From the LP XXV. This marks Hellshock’s 25th year as a powerhouse of USA crust.

CONTRAST ATTITUDE - Existence (WHY) (D-Takt ja Rapunk)

From the LP Discharge Your Noise. Contrast Attitude still one of the best dbeat bands going. Lots of Discharge worship and crustcore riffs on this one as well. Contrast Attitude playing outta Mie, Japan.

LANGUID - Doomed (D-Takt & Råpunk / Desolate) 

From their LP Shove Their System Up Their Ass. One of the most punishing and beloved dbeat bands going at the moment. Languid playing outta Edmonton.

G.A.Z.E. - Fly Like A Fly (D-Takt & Råpunk) 
From their self-titled 12”. Nutty, fast hardcore the way we all like it; playing outta Helsinki. Pretty competent guitar playing on this release as well. Take note!

NIGHTFEEDER - Life’s Foul Pit (Phobia / Children of the Grave)

From the Nightfeeder / Verdict split: Död Åt Tyranner. More crustcore / dbeat earslaughter. With members of Consumer, Deathraid and Disrupt. Nightfeeder playing outta Seattle. 

VERDICT - Syntax Error (Phobia / Children of the Grave) 

Another powerhouse lineup with members from 3-Way Cum, Varoitus, Dischange, and No Security amongst many, many other bands. Pure Kang punk insanity.

AYUCABA - Cocaina (Metadona) 

That’s off the debut LP from Ayucaba Operación Masacre. I was a big fan of Inyeccion when Cromi was doing vocals for that project. Now teamed up with Juan David of Muro and Secta Suicida, Ayucaba play some killer punk with shades of Japanese hardcore, dark punk and mid 80s UK crossover like English Dogs or Broken Bones.

PISSSNIFFERS - Φρίκη (Horror), (Χάος Αντικομφορμισμός) 

Once again, a debut LP. This is off of the Pisssniffers self-titled. Top notch raw punk outta Greece, with the band name being an obvious nod to Skitslickers. If you like it raw, fast, and fuzzed out, this is for you. Pisssniffers made up of members from Kolonaki SS and Discordance.

PSYCH-WAR - Screams at the Sky (Agipunk / Archaic)

From their (you guessed it) debut LP Psychotic Warmonger.  Kind of stenchy, crusty, shades once again of Broken Bones and English Dogs. If you like mid to late 80s English Crust, this is up your alley. Psych-War playing outta Philly.

DUST COLLECTOR - Unholy Knife (General Speech) 

This is the rawest most fuzzed out album on this top ten list. Taking influence from bands like Disorder, Confuse and Swankys. Churning simple beats. Hard to believe this is also their debut LP. Self titled. Dust Collector playing outta LA.

SEX DWARF - Slicka (Children of the Grave / Armageddon) 

Having the vocalist of Protes Bengt fronting your band is always a good start. Slicka is off of the third LP by Sex Dwarf Påhittad Värld. The band has one foot in Sweden, one foot in Japan. Enriching their classic Swedish hardcore sound with crasher crust sensibility. Sex Dwarf playing outta Stockholm.

DEATH SENTENCE were a hardcore band from the 80’s and were from Burnaby. They were mind blowing. Recently a new song came out on their bandcamp which suggested they were active again. Here is an interview with the members of Death Sentence but we are going to start things off with my favourites.

Tonight we are celebrating 50 Years of CanCon and it’s influence on punk. On January 18th, 1971, Canadian Content became a part of the Broadcast Act and was implemented through minimum percentages of hourly Canadian airplay. You might have heard us use the term Can Con. It is a short form for Canadian Content. Like other countries in the world Canada became concerned about championing our own culture. In the 60s radio airplay was dominated by British and American acts. So on January 18th, 1971, Canadian Content requirements were added to the Broadcast Act. Radio stations were required to program somewhere between 25% which has now been increased to 40% of programming by Canadian artists. In Scandinavian countries their content requirements are higher to help preserve their culture with good success. And the same is true here. You can download this show here.

Dec 31, 2019 – BC Supreme Court grants Coastal GasLink an injunction for removal of obstacles
Jan. 1, 2020 – Wet’suwet’en First Nation serves Coastal GasLink with an eviction notice telling workers that they are trespassing on unceded territory
Jan 27th – BC Government appoints Nathan Cullen as provincial liaison
Jan 30th – The hereditary chiefs agree to seven days of meetings with the province
Feb 5th – Talks fail
Feb 6th – Protesters outside of Belleville start holding up railway traffic
Feb 7th VIA rail halts service in this transit corridor. CN obtains a court injunction to end the demonstration
Feb 8 – Protesters disrupt CP Rail in Toronto
Feb 9th Kahnawake Mohawk community members set up a blockade
Feb 10th – Demonstrators in Montreal disrupt commuter service
Feb 11th – CN stops trabnsport between Prince George and prince Rupert because of blockade near Hazelton, BC

Feb 12th - CN obtain court order for Manitoba protest. The RCMp say they have ended enforcement in BC, but they still have their trailers there.
Feb 14th – Blockade in BC is lifted as First nations agree to meet with Federal Government
Feb 15th – Indigeneous Services Minister Marc Miller meets with Mohawk First NationFeb 16th – A brief blockade shut down an Ontario border crossing
Feb 17th – Trudeau convenes an Incident response group for a national crisis. Moments later a brideg in the Thousand Islands closed as a result of a new blockade
Feb 24th - RCMP move in to close the blockade in Kahnawake. Another blockade opens up outside of Guelph

Tonight's demo feature is a brand new power violence band from Buffalo. The band features Corey from Inerds on vocals, Eric from Not Time Left / They Live on guitar, Chelsea from Human Touch / The Mallwalkers on bass, and Steve from Done Deal on drums. This recording was done on October 1st so this might be the first time you are hearing it. Death Sentence "Not a Pretty Sight" 12"

The recording for this 12" ep was a second place price won by the band in a local battle of the bands for which a riot ensued. The studio was located in an East Van basement. The 12" became a benchmark on all that is Canadian punk, hardcore, and crossover sound. The 12" was originally released on the band's own label Undergrowth, which came from the name of the band's demo tape. Fringe Records would go on to license and re-release the 12". The songs on this release are:

Death Sentence CD

In 2009 this label named Lazy B digitized “Not a Pretty Sight” and “Stop Killing Me” into a CD format. This is the Vancouver band and not the Australian name doppelganger. The band always had a DOA likeness to their sound, but those comparisons were largely because the singer, Pete Cleaver, sounded so much like Joey Shithead. It is uncanny. DEATH SENTENCE had a little heavier particularly on “Stop Killing Me”, but that material came out two years later after the band worked at getting bigger production.. As a result that material sounds like shit. But “Not a Pretty Sight” is incredible. We heard that record because Fringe licensed it in Toronto and as a result there were lots of copies around. As a result of this release I learned that it had originally come out on the band’s own label Undergrowth, which was the name of the band’s first demo. The opening track “Live to Die” reminds me of the BLACK DONNELLYS with the unrelenting build ups that just keep driving the song. And if I were to compare DEATH SENTENCE to anybody it would be DOA from the vocals, BLACK DONNELLYS from the pace and maybe some BAD BRAINS or GBH from a musical standpoint. One of Canada’s lesser known gems. Up there with bands like YYY and DIRECT ACTION. (Lazy B Records - #1, 650 West 6th Avenue / Vancouver B.C. / V5Z 1A5 / Canada)
