Radio - Sunday, July 19th, 2020

Tonight's show is hosted by Rob and Jose. Rob starts out with some garage and early punk with originals followed by covers. There is also a lot of early New Zealand punk in the opening sets, which includes a post Split Enz band called the Swingers formed out of the Suburban Reptiles. There is a set of Canadian punk followed by a set of punk featuring bands with women and references to some cool DIY comps that inspired the sets. Jose brings some raging punk sung in Spanish. And then another raging set of new hardcore. Download the show here

They have a new album called "Canibal" and we heard the song La Mataron. Bait from Barcelona were next with their song called: No Sense, they released an Ep this month called Another End Of The World Is Possible. Another new band from Peru called Vejamen and a song called Aquel Que Creian Muerto. The set finished with a new band from Mexico City, called Insolencia and a song called Condena Inmunda. Thanks to my friend Ukre from Mexico for sending me this. Ukre is the organizer of a yearly international festival called "Destruxiones" and he also runs a youtube channel called "Mexikaaos" where he is constantly uploading new bands and doing compilations with such bands.

Subdued started it out with a song called Sanctuary is Nowhere from their debut album "Over The Hills And Far Away". Right after that we heard another bad ass band called The Annihilated with a song called Push Me Around/Abuse Of Power, The Annihilated features Mr Ryan Tong on bass. Ryan is better known for being vocals on my favorite Toronto band S.H.I.T and even though Ryan moved to the UK S.H.I.T is Not Dead Yet, (No Pun Intended). They are still playing and they also just released a sick ass live recording of their pre pandemic performance at IDRIMA a squat in the middle of Athens Greece, and we heard a song of this recording called "Ekfosvismos/Ensomátosi". Right after that we heard a new band from New York called Tower 7 with a song called Zero Zum. They released this tape last May.
The set ended with Tokyo crasher crusties, L.I.F.E. They just released their third album called "Ossification of Coral" and it fucking rips. The name of the song was The End of Mother Nature, and as the title of the record implies, this is also a record to raise awareness of the importance of the ecosystem and the exploitation of coral reefs. We got to see Life at Varning Fest in 2016 lets hope they come back with this release.

THE CAVEMEN - Night After Night (Slovenly)
GREEN/BLUE - Police Street (Slovenly)

Radio - Sunday, September 10th, 2017

A few weeks back, on SHEXD #11, Christina was one of the guest hosts who was participating in the show for her last time because she is moving back to her native Australia. Sarde mentioned that it might be a good idea to have Christina come in a guest host a show and tonight's show was the first time we could get her in. Christina has been involved in the Toronto scene in a lot of amazing ways, but she approached the show by looking at bands from here, bands from Cleveland and bands from Australia. You can download an MP3 of the show here

THE UGLIES – Make Punk Great Again (No Patience)

I mentioned that we had done a show on the early scene in Sydney related to a film and that MRR had done a show recently on weirdo punk from the early scene but Christina wanted to shine a focus on the contemporary scene as there are many scenes putting out a lot of great bands in various styles of punk. Here is the first of two sets on contemporary Aussie punk.

THE SKIDS – Deepest Grave (Shipping Steel)
DRUG SWEAT – Hectic Whipper (Aarght)
LOW LIFE - Dogging (RIP Society)
STRAIGHTJACKET NATION – Power It Up (Cool Death / La Vida Es Un Mus)
UBIK – Touch Off (Lost In Fog)
TYRANNAMEN - I Don’t Want to go to Jail (Cool Death / Static Shock)

Second set on Australian punk
BRANDO’S ISLAND - Duplicaat (Altered State)
58008 - Devolve (No Patience)
DEATH CHURCH – Jaw Crusher (No Patience)
MASSES - Crosses (Lost In Fog/Mass Media)
SPOTTING – Wait Your Turn (No Patience)

Christina had mad a number of trips to Cleveland when she was living in Melbourne. She explained how Cleveland has always had interesting bands, but again wanted to focus on the contemporary scene, which is partially what she has done with her label Blow Blood Records. Here is the first of two sets on Cleveland punk.

LACERATE – Despair (Konton Krasher)
THE COWBOY – The Cowboy (Fashionable Idiots / Blow Blood Records / Drunken Sailor)
MAGIC CITY – Free (Blow Blood)
PERVERTS AGAIN – Figgy Pudding (Non Commercial)
BRAINWASHED CALIFORNIA – Initials (Blow Blood)
THE SIGHT – Time Lapse (Blow Blood)

Second set on Cleveland
THE MISSED – Just Like Cellophane (Quality Time Records)
VANILLA POPPERS – Where You Told Me I Belong (Lumpy)
BULSCH – Innee Innee Outbawl (Blow Blood)
CRUELSTER – Terminal Windmill (Turbine Piss)
BAD NOIDS – Into the Future (Feel It)
KILL THE HIPPIES – Dig Your Own Grave (Phoenician MicroSystems)
INMATES – Skummy / Public Education (Human Stench)

Christina has lived in Toronto for the past couple of years. In that time she has gained an appreciation for punk from Canada, but the list of bands was a lot longer than what made it to air......

F.I.T.S. – Stupid Garbage Society (Blow Blood)
PROM NITE – No Motivation (Barfbag)
PROTRUDERS – Cold Energy (Self Released)
S.H.I.T. – Incorporation (La Vida Es Un Mus)
NO NEGATIVE – Cellophane (Swollen City)

FAZE – No Loss (Runstate)
DOXX – Shoplifted (Self Released)
TEENANGER - Just Drop It (Telephone Explosion)

MRR Review - Teenanger "Singles Don't Sell" LP

I think the title is a statement by the band who puts out their own releases and does their own distribution and has probably had bad luck with 45 releases. This review is in the January issue of MRR (#368).

Zine - EXD - Volume 12, Issue 03

CHRONIC SUBMISSION were from what I consider the legendary first wave of the Toronto hardcore scene. They were kids at the time and not taken very seriously, that is until they hit the stage. They played a start and stop style of hardcore unheard of in our local scene until bands like MDC and DRI made it through town. They would later pick up on the metal side forging a local crossover sound which characterized material after their second tape. There were some unsavoury stories to this period, as well, which is better to hear from them. This PDF contains the story of CHRONIC SUBMISSION so click on the cover and download the issue.
