Tonight we are celebrating 50 Years of CanCon and it’s influence on punk. On January 18th, 1971, Canadian Content became a part of the Broadcast Act and was implemented through minimum percentages of hourly Canadian airplay. You might have heard us use the term Can Con. It is a short form for Canadian Content. Like other countries in the world Canada became concerned about championing our own culture. In the 60s radio airplay was dominated by British and American acts. So on January 18th, 1971, Canadian Content requirements were added to the Broadcast Act. Radio stations were required to program somewhere between 25% which has now been increased to 40% of programming by Canadian artists. In Scandinavian countries their content requirements are higher to help preserve their culture with good success. And the same is true here. You can download this show here.

Every six months we host an on-air fundraising drive. In our training, the Station Manager thought a pass off between EXD and the Prophesy was impossible so I tried to prove him wrong with out little game of name that tune which gets played every week between us off air. But this week it was my turn because the Prophesy aren't as well versed in the finer areas of punk. So I tried with covers of Kool and the Gang and the Specials at the begining of the show to disasterous effect. Listen on....
BIG BOYS - Hollywood Swingin’ (Touch 'n Go)
SNUFF – Do Nothing (Workers Playtime)
SCREECHING WEASEL – I can see clearly (Lookout)

Every couple of weeks we record bands in our broadcast studio (known as studio 3). Candy has really been involved in the video side of recording these bands and so much work goes into those that I wanted her to come on air and tell you some of what she gets up to with these sessions. I also had her program some material from these sessions.....
TEENAGE HEAD – Disgusteen (CIUT)

Artificial Dissemination studio 3 session
The band features Shawna Heist who you may know as the guitarist of Sluts on 45 and has played in so many punk bands in Toronto over the last few decades.
On drums is Jamie Problem, who was the singer and guitarist in the legendary Problem Children, but has more recently become the singer for the Rezentments. In my run ins with these bands I have known both folks to be movers and shakers so there personality types are in sync. In the year that they have been together they have written a load of songs that we got to record tonight. The session was engineered by Ian Wilkinson. as usual, on equipment that is falling apart. He makes it sound good as did the band. The songs recorded are:
1. Blow Up
2. I like you better when you were dead
3. Dirty Glass
4. Implant
5. Don't Care
6. GMO
7. The paparazzi stole my soul
8. Hated
9. Fight
10. Up Yers
11. She's got my fuckin' guitar
12. Hidden charms (Willie Dixon cover)
The band also recorded some IDs for the show and the station.
Aldo video taped the whole thing.
Lenora and Mike videotaped the interview afterwards.
The band has an ep out called "Glare" which you can hear at Reverb Nation.

The Rezentments - Studio 3 session
Ian Wilkinson, from Big Brother, was doing sound again and was waiting when we finally luged up the equipment. I should have taken a picture of Chris Crash's amp. It had an amazing leopard print which reminded me of the best punk dye job I envyed growing up. Maybe Chris did too. It was awesome looking.
Jamie Problem had wet my appetite about his new band (The Rezentments) when he came in to be interviewed about Problem Children. And as he belted out songs I could hear some of the PC melodies and optimism in a shitty story. All lived experiences.
Chris had played in a band called the Hammer Boys with Ham'r Mark and they seem to be the core of the band. Mark brought in Mayhem Mark and you can hear the story as better told in this interview we did afterwards. The song "Anxiety" reminded me of "What we want is free" by Articles of Faith. The gang vocals remind me of Sham 69. There are metal flourishes throughout and the song "Dick" approached grind speeds. The band makes the case that they are a mixed bag of influences. The band is working on a studio recording, but here are some songs recorded at CIUT's studio 3.
1. Anxiety
2. Somedays
3. Friendly Fire
4. Hey Pig
5. Piece of Me
6. Photo Bomb
7. You Got Two
8. Crowd Control
9. Barton Street Hag
10. Yer What's Wrong
11. Dick
12. Try
The band also did some IDs for the show and the station based around their songs.
13. EXD ID
14. CIUT ID
And Aldo from Punks 'n Rockers video taped the session.
