Last summer we spoke with John MacLeod about Johnny and the G-Rays around the launch of a film which captured a performance at the Palais Royale. The film is screening again next week on Thursday in Hamilton and Saturday at the Paradise in Toronto. We got to speak with John and Harri from the band just a couple of weeks ago and this is part of that conversation.

Review - Purity Control "Coping" ep

Review - Purity Control “Adjusting” ep

PURITY CONTROL is a great new hardcore band from Toronto that live in the power violence arena which is a place I like to dwell. The band features Payson who originally played in this little known band from Truro, Nova Scotia called CAPITAL DEATH. They were incredible and each of the band members have gone on to play in incredible bands (CAREER SUICIDE and the ENDLESS BLOCKADE to name two). Other members in this band moonlight in S.H.I.T. and ABYSS so the talent of this band is nothing to take lightly. They are power houses in their own right and when they get together they make this short sharp bursts of anger reminiscent of CROSSED OUT with the heavy bass driven structures found in PISSED HAPPY CHILDREN. These are cues from the some of the pillars in the power violence scene but the unrelentless speed at which songs like “Dear Life” are played at make you realize that this sound has been brought up to date. In fact, I have heard this described as breakneck bludgeoning music which I tend to think is accurate of the pace and heaviness at which PURITY CONTROL play. This recording was mixed and mastered by Will Killingsworth of ORCHID fame so that is something of note to all you Y2K emo violence followers. Various Artists "City Limits" LP

This is a brand new comp to come out on High Anxiety. Instead of being a city snapshot, High Anxiety has tried to capture two scene snapshots from cities who have had bitter rivalries in real life but where the punk scenes are concerned have a history of mutual respect and co-operation. Given that these bands are from Montreal or Toronto I keep thinking of the legendary "Primitive Air Raid" comp. "City Limits" evens out the representation more evenly then "Primitive Air Raid" with almost equal numbered bands and if it wasn't for the length of the four minute Inepsy and Unruled songs this would have been at even strength. In the striving to include as many bands as possible "City Limits" takes cues from some of the great Fans of Bad Productions comps like "Fuck the Commonwealth" or "Killed by Canada". However "City Limits" is able to focus on some scenes the way Schizophrenic's "Toronto City Omnibus" or "Toronto's Burning" comp has. The focus on cities reminds me of the MCR city comps, which is where Schizophrenic took some inspiration. But who is on this comp. Career Suicide are a staple to a lot of comps that have come out of Toronto and they deliver with a new unreleased song. And Brutal Knights and Urban Blight have loads of releases out themselves. Where comps make their distinction is in the new bands that they bring to the table. Purity Control, Total Trash, Molested Youth, Snakepit, the Slobs, the Omegas.....these are the sounds of the new scene. The Mad Men song is a cover of a rare Italian hardcore band from the mid-80's. See if you can figure it out.
