Review - Hot Nasties "Invasion of the Tribbles" ep

This is a review of a re-issue of the Hot Nasties ep that originally came out in 1980. Ugly Pop re-released the ep and MRR wrote the review for this in the July issue (#350) of MRR.

Various Artists "Only in Canada, Eh '77-'81, Volume 1" CD

Punk History Canada pulled this compilation together. Unlike the "Smash the State" comps this release just showcased one song. As a result they were able to get loads of bands in on it. And they worked hard at getting regional representation. Unlike the Killed by Death comps, this one focused on Canada. The booklet contains interesting little anecdotes about all the bands found on the comp. The CD contains the follwoing songs:

Various Artists "Smash the State, Volume 1" LP

This was the first volume of what would become a series of comps that would pay tribute to out of press Canadian punk singles. It was a companion piece to the book by the same name and was compiled by Frank Manley and released under the label No Exit Records. Frank was living in Montreal at the time. I know because I distributed these in the city for him. Unlike the Killed by Death series, Frank received permission from the bands to press the eps on this LP format. As a result he was able to include a number art collages related to the band. below are scans of these pages. Click on them to open up larger versions of the pages.

This was a 7" that accompanied the release of the "Smash the State" booklet. It was limited to 500 copies and featured only one song from the band's 7". This was the first No Exit release. One side features bands from Alberta and one side featured bands from Ontario. The Wild Rose side had:

The Hot Nasties "The Invasion of the Tribbles" ep

The Hot Nasties were a punk band from Calgary. They started out as a band called Social Blemishes with a love of the Who and the Kinks. The band featured Warren Kinsella a.k.a. Nuclear Age on bass and vocals, Ras Pierre Schenk on lead guitar, Sane Wayne Ahern on rhythm guitar, and Tom Edwards on drums. This ep was re-released on the "Smash the State" comps that followed the book release. The Evaporators and Moe Berg would go on to cover Hot Nasties songs. The songs on here are:
