of that conversation. I have been into punk for a long time and as I have gained an appreciation for the homegrown local scene I have come to recognize that the Viletones and the Diodes were some of the pioneers of that scene. That is a given, especially after reading Treat Me Like Dirt or Perfect Youth or Trouble in the Camera Club. But the first band that grew out of that scene and became part of a second wave that is described as part of the second wave is a band named the Secrets. The band got their name because they technically had formed while the Viletones were still a band. They were practising in secret. And they initially started out as a jam band. In fact when they first started playing they were known as the Secrets Review. And they shared the stage with all the folks who were singers in that first wave. They performed as a stage band and had many of the greats like Mickey Skin and Lucas and Zero come up and sing....while they worked on original material. And the material was not what you would expect from guys who wrote the Viletones and Diodes material. The key difference was that it had a back beat. This had something to do with the musicians backgrounds. Freddy had been a do wop singer back in Philly. That influenced a song like "Zoom". 

John and Chris performed in R and B bands prior to their band Zoom, which Don Pyle has argued is the first punk band in Toronto to release a record. There are songs on the Secrets LP that are bar blues numbers and more new wave inspired. But the music reflected the time when bands like the Clash started toying with reggae and rockabilly. The Secrets were out of the gate early and they shared the spotlight bring the scene together at a time when it was falling apart. Gary Topp put together a reunion show for the Secrets getting Freddy Pompeii to come back for the first time in decades. Cleave told us about this reunion a year earlier and we began planning to record a session. Freddy's trip to Toronto led to him getting strep throat and so he wound up missing the session. he was hopped up on antibiotics trying to get better for the show they had in Hamilton later that week. So Chris, John, Bryant and Cleave came in to record a session but recorded the only two songs that Freddy didn't sing on. "Schoolgirl Hitchhiker" and "I'll Cry Tomorrow", which appeared on the "No Pedestrians" compilation. We also got to speak to these guys in three parts. Radio - Sunday, December 2nd, 2012

Sid's Kids are a new punk band from Toronto made up from Cleave Anderson of the Screwed, and Marcel LaFleur and John Sutton of Arson. They have been playing this punk / new wave night at the Painted Lady and galvanizing members of the early Toronto punk scene in the process through their fun theme nights. We got a chance to speak and record the group with some of their collaborators. This group included Zero from Zro4, Mickey Skin from the Curse, Fergus Hambledon of the Basics and a Passing Fancy, Barrie Farrel of the Existers, and Chris Haight of Zoom and the Viletones.

We also played No Mistake in our demo feature. No Mistake are a new hardcore band from San Jose featuroing Mikey Bullshit of Go! on guitar and some other members of In Disgust and Permanent Ruin.
