A few weeks back, on SHEXD #11, Christina was one of the guest hosts who was participating in the show for her last time because she is moving back to her native Australia. Sarde mentioned that it might be a good idea to have Christina come in a guest host a show and tonight's show was the first time we could get her in. Christina has been involved in the Toronto scene in a lot of amazing ways, but she approached the show by looking at bands from here, bands from Cleveland and bands from Australia. You can download an MP3 of the show here.
THE UGLIES – Make Punk Great Again (No Patience)
I mentioned that we had done a show on the early scene in Sydney related to a film and that MRR had done a show recently on weirdo punk from the early scene but Christina wanted to shine a focus on the contemporary scene as there are many scenes putting out a lot of great bands in various styles of punk. Here is the first of two sets on contemporary Aussie punk.
THE SKIDS – Deepest Grave (Shipping Steel)
DRUG SWEAT – Hectic Whipper (Aarght)
LOW LIFE - Dogging (RIP Society)
STRAIGHTJACKET NATION – Power It Up (Cool Death / La Vida Es Un Mus)
UBIK – Touch Off (Lost In Fog)
TYRANNAMEN - I Don’t Want to go to Jail (Cool Death / Static Shock)
Second set on Australian punk
BRANDO’S ISLAND - Duplicaat (Altered State)
58008 - Devolve (No Patience)
DEATH CHURCH – Jaw Crusher (No Patience)
MASSES - Crosses (Lost In Fog/Mass Media)
SPOTTING – Wait Your Turn (No Patience)
Christina had mad a number of trips to Cleveland when she was living in Melbourne. She explained how Cleveland has always had interesting bands, but again wanted to focus on the contemporary scene, which is partially what she has done with her label Blow Blood Records. Here is the first of two sets on Cleveland punk.
LACERATE – Despair (Konton Krasher)
THE COWBOY – The Cowboy (Fashionable Idiots / Blow Blood Records / Drunken Sailor)
MAGIC CITY – Free (Blow Blood)
PERVERTS AGAIN – Figgy Pudding (Non Commercial)
BRAINWASHED CALIFORNIA – Initials (Blow Blood)
THE SIGHT – Time Lapse (Blow Blood)
Second set on Cleveland
THE MISSED – Just Like Cellophane (Quality Time Records)
VANILLA POPPERS – Where You Told Me I Belong (Lumpy)
BULSCH – Innee Innee Outbawl (Blow Blood)
CRUELSTER – Terminal Windmill (Turbine Piss)
BAD NOIDS – Into the Future (Feel It)
KILL THE HIPPIES – Dig Your Own Grave (Phoenician MicroSystems)
INMATES – Skummy / Public Education (Human Stench)
Christina has lived in Toronto for the past couple of years. In that time she has gained an appreciation for punk from Canada, but the list of bands was a lot longer than what made it to air......
F.I.T.S. – Stupid Garbage Society (Blow Blood)
PROM NITE – No Motivation (Barfbag)
PROTRUDERS – Cold Energy (Self Released)
S.H.I.T. – Incorporation (La Vida Es Un Mus)

Shequalizing-X-Distort's 11th takeover of the airwaves, Girls of Summer 2017 edition of the show. Tonight's instigators were long time stalwarts Zoe and Sarde and first time co-hosts Mariam, Karla, and Christina who has been on before. Sarde started out with ESG and some apologies for the band not being punk enough, but it sounded great. A download of this show is available here.
ESG – It’s Alright
Sarde started off with a dedication to Marjie and also talked about Not Dead Yet which is coming up soon and how the festival will be different without Soybomb. She also mentioned a great meme that Rosie from Outcry started for this year's fest.
HAGAR THE WOMB – Idolization
BOOJI BOYS – Plaza Too Perfect (Self-Released)
1-900’s – Trained Dog
PLAYBOY – The Weather
RIK AND THE PIGS – TV Bloopers
Zoe was teased for being such a media darling this past few weeks with her street health work that has spearheaded some IDU sites including a pop up site and has led to some funding finally. In fact she is being interviewed again in the morning and is a real trooper coming out tonight. But Zoe also speaks about applying your punk ethics in a real life way.
GAZM - Fuck You (Self-Released)
OUTCRY - It's a Joke (Self-Released)
CAMERA SILENS - Squatt
DAME - Glitch
CIRCUIT 7 - Video Boys
Mariam is somewhat new to the city but used to be the zine coordinator at MRR and did a punk radio show in Chicago where she is originally from. Mariam has also sung in five punk bands the most recent being Permanent Ruin and pulled together a set of little known bands that reflect a number of things.
UNSUB – Trapped
INDIREKT – Groten Ult Holland
FUMIGADOS – Pendeme
DRUJ – War Hymns
QUE LASTIMA – Paradise
Karla plays in Pure Pressure and is moving back to Victoria after NDY 2017. Karla is organizing a screening about a film that explores the moral dilemma between veganism and First Nation's hunting and trapping rights.
BLINDSIDE USA – Not Punk
TOMAR CONTROL – Haz le Diferencia
PURA MANIA – Grandes Esperanzas
DIASPORA – In Place
MALA RACHA – Land of the Free
Christina sings in the Vanilla Poppers and runs Blowback Records. She is moving back to Australia after NDY 2017 and pulled together an all Canadian set as a way of saying goodbye. But we have invited Christina back to guest host a show before she goes and delight us with an exploration of Aussie punk.
PROM NITE – No Motivation (Self-Released)
THE PROTRUDERS – Cold Energy
SIYAHKAL – Pari Bolandeh
THE BOYS – Big Boy, Big Attitude
Everyone ran out of time with material and so the last set was a combined set between Zoe and Sarde.
SECT – Masters and Slaves

THE YOBS - Auld Land Syne (Captain Oi!)
The Yobs with Auld Land Syne which is the song you may have heard last night signifing the New Year. And as we leave the old year and begin a new I want to say that I have heard enough “Year in Review” shows to slit my throat. So many of them lamenting people who have passed away and tonight's show is not immune from such a list (see Sarde's list of bands that broke up in 2016).
So Stephe prepared his favourite Canadian punk releases from last year and here is what he liked best starting with Absolute, who were in his top 10 list from last year with “Hell’s Highest Power”. They came out with a split with PARANOID shortly after which is even more devastating and didn't find out about until 2016 even though technically it was released in 2015.

3. BORN WRONG – Disposable (Schizophrenic / Rebel Time)

TRIAGE - Power Beat (Larry Tony Produzioni)
ARMS RACE - Slander and Abuse (La Vida Es Un Mus)
BLAZING EYE - Ways to Die (Self-Released)
Sarde prepared a list of bands that broke up in 2016. An In Memorium set list, Rest In Power.

In fundraising tradition we start off by playing name that tune with DJ Brown from the Prophesy as he used to be a ska DJ prior to becoming a junglist. We look for a ska like cover done by a hardcore or punk band. We chose a recent cover of the Slickers done by DOA. Please donate to CIUT at www.ciut.fm. You can download a copy of the show here.
DOA – Johnny Too Bad (Sudden Death)
SHEXD is one of the most popular segments on the show, so we start out by paying tribute to the multiple nuggets of programming they are involved in that have spun off into other things on the show and for that we are grateful. The CURSE because Mickey Skin showed up for the first ever SHEXD, STRANGLED because Zoe tipped us off to this new band from Edmonton, and OUTCRY because the singer was involved in the most recent instalment of SHEXD. That is a small list of contributions. Check out the –SHEXD tag for more of Chloe, Zoe, Sarde, and Marji’s contributions because they are many
THE CURSE - Shoeshine Boy (Hi Fi)
STRANGLED - White Noise (Crude City)
OUTCRY – Chatter (Self-Released)
We often pull together sets of bands love for radio. Here is a set that expresses pun band’s thought on radio starting off with
THE STOOGES – 1969
THE JOLTS – Radio man
THE UGLY – Hell Time (Other Peoples Music)
Last week we played a new band from Vancouver called VILEINS featuring Shawn Lovblom, who used to sing in the Reprobates. We don’t often get listener feedback so I thought I would share what he wrote. “Thanks for the airtime, I'm loving the soviet theme you've been doing, I've been really getting into a Russian band called Knho, with Victor Tsoi. not exactly hard stuff but I do like it. Anyways, I'm stuck working many hours for a couple more weeks, then I can catch up on all the good programming from you. Thanks for all you do.” That was nice to hear.
Also last week we heard from a Jose who did translation for us with Arrabio and Adictox from Cuba and is also a listener of the show. He wrote to thank us for the feature we did on Colombia. He started messaging with the singer from Secta Suicida who knew the bands and said it was a solid playlist. Then he heard his band being played, which is one of those once in a lifetime moments. We learned of a number of partnerships going on between Montreal and Colombia like Malokio just getting back from touring there and Parasites heading down and doing a slit release with Secta Suicida. These partnerships seem unique to the punk scene. Jose is originally from Mexico and he agreed to put together a show on Mexico, which we have started planning. That will air in the next few months. The research has begun. In the meantime here are a few early punk bands from Mexico
DANGEROUS RHYTHM - The Bar (Orfeon Videovox)
SIZE – Strategy (Rock n Roll Circus)
REBEL’D PUNK - Mi Nueva Nación (Discos Cobra)
The live studio 3 sessions are such a big component to the show. Shawna has been in with Arson on January 5th, 2011, Sluts on 45 on September 17th, 2013 and Artificial Dissemination on June 3rd,2015. And Jamie has been in with the Rezentments on January 21st, 2014, and with Artificial Dissemination on June 3rd, 2014. I asked both about their experiences with the sessions.
ARTIFICIAL DISSEMINATION – GMO (CIUT)
KATATONIX – Rip Off (CIUT)
Vince was in on July 10th, 2013 with Make No Gains and more recently with the Katatonix on March 15th, 2016. Vince also talked about what being on CIUT has meant for getting connected with the scene. We played a yet to be aired song b the Katatonix.
LEATHER UPPERS – Supercar (Past It)
RADIO STARS - Dirty Pictures (Chiswick)
LIGHTMARES – Money Woes (Self-Released)
WAYOUTS – No Time (Wayout)

We started off with Negative Approach and “Why Be Something That You’re Not” the song that became the title for the cable access show in Lansing Michigan and more recently the title of a book by Tony Rettman on Detroit Hardcore. I spoke with Tony back in October when he was in for the in-store talk with Damian Abraham at Faith/Void and convinced him to come over to CIUT and do an interview for this show. He has been very patient waiting for this to get to air and tonight we air that interview. We start off by talking about this song and the name for the book.
Throughout the show there was some technical difficulties with the interview which were just technical screw ups on my behalf so to hear the interview without the screw ups download this.
If you want to hear the show with all the screw ups the MP3 file is here.

Shequalizing-X-Distort returns for an annual International Women's Day broadcast with hosts Sarde, Zoe, Marji, and Chloe. They also had a guest host in from Halifax named Rosie who currently sings in Outcry and formerly played guitar in Vixens, who were out here for a Not Dead Yet show. The show features material so new that in one instance it was recorded yesterday. There is historical and contemporary punk being played side by side. There are mad shout outs throughout the program and hilarious banter one story of which involved a beatdown between Humpty Dumpty and Miss Vickies. Not to be missed. Photos and playlist coming soon. Lydia Athanasopolous was the most recent MRR zine co-ordinator for the past three years. She was in Toronto around the time SHEXD was on back in December and appeared on that show. She graciously stayed afterwards into the wee hours of the morning to answer questions about how she got into punk and MRR, The Greek scene, how MRR gets put together, what the legendary library looks like, some of the projects MRR is currently involved in and what she is getting into next. I felt inspired afterwards and Lydia de-mystifies what happens on the compound. You can download the show here.
