SUNDOWNER - I've Seen It Happen (Self-released)

That was the song “I’ve Seen It Happen” played as a tribute to the passing of Nick Gergesha. Nick played in many bands. I had recently reconnected with Nick in his latest band Workers Comp. He reminded me of a studio 3 session we recorded with his old band Brauer back on February 10, 2015. So we immediately started talking about recording a session with Workers Comp. The first session was postponed but we re-scheduled largely due to Nick’s enthusiasm for these kind of sessions. Workers Comp were supposed to record the weekend that Nick passed but he had taken ill. I didn’t know the situation and started thinking maybe the band was telling me they didn’t want to do the session without telling me. I feel terrible now knowing what had transpired. I had many conversations with Nick in the last year and they were all so motivating. We were also hoping to have Workers Comp play a benefit for Ukraine. Nick’s passing saddens me in ways. I feel like I was developing this friendship with a past acquaintance and then that opportunity disappeared overnight. It’s a sense of loss I don’t often feel. If you knew Nick and want to pay your last respects there will be a visitation on Monday December 29 from 4:00pm-8:00pm at the Highland Funeral Home. There will be a funeral service for Nick on Tuesday December 30th from 11:00am-12:00pm.

This is episode 1368 of EXD and was put together by Andre Zadorozny, Christian Overall, and Stephen Perry. On this edition :
  • A feature length interview with Lisa Bat. Who is Lisa Bat? Lisa is a behind the scenes kind of person who I have heard about for decades. She left Toronto to become part of the biggest hardcore scenes in the early days and her stories have this Forest Gump like curiosity that lead from one adventure to the next.
  • New releases by No More Moments, Black Budget, Verdict, and Night Feeder Here is one of those new release features

GETTING STABBED - Concrete Future (Damien

NO PRESSURE - Good Enough (Triple B
ENERVATE - Pass Me By (Self-Released)
SCUM COP - Fuck Being Positive (Loner Cult

Lisa Bat interview
Lisa Bat is a person that has been referenced a few times on the show. Pete Jones first mentioned Lisa to me about a Crucifix show he did that LIsa had helped arrange in the background. Lisa was kind of this larger than life person to me that I didn’t realize was living in the city. I was speaking with Derek Emerson about Lisa when he told me how to reach her. Lisa roadied for MDC, did promotion work for the Rock Against Reagan tour. Lisa did artwork for bands like Verbal Abuse, Cause for Alarm, and SCUM. Lisa helped money manage SCUM so that they could record their album. And she went to Europe to experience Chaos Days. We did this interview months ago and I have been editing it for weeks and the other day I was reflecting on how Lisa lived these punk adventures the way Forest Gump’s character is portrayed. She found herself in the midst of every interesting punk scene that existed in the second wave and she figured out how to play a part in them.

Anarchist Corner
THE EX were a band from Amsterdam that started out in 1979. The band started out in the squat movement and were inspired by bands like the Fall and the Mekons. The band was known as an anarcho-punk band but they were also associated with the post punk scene. Rumour is that the band spent the first six months on graffiti advertising. The first release is this song on the Utreg Punx compilation.

THE EX - Stupid Americans (Rock Against)
THE EX - Cells (He / Superior Viaduct)

In June 1980, The Ex released their first EP, All Corpses Smell the Same. The most striking features of the music are the strongly rhythmic guitar attacks and the dogged way in which Sok spit the words into the microphone. The lyrics deal with politics, squatting, and social injustice. The band's first full-length album, Disturbing Domestic Peace, was released later the same year.

THE EX - Outlook-Army (Verrecords / Eh)

Shortly after these recording were released, Geurt left the band and was replaced by Willem from the Rondos. René left the band and was replaced by Bas on the bass. In 1982, The Ex released their second album, History is What's Happening; this album is seen as a musical evolution. Many of the songs were created during live performances. Two tracks from The Ex were included on the compilation album Oorwormer. In 1982, Willem left the band and was replaced by Sabien on the drums.

THE EX - Dutch Disease (More Dirt Per Minute)

In April 1983, the Ex released their third album, Tumult, produced by Jon Langford of the Mekons. A few months later, their 12 inch Gonna Rob The Spermbank was also released; this record contained four songs that were also recorded during the recording session of Tumult. In 1983, The Ex also released the album Dignity Of Labor, which appeared as a box containing four 7" singles and a book. The singles each contained eight untitled tracks that deal with the demise of the Wormer-based Van Gelder paper factory. Bas left the band and was replaced by the new bassists Luc and Joke. In the fall of 1983, The Ex did their first tour of England. A product of this tour is the split 12" The Red Dance Package that The Ex released in collaboration with the band Alerta.

THE EX - The Well-Known Soldier (F.A.I. / Fist Puppet)
THE EX - Kidnap Connection

This is off the double album “Blueprints For A Blackout” released in March 1984. This album included more improvisation, and new musical instruments were used, including violin, oboe, marimba, and oil barrels. During this period, The Ex consisted of five band members who adopted "Ex" as their last name. In 1986, The Ex recorded the double single 1936: The Spanish Revolution. The double single contained Spanish folk songs, and a 144 page booklet on the Spanish Revolution. I remember the band talking about how they were exhausted by all the research put into this project.

THE EX - They Shall Not Pass (Ron Johnson / The Ex)

In 1987, the EX teamed up with the English punk band Chumbawamba under the name Antidote to record the single Destroy Fascism! which is released on Loony Tunes Records.

ANTIDOTE - Education (Part 2) (Looney Tunes)

In October 1989, the Ex launched their first American tour with the Canadian band NoMeansNo. That’s when I would see them at a show at the Rivoli. In November, the Ex release their next album which is a double album Joggers & Smoggers. This album is more experimental and jazzy, and features many guest musicians, including members of Sonic Youth and Ab Baars.

THE EX - Nosey Parker

In 1991, the Ex started their singles project. They offered a subscription where subscribers paid 36 guilders to receive a new single every two months for a year. Each single contained four songs recorded during a performance at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, where The Ex was supported by guest musicians Ab Baars, Han Bennink, and Wolter Wierbos. The Ex also start their collaborations with Tom Cora who is a celloist. Adds a different dimension to what they are doing. Here’s a song off their second record together which comes out in 1993 (And the weathermen shrugs their shoulders). The first one comes out in 1991.

THE EX - Conviction Going Gaga

The following year the EX start doing dance performances and the year after they start experimenting with blues. The band would continue to be very active until 2011 doing many interesting things, but that is for wikipedia to tell you and not a punk show.
