The Statics were a punk band that started up in the summer of 1979. They were from Port Credit and played a place called the New Port Hotel. In 2001 Squelchtone and Ugly Pop teamed up to release a single of long forgotten recordings. Over the past few months, the drummer Ross Johnson has been in touch with us and Dean Stilles of the band and the agreed to do an interview. This was recorded a couple of weeks back for tonight's program. Most of the songs have been recovered from original recordings spanning 1979 through to 1981.

The demo feature is Concrete Asylum from Halifax and their demo "City Sick" which you can get from bandcamp. The band features a member from Word on the Street, but Concrete Asylum take influences from the noisey speed merchants of the Mid-80's UK scene in bands like Ripcord or the Electro Hippies. This is great stuff.

Radio - Sunday May 20th, 2012

Tonight's show featured a couple of sets dedicated to the students in Quebec who have just been put under further attach by the Charest government given the new legistlations of restrictions to numbers of people who can gather and restrictions for people covering their face. We also dedicated the Hunchies song "Fuck Disco Beats" to Donna Summer. We played a set about religion which was dedicated to the Queen of Enlgland and the monarchs claim for ascenedency. Misty Rock n Roll brought a set of sunshine to mark a day that felt like the start of summer. And then we had a set that started off with a song about pizza because Kelly had just arrived to the show with a giant vegan tomato pie. The Statics "Original 1980 Punk Rock Recordings" ep

Glenn Salter found out about this band through a compilation that he came across at a flea market for Mississauga compilation called "Mississauga Live". Glenn tracked down the band and did an interview with various band members to find out the band's story which is an insert that coems with this single. Glenn approached Simon Harvey of Ugly Pop about  working together on this single and it comes out in April 2001 pressing 800 copies. It's a great little find especially given that the Statics were the only punk band on the comp.
The songs for this ep come from that comp. The recording was a live off the floor from the Newport Hotel, which was a place that bands from Mississauga played at.

I have heard from people that the song "Rebel Like Me" is the stand out on the single. It is the most punk sounding number of the three.

"Mr. Bill" is about the SNL plastiscene character that would get crushed in the end. the guitar sound is probably inspired by the band's love for Teenage Head although others have compared it to Chuck Berry.
The B-Side track "The Story" is an autobiographical story about the band. We do learn from the insert that the band had 10 originals, but I am not sure how many more were recorded.

Regardless, this was a great little archeoligical unearthing.
