Blank Stares studio 3 sessions

Blank Stares are a new band that features some people who have played in other bands and moonlight in some other bands. Taras was the drummer in Riot99 and City Sweethearts and was the person who set up this session. Tara is originally from Edmonton and played in a well known band called The Glory Stompers before moving to Toronto. Well it turns out that the keyboard player, Andrew, is originally from Edmonton but they only found out in the interview afterwards. Andrew also plays in Century Palms and brings a real new wave element to the sound. The band's ring leader, Travis, played in Terminal Licks and had guest-hosted a tribute show to Vassil who he played in Terminal Licks with. Vassil played in City Sweethearts so Vassil seems to be a common denominator between Taras and Travis. Mikey is the bass player who plays in First Base and runs Hosehead Records. Mikey shares a love for the Undertones with Travis and all these little things are what helps build the chemistry among the players and makes this band work.

It was Travis's birthday so the band held a little surprise celebration.

Vassil Mester, who has been on the show twice (once with City Sweethearts and once with Absolut), passed away on Wednesday April 1st. His band mate, Travis, from Terminal Licks programmed the first hour of bands with Vassil and bands he liked. We mixed in some interview clips with Vassil talking about bands he was in and his influences. Exclaim has a memorial write up on him and there is a memorial fund you can contribute to.

Teenage Head are playing their 40th anniversary show as a band on Saturday at the Phoenix. We pulled together a set of the artists making up this bill which will be backed by Sid`s Kids. We played a song from Teenage Head's performance at Heatwave becuase I was just reading a book about John Brower's experience with organizing Canada's first punk festival.

This week Canada has declared war on ISIS and will begin air strikes in Syria. Day 6 debated the declaration that this a moral war. The Sunday Edition breaks down the bigger picture of the politics of fear behind the war. City Sweethearts "I'm a Mess" ep

This is a weird colloboration of ex-members making some great sounding bubblegum lo fi garage punk. The band features the likes of Andy and Taras from Riot 99 who were an amazing traditional UK punk sounding band and they are teaming up with Curtis and Joey from Vicious Cycle who were more of a raging early American hardcore sounding band. Joey doesn't play on this single, but I think he plays on the album. The singer Vassil was in the Young Governors and his lineage is most in line with the style of music they are playing. It is catchy. The title track makes me think of the Dream Dates and their song "The Mess You're In". Musically they remind me more of the Stooges crossed with that garage sound that dominated Wisconsin. A lyric from "Timeless" where Vassil claims "he was born in the wrong decade", is probably true, especially after listening to a sound that does justice to their retro sound. "Can't Stop Shaking" is probably my favourite on this single. It is the fastest song, it is a song about being caught up in a song , and there are these corny back up "whoas" that I love. This is an excellent debut release even if the sound did catch me off guard. They have a saying in soccer with games that have surprising results and that is "That's why you play the game." In City Sweethearts case the saying could be amended to say "that's why you give the disc a spin."
