The Victoria Day weekend is all about drinkin', colloquially known as the May 2-4 weekend for the 24 beers in a case. Most Canadians get away and get loaded in the woods. Teenage Head have one of the best drinking songs so we started the show with that. You can download the whole show here.

House of Commons "Guilty as Hell" CD

Welly of Artcore pulls together all of the recorded material by Vancouver's House of Commons. The first seven songs come from a mini LP titled "Patriot". This record originally came out in 1983 and was recorded by Rob Wright of NoMeansno. These songs are:

The other materials comes from a later demo recorded in 1985 and may have been unreleased. These songs are:

Artcore also has a myspace site at www.myspace.com/artcorefanzine. The CD has video footage of the band to so it is an enhanced CD. These guys rage like Death Sentence.

Various Artists "All Your Ears Can Hear" Double CD

This is a truly amazing compilation. It is one of those scene documentary pieces but instead of it being a film this is a comp. Jason Flower was the main person behind the project and as a result the comp needed to be on 2 CDs. An amazing book where each band participating gets a page that is used to help find out details on them. And the scene they document is their own which is in Victoria, BC. Vancouver is documented pretty well but the scene that NoMeansNo grew out of isn't. The Neos is probably the only other band really known from here and that is only by hardcore collectors. And being geographically isolated Victoria had a chance to develop on thier own more so than other scenes that were on touring routes. As a result you get a snapshot of just some collected highlights of Victoria. You can inquire at Supreme Echo about the availability of this comp but I doubt there is any left. Various Artists "Only in Canada, Eh '77-'81, Volume 1" CD

Punk History Canada pulled this compilation together. Unlike the "Smash the State" comps this release just showcased one song. As a result they were able to get loads of bands in on it. And they worked hard at getting regional representation. Unlike the Killed by Death comps, this one focused on Canada. The booklet contains interesting little anecdotes about all the bands found on the comp. The CD contains the follwoing songs:

Scene report - Flipside 49

Issue 49 of Flip Side Magazine had a scene report on Canada. Loads of pictures of bands from late 1985 early 1986. the section was pulled together by Ugly Parasite fanzine and features photos of Death Sentence, Hype, Sudden Impact, October Crisis, Fair Warning, Trapt, Bill of Rights, Direct Action, BFG, DOA, House of Commons, Sons of Ishmael, No Mind, SNFU, and Nomeansno.

A.K.O.B. "Another Kind of Blues" ep

A.K.O.B. were a hardcare band from Vancouver. The band was made up of former members of the House of Commons. As might be assumed by the name of the band they were influenced by the UK Subs. This 6 song 12" was released by Undergrowth Records which was responsible for other 12" like Death Sentence, NoMeansNo, Snakefinger and a comp called Undergrowth '85. The label was run by Laurie Mercer who was the manager of NoMeansNo. I found out a bunch of material about the label at a blog called O'Canadarm.

MRR Scene Report - Vancouver, March 1985

Brian and Bill report on teh vancouver scene in March 1985. House of Commons just broke up. A band called NG3 formed out of their break up. Bill of Rights release "Meltdown '85" and add another member to the band. There is also some information about the Unknown Fibers, Immoral Minority, Polly Anna Slaughterhouse, the Fits, Legion of Doom, Social Menace, the Spores, Shanghai Dogs, and the Dispossessed. I get the sense that this was teh first ever comp to document the Victoria scene. This is almost excusively bands from vancouver island with a few exceptions.
