Radio - Sunday, April 4th, 2021

Back in the summer of 2018, Quatro reached out to see if we would be interested in their book on the Clash. The Clash were one of my gateway bands into punk so I responded. A few days later this beautiful hard cover book on the Clash showed up and I started leafing through it. Beautiful photos. So then I set out to start reading it. But I was so into the subject matter that I wanted to read everything and not just the skim reading that most of us have resorted to in a social media era. A year later, Nick Smash was releasing his book on the Clash in Toronto so I thought it would be a good way to reach out to the author, Martin Popoff. He agreed and we met at the Rivoli. At the event I asked Martin if he would be interested in doing an interview and the book had already sold out so he thought it would be misleading to talk about a book that people couldn't get. A year later I thought, this book is so good and people should know that an author from Toronto wrote it and so I reached out again. He agreed after some convincing. So a few weeks back I spoke with Martin with a list of questions that I wrote up over the year of reading his book. I was lucky to get to ask them. DIRECT ACTION were one of the most important hardcore bands to come out of Toronto. They inspired almost everybody in that early scene. Everyone we spoke to had a story about DIRECT ACTION. People talked about how loud they were, how heavy they were and how righteous they were from a political standpoint. They encompassed everything from sound to lyrics to looks. They were everything. DIRECT ACTION were Toronto's answer to DISCHARGE except they wrote songs that expressed themselves in songs longer than a haiku. DIRECT ACTION released a demo and an LP. Their tape was booted after they broke up and has been officially released by Schizophrenic Records. We spoke to Dave, Buzz and Mike (Three guys on the right in the picture above) three years back for the making of the book, "Tomorrow is Too Late". Radio - Sunday, November 18th, 2018

This week was our bi-annual fundraising show. Thanks to everyone who pitched in with coming in to the station, answering phone, donating prizes and donating cash to CIUT. You can still donate on-line and thanks to so many who have been doing that after the fact through www.ciut.fm. We start out the last few drives with a game of name that tune of punk bands doing ska-ish covers. James St. Bass knew it and stayed mum, but James Brown got stumped again. Download the show here or listen on the player above.

HUDSON MACK – So Lonely

So the next song is for Steve Kurzell who passed away last week. Steve Milo from Sudden Impact wrote us about Steve's passing and asked for us to play "Guns and Children" because the song sticks in your head and is super relevant with the gun climate in the U.S. Sadly still relevant.
