Show Review - Human Target / Nuclear Man (Winnipeg showcase)

Got to see the Nuclear Man show on Friday night. The No No Room is in the basement of Dock Ellis and is near the location of the infamous Faith/Void. The space is run by Brad Manners of School Damage and fits about 60 people capacity. Perfect for punk shows. Bee, the drummer, from Kleener organized the show. Nuclear Man went on first and they shouted out Winnipeg and Regina at the beginning of their set. They were able to get a crowd reaction right away. Kleener were next and they ripped through a set challenged by landing endings. But the bass and drums drove that sound and the singer was able to move into the audience in a way that stirred things up. Human Target featured some members of Nuclear Man and others making me think of Fuck bands but this was no Fuck Band. They played a crushing set. Tashme topped it off with some a bass sound that was part Lip Cream part Cro Mags part something else. The drummer was insanely good. This whole band was solid as you will hear in these recordings.

Johnny and the G-Rays 

Last summer we spoke with John MacLeod about Johnny and the G-Rays around the launch of a film which captured a performance at the Palais Royale. The film is screening again next week on Thursday in Hamilton and Saturday at the Paradise in Toronto. On this episode of Equalizing-X-Distort – a feature interview with some of the authors of a new book on Anti Racist Action called We Go Where They Go. We speak with Kristin Schwartz and Shannon Clay about ARA’s origin story. We focused on the Toronto chapter and how they took on various racist organization’s in the city which led to stories of shady autocrats and an attempt to turn a Caribbean island into a drug state to finance these racist countries a la Iran-Contra style. We talk about how resourceful ARA became as a grassroots organization. We talked about ARA’s legacy. All this in anticipation for their book launch on Thursday (April 20th). And there are a lot of anti-racist punk anthems mixed in with the interview.

In all the coverage of Charlottesville one chant at the protests that I keep hearing is the intro to MDC's "Born to Die" which is the phrase "No War, No KKK, No Fascist USA". It is one of my all time favourite hardcore songs and it makes me proud to hear a song like that being yelled in the streets in opposition to things happening in the States. So we started off the show with MDC and a rant about what has been happening in Charlottesville. Here is an MP3 file of the show.

In an unrelated coincidence the song came out on an album called “The Nutty Anti-Christ: which featured Jerry Lewis on the cover dressed up as the devil. Jerry Lewis passed away yesterday.

If you have been listening to “Democracy Now” this week you have been hearing interviews with Cornell West who has talked about how the white nationalists locked the group in a church while they carried torches and threaten to burn it down, while the police stood back and let the white nationalists engage in this terrorism Antifa stepped into save the people in the church. they would be dead. Democracy Now interviewed Mark Bray, who wrote a book called "Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook".

In Baltimore two statues were removed. In Memphis crowds linked arms and called for the removal of Jefferson Davis. The movement is growing.

Victim Party studio 3 session

It has taken us a while to book Victim Party. They are one of the biggest bands we have recorded with two singers, two guitarists and a rhythm section. Colin and Pat have recorded a studio 3 session or two with Hostage Life, but that was back at the basement at St. George. The third floor digs allow us to isolate things like drums and guitar amps, which help at the mixing stage. But we had five plus people in the broadcast studio and somehow it worked. 

The band was set on recording their latest LP along with one additional song. The full length is called "Getting to know the Victim Party" and has a few themes that weave the material together. But each member, past and present has a song about them and in a very literal way this serves as in introduction to the members of the band. These songs include:

- Adam Cook, Extinguished Gentleman (original bassist)
- Weekend at Kyle's (drummer)
- Tabi Irani, Tragically Fascist or Fascistically Tragic (singer)
- Matt Woo (and you can too) (bassist)
- You're Great, I'm Dean Richards (guitarist)
- Patrick Mathers cuts the sleeves off your expectations (guitarist)

There is an opening number which is about a party and is called "Spring Mixer". And there is a song that predicts the band's break up called "Irreconcilable Similarities". The additional song is "100 Assholes" which is a song pulled together from two earlier songs which were "100 Laces" and "Poets and other assholes". Colin's singing was familiar and amazing. Tabi's vocals were sung and held in a soulful way that sounded like Delta 72 or Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex. The two singing styles together is unique and as we went through the songs I realized that this band spends a lot of time on vocal arrangements. That is true of my most favourite punk bands like the Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, the Angelic Upstarts and it is amazing to hear it in a local band. But I find the vocal arrangements are a lot more complex in Victim Party's material,  in a way that invites singing along, head bobbing and foot stomping. 

A two guitar attack between Dean and Pat make for a full sound. Matt Woo on bass and Adam's brother Kyle plays bass. Adam was the original bass player in this band and played with Colin in Marilyn's Vitamins. This may be helpful in some family tree sort of way on the scene in the future.

This session was recorded by Ian Wilkinson who also recorded the Hostage Life session a few years back.

Tonight's show featured a couple of sets dedicated to the students in Quebec who have just been put under further attach by the Charest government given the new legistlations of restrictions to numbers of people who can gather and restrictions for people covering their face. We also dedicated the Hunchies song "Fuck Disco Beats" to Donna Summer. We played a set about religion which was dedicated to the Queen of Enlgland and the monarchs claim for ascenedency. Misty Rock n Roll brought a set of sunshine to mark a day that felt like the start of summer. And then we had a set that started off with a song about pizza because Kelly had just arrived to the show with a giant vegan tomato pie. This issue came out in June 2003 and featured a new band from the Schomberg/Bradford area called Knuckle Brain. There is also an interview with the G-Men who were newly formed at the time. There are also reviews and show listings.

Ductape was a fanzine and a web radio show based in North York.

Marilyn's Vitamins mostly released material on Raw Energy. Their last ep was on Ugly Pop Records. This was originally to be part of a Toronto hardcore series of 7" releases. Like those records they had a limited Drew Barrymore cover for each of the releases. The songs on this ep were:
