Anarchist Corner
THE EX were a band from Amsterdam that started out in 1979. The band started out in the squat movement and were inspired by bands like the Fall and the Mekons. The band was known as an anarcho-punk band but they were also associated with the post punk scene. Rumour is that the band spent the first six months on graffiti advertising. The first release is this song on the Utreg Punx compilation.

THE EX - Stupid Americans (Rock Against)
THE EX - Cells (He / Superior Viaduct)

In June 1980, The Ex released their first EP, All Corpses Smell the Same. The most striking features of the music are the strongly rhythmic guitar attacks and the dogged way in which Sok spit the words into the microphone. The lyrics deal with politics, squatting, and social injustice. The band's first full-length album, Disturbing Domestic Peace, was released later the same year.

THE EX - Outlook-Army (Verrecords / Eh)

Shortly after these recording were released, Geurt left the band and was replaced by Willem from the Rondos. René left the band and was replaced by Bas on the bass. In 1982, The Ex released their second album, History is What's Happening; this album is seen as a musical evolution. Many of the songs were created during live performances. Two tracks from The Ex were included on the compilation album Oorwormer. In 1982, Willem left the band and was replaced by Sabien on the drums.

THE EX - Dutch Disease (More Dirt Per Minute)

In April 1983, the Ex released their third album, Tumult, produced by Jon Langford of the Mekons. A few months later, their 12 inch Gonna Rob The Spermbank was also released; this record contained four songs that were also recorded during the recording session of Tumult. In 1983, The Ex also released the album Dignity Of Labor, which appeared as a box containing four 7" singles and a book. The singles each contained eight untitled tracks that deal with the demise of the Wormer-based Van Gelder paper factory. Bas left the band and was replaced by the new bassists Luc and Joke. In the fall of 1983, The Ex did their first tour of England. A product of this tour is the split 12" The Red Dance Package that The Ex released in collaboration with the band Alerta.

THE EX - The Well-Known Soldier (F.A.I. / Fist Puppet)
THE EX - Kidnap Connection

This is off the double album “Blueprints For A Blackout” released in March 1984. This album included more improvisation, and new musical instruments were used, including violin, oboe, marimba, and oil barrels. During this period, The Ex consisted of five band members who adopted "Ex" as their last name. In 1986, The Ex recorded the double single 1936: The Spanish Revolution. The double single contained Spanish folk songs, and a 144 page booklet on the Spanish Revolution. I remember the band talking about how they were exhausted by all the research put into this project.

THE EX - They Shall Not Pass (Ron Johnson / The Ex)

In 1987, the EX teamed up with the English punk band Chumbawamba under the name Antidote to record the single Destroy Fascism! which is released on Loony Tunes Records.

ANTIDOTE - Education (Part 2) (Looney Tunes)

In October 1989, the Ex launched their first American tour with the Canadian band NoMeansNo. That’s when I would see them at a show at the Rivoli. In November, the Ex release their next album which is a double album Joggers & Smoggers. This album is more experimental and jazzy, and features many guest musicians, including members of Sonic Youth and Ab Baars.

THE EX - Nosey Parker

In 1991, the Ex started their singles project. They offered a subscription where subscribers paid 36 guilders to receive a new single every two months for a year. Each single contained four songs recorded during a performance at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, where The Ex was supported by guest musicians Ab Baars, Han Bennink, and Wolter Wierbos. The Ex also start their collaborations with Tom Cora who is a celloist. Adds a different dimension to what they are doing. Here’s a song off their second record together which comes out in 1993 (And the weathermen shrugs their shoulders). The first one comes out in 1991.

THE EX - Conviction Going Gaga

The following year the EX start doing dance performances and the year after they start experimenting with blues. The band would continue to be very active until 2011 doing many interesting things, but that is for wikipedia to tell you and not a punk show.

English Dogs Rarities (Chris)
This next segment is for fans of English Dogs. A friend of mine named Daniel recently obtained a copy of an unreleased demo by English Dogs. He was nice enough to forward it to me. Many thanks to Daniel for this kind gesture. The interesting thing about the demo is that it was recorded during a massive sound and lineup change. English Dogs went from a UK82 style band to a crossover powerhouse in (what seems like) under a year. When writing for their new sound the dogs asked long time friend of rhythm guitarist Jon Murray, Trace Abbott to assist. Trace is the guitarist and founding member of the NWOBHM band Overdrive and also played with Witchfynde. Jon had played bass with overdrive prior to starting English Dogs. So, this demo is three songs. Two of which most English Dogs fans should be familiar with and one unreleased track. Let’s have a listen to some of the demo. This is the demo version, recorded August 22nd 1984, of Ambassador of Fear.

ENGLISH DOGS - Ambassador of Fear (Unreleased demo)
ENGLISH DOGS - Incisor (Unreleased demo)

Those were demo versions of Ambassador of Fear and Incisor by English Dogs. The lineup that recorded these versions consisted of 3 members of the classic line up. Jon, Wattie and Pinch. With Trace on lead guitar and friend of the band Troy on Vocals. I was lucky enough to speak with Trace regarding this demo and he helped me fill in a few blanks. I should mention that this is not uncharted territory. Negative Insight did a brief but informative write up about this rarity. Check the live Facebook commentary or the equalizingXdistort blog for links. One thing that struck me besides the difference in lead guitar players was that the demo featured a vocalist that wasn’t part of either lineup of the band; UK82 or crossover. As Trace explained, he was a friend. However, this demo was used to recruit a new vocalist; Ade Bailey formerly of Ultra Violent. Wakey having departed the band, because of the new music style. Due to Trace’s involvement in Pendragon coupled with the loss of a loved one, he was not able to fill the role of permanent lead guitarist. But life long friend of Trace and former member of the (most excellent) Destructors, Gizz Butt was recruited. Coming up next are the album versions (with Gizz playing lead and Ade on vocals) of the same two songs we just heard!! Once again, this is Ambassador of Fear.

ENGLISH DOGS - Ambassador of Fear (Rot Records)
ENGLISH DOGS - Incisor (Rot Records)

That was Ambassador of Fear and Incisor by English Dogs. This is the unreleased demo material from English Dogs. As well as album versions of the tracks; such as the last two songs we played. Kind of seeing how their sound evolved. Kind of nerding out. I spoke briefly with Trace Abbott of Overdrive (who played lead guitar on the demos) to help me fill in a few blanks. Trace paid to have the demos restored from 1/4” tape this year by Bart Gabriel. The tape itself was damp and covered in mold, but Bart was able to restore it and transfer it to a digital format. I asked Trace if he had done any other collaborations with members of English Dogs and the answer I got was yes; with a but. I mentioned that Jon was the bassist of early Overdrive. What I came to learn was Pinch teamed up with Trace for about a year in the band Metalstorm. However, the only recording was a live board recording that was stolen in 1989. Something that would definitely be nice to check out, unfortunately. In any case both the Dogs and Trace are still at it pursuing their own projects. Overdrive have a new LP ready and are currently looking for a well suited label. I can maybe drop that the album is called Resurrection and features riffs from the lost Metalstorm board mix. Hence resurrection. He’s also playing live with Witchfynde-X. We’re going to close out the set with an unreleased and mostly unknown English Dogs demo. Many thanks to Daniel, Trace, Gizz and Negative Insight for their contributions to this feature. As a lifelong fan this kind of material blows my mind.

08 CYMEON X - Wygrać Swoje Życie (Refuse) – originally released as a cassette back in 1992. Polish straight edge hardcore / band founded in October 1991 in Poznań. Active to 15th June 1994 when they played their farewell show in Poznań. Some of the members on the ashes of Cymeon X formed Respect. The band is back together, playing live and writing material.
07 ERVIN BERLIN – Junior’s Got Brain Damage (Total Punk archives) – Pressed in an ultra limited number of 200 back in 1980. Ervin Berlin was the work of Ervin Shuemake (a late 20's acid rocker) and two young punks named Jeff and Tom The Bomb. Ervin had cut his teeth playing guitar on the crazy TERRY BROOKS "STRANGE"- Translucent World LP back in 1973 and spent the remainder of the 70s in various acid, hard, and prog rock bands throughout Central Florida. He met the younger punk duo of Jeff and "The Bomb" at end of 79/ beginning of 80 and decided to take a stab at the punk craze with his two new acquaintances. Soon the trio was at a country and western studio in Winter Haven recording the Ervin Berlin single between sessions for possible Bellamy Brothers tracks. The blending of Ervin's acid rock chops and Jeff and Tom's thuggish punk approach resulted in this KBD space punk stomper. Equal parts Blue Cheer, Debris, Sacramento's Ozzie, and late 70's Hawkind. The 7" was pressed, a few house parties were played, and all parties went separate ways. 42 years later we are kicking off TOTAL PUNK ARCHIVES with a reissue of this lost Orlando classic.
06 L'ODI SOCIAL - Los cara de culo (B-Core) Que pagui Pujol Special 35th Anniversary Edition of one of the most important recordings in the history of Spain’s punk. L'Odi Social were pioneers and greatest exponents of the golden age of 80s Barcelona's hardcore-punk scene, along with bands like Subterranean Kids, Anti/Dogmatikss or GRB.
05 RIOT . 303 - Riot .303 (Supreme Echo) – “1981-1983” LP – band was from Calgary. They had a 7” come out in 1982 called “Crowd Control”. Tim Yohannon likened them to the SUBHUMANS which is true. The band featured ex-Sturgeons rhythm section and future Beyond Possession vocalist.
04 A.K.O.B. - Officer Friendly Blues - a band from Vancouver formed out of the break up of House of Commons. They recorded and released a record within their first month of jamming.
03 RUDIMENTARY PENI - B-Ward - ep (Sealed) – released three of Rudi P’s back catalogue. We are going to feature something from the ep. We did an anarchist corner feature on them.
02 THE NOSTRILS – Kropotkin Said (Supreme Echo) - Undaunted ep emerged as the dawning light of Winnipeg’s second wave of punk rock. Their punk house – the house of Beep – was the centre for comings and goings in the punk scene.
01 DOMINANT PATRI - Experiment “Heroes Glory” (Sealed) - Originally released in 1983. Described to me by Chris as one of the most sought after recordings before this release. DOMINANT PATRI from Luton released just one demo and played less than 15 gigs in their short existence. Formed in 1982, the band were part of an active and political punk scene in Luton based around KARMA SUTRA. They recorded and released a three track demo in June 1983 which remains one of the best kept secrets of the peace punk era. It has the tunes, production and lyrics of any classic and it deserved so much more attention.
