Pinoy punk

Tonight’s show is co-hosted by Jim Agapito from Winnipeg. Jim does a podcast on the CBC called “Recovering Filipino” but more importantly, Jim is in a punk band from there and has been part of the Winnipeg punk scene for a few decades.

Tonight’s show is similar to other features we have done on other countries in that we will be looking at the origins of the punk scene from the Philippines. But there are some differences like we will look at Filipino punks in diaspora with a focus on the US and Canada. But we are going to start at the beginning with Third World Chaos and Twisted Red Cross. Download the show here

THIRD WORLD CHAOS - Rebel Rockers (Twisted Red Cross)

The Twisted Red Cross years
So technically the next band may have pre-dated THIRD WORLD CHAOS in terms of starting up as the formed in 1980 but they formed in Queens, NY so the recording you are going to hear is a lot more amped up in a NYHC way as that scene had already started. The band members go to start going to university in the Philippines in 1982 and form a couple of bands that eventually becomes that BETRAYED. This recording comes out with the turmoil of the last year of Ferdinand Marcos’ brutal regime which was marked by military intervention.

BETRAYED - Military Rule (Twisted Red Cross)
DEAD ENDS - Not Stopping Us (Twisted Red Cross)
URBAN BANDITS - Hoy (Twisted Red Cross)
I.O.V. - Vagrancy (Twisted Red Cross)
PHILIPPINE VIOLATORS - School Violence (Twisted Red Cross)
R.D.A. - Lesson For (Twisted Red Cross)

Young Angry Bands / United Hate era
A scene grew up around a band called DRASTIC NOISE. DRASTIC NOISE released a cassette called “Combatants of Anarchy” on their own label called United Hate. Then they proceeded to release two compilations of other bands from the Philippines called “Young Angry Bands”. Vocalist John John Serna worked with a major label called Aquarius to put these out which produced and got them distributed.

Pinoy Punk in diaspora - Canada

Pinoy punk also had an influence on a number of Canadian scenes. We’re going to start off with a band that I was in in the 90’s called One Blood. The band featured another singer by the name of Melanya Aguila. Melanya was good friend’s with my sister and stayed in the punk scene becoming one of our singer’s. Melanya would go on to start a record label called Fans of Bad Productions, start a super influential zine called Femzine, and then start doing video documentaries. I had chance to catch up with Melanya to ask her about these projects and her experience growing up in the scene.

Pub Night studio 3 session

It was our first blast at winter. It snowed yesterday for the first of the season and it is supposed to snow again tomorrow, but today we get a little reprieve from precipitation. To be honest I can't get the  Asta Kask "Med Is I Magen" cover out of my head. If only the snow were to stick around. But it is too early in the season for accumulation. Anyway loading in during the cold is never pleasant and makes you asks those questions why am I still doing this until you realize that some of these guys are your best friends and you never get to see them anymore. I have known Paul the longest. He played drums in the first real band that I ever got to play in. We were housemates for many years and he let me participate in a zine he did called Drastic Solutions. But Paul  is more currently known as the guitarist in Legion666 where he got to explore his kang side. he is back to playing drums in Pub Night.

Pat, played bass in the Blundermen, which was a band that was SLF inspired and I put out a 10" of theirs on my label Ragamuffin Soldier Records. Paul played in a band with Pat before that called Kops for Christ that Gusher Records released. More recently Pat is in an oi inspired band called Overpower that have never gotten to see because half of them are from Montreal and so making that band work has its challenges. We have talked about having them play on the show but scheduling became a nightmare that neither of us broached. But I do think that Overpower was an inspiration for this new band in remaining the front man. These are the gruffest vocals I have ever heard Pat do. And this is the first time I have heard him play guitar.

I know Ian from further back than his Blowhard days but Blowhard is what I remember him in being in. The interview reveals more band's that Ian has played in and some with some combination of these people.

I saw Pub Night in the spring opening for the Angelic Upstarts. I spoke to them that night about coming on the radio show. Six months later it is happening.

I was surprised to learn that Joel had joined the band. Not only did I not realize they had added a member since their first show, but I would have never guessed it would have been Joel because I have never pictured Joel as being into early 80's oi music. But why not Joel. He had played in Rammer as a lick master. He plays in Absolut currently. I knew he liked straight edge music, so it shouldn't be a shock that he would like and master this too. But Joel has just joined so he is working out where he fits in. So this is one of those rare early recordings by a band. Ian Wilkinson recorded tonight's session. The songs recorded include:

1. The Bottle
2. Another Round
3. Skins in Law
4. Panic
5. Last Call
6. Going down the bar (Wretched Ones cover)

Then we did a bunch of station IDs:

7. It's Pub Night on CIUT
8. It's Pub Night on CIUT in Espanol
9.  Equalizing Distort ID
10. CIUT ID

And there were a lot of camera angles for this session by Candy and Aldo. I believe this is Candy's first attempt at editing the session. And Candy also shot photos while holding two videocameras which was insane to watch. She is a juggler.

Radio - Sunday, May 12th, 2013

The show starts out with a Justn Ludwig interview. Justin just released a feature length film on evangelist hardcore called "Christ Core". Justin was in Toronto last Saturday and we spoke to hm before his first screening where he was here in town doing a series of Q & As on his film. I was a little excited to talk to him about his film and wound up cutting him off a little to many times, but he was a good sport about trying to answer my recollections about his film. He is a super nice guy and you can read more about his film on Facebook. You can also download the show as an MP3 file.

I was listening to "Democracy Now" on Saturday and they did a feature on the MOVE bombing that took place on Mother's Day in 1985. I was looking for songs based around the interview with Ramona Africa and the other interviews with Angela Davis and Mumia Abu-Jamal. The first song was a specch by Angela Davis at Convocation Hall the night the first Gulf War was launched. I wish I had Anti-Flag's "Mumia's Song" and I mis cued the Propagandhi song which used a COINTELPRO reference. But Aus Rotten's song is an understatement of Ramona Africa's assessment which was a campaign of extermination.

One Blood "Building a World of Prosperity with the Efficiency of the Free Enterprise System" LP

This was our full length LP. We recorded it at Pete Hudson Studios in July 1991 over a couple of weekends. Although two of the tracks were recorded a year earlier at a different studio. The record was teh first release on Germ Blandsten Records, which was a label that Charles Maggio started up. Charles was from New Jersey and sang in Rorschach and we got to meet him when he came up to play a bunch of shows in Southern Ontario. Charles dug us and wanted to put us out as his first release. There was a big newsprint booklet included in the record that has lyric and graphics about each song. Omar's brother played harmonica at the beginning of "Indian Summer". This was our last release although we had planned for more. The songs on here are:
1. Indian Summer
2. Settler Nations
3. Make the Links
4. Reform Party
5. Safe
6. Can You Feel It?
7. Operation Exodus
8. The Heat Is On
9. Uncle Joe's Revenge
10. Guardian Angel
11. Life Vision
12. Opinion Control in the Democracies
