Stormtrooper were a punk band from the Isle of Wight, They were active in 1975 and 1978. Bob Muck arranged for us to speak with Nigel and Jeff from Stormtrooper about their upcoming show in Toronto. Tonight we are celebrating 50 Years of CanCon and it’s influence on punk. On January 18th, 1971, Canadian Content became a part of the Broadcast Act and was implemented through minimum percentages of hourly Canadian airplay. You might have heard us use the term Can Con. It is a short form for Canadian Content. Like other countries in the world Canada became concerned about championing our own culture. In the 60s radio airplay was dominated by British and American acts. So on January 18th, 1971, Canadian Content requirements were added to the Broadcast Act. Radio stations were required to program somewhere between 25% which has now been increased to 40% of programming by Canadian artists. In Scandinavian countries their content requirements are higher to help preserve their culture with good success. And the same is true here. You can download this show here.

Still Thinking was initially a zine that published three issues and then became a label that put out two releases. And although that doesn't sound like much there was a lot of unique things about this zine and label. The zine was the combined efforts of some regular and one off contributors which evolved around these kids who went to the same high school in Port Credit. I interviewed Shawn Chirrey (Tomorrow is Too Late) and Vik Adhopia (CBC radio reporter) who were two of the main contributors about the issues and the interviews that appeared in them. Vik worked at the school's yearbook and brought his early journalism and layout skills to the zine. And Shawn had a familial hook up to a printer and the zine was a four page saddlle stiched booklet that made the zine looked pretty professional. The zine stood out not only for their looks but for their coverage which was a mix of hardcore, industrial, metal, and other sounds that made up the alternative scene at the time. Then we talk about the label departure which started out with a local compilation that doubled as a benefit for Nicaragua. And finally the North American licensing of the Heresy "Face Up To It" LP that was not exclusive and basically sunk the label. A music playlist gets developed around our conversations that was not what I expected. Here is their story.

Tonight's show was in honour of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. To commemorate this day we pulled together a show of women in punk bands and we noticed that there were some strong feminist ideas by punk bands, there was some bands with women in the band, and there were some all women band. The B-GIRLs are a super important part of Toronto’s punk history. They were the first all girl band from Toronto, they remained independent keeping their own values with some rules that countered the sexist practices within the music scene at the time, and they wrote some of the best hits that came out of this scene. They were one of the first bands to leave Toronto and make it in New York. They toured with the CLASH. They got released on a label outside of Toronto (Bomp). At the end of 2017, the B-GIRLS released their old material on an LP called “Bad Not Evil” and they played a show in Toronto. We got to speak with Lucasta Ross and Cynthia Ross (not related although that is debatable) when the B-Girls played last year. This is part 1 of the interview we did back in December. There is a great interview in the March 2018 issue of MRR about ISS, who are from North Carolina. Daniel from Sorry State is releasing an ep by them and took the time to get into their heads about their cut and paste approach of making music with a sampler. Using hip hop approaches to song making the band has applied this to punk and as a result you get song titles that sound like in-jokes. It’s a new application of song writing methodology and a cassette has been released called “Endless Pussyfooting” so we featured this on tonight’s show. Mary Tyler Moore passed away this past week. Although she’s not a punk she did represent a modern independent woman in the work world. The show took place in Minneapolis and Husker Du covered the theme song on their “Makes No Sense At All” ep in the mid-80’s. The song was like an unofficial anthem for Minneapolis, which is why it was so appropriate for a band from them to cover the song. With all the tributes to Mary Tyler Moore this week I found myself thinking about this cover.

This coming Sunday at the Garrison is a benefit for Freddie Pompeii, a guy we are trying to keep alive. Freddie has been diagnosed with cancer and we all know that medical bills are more expensive in the States. So a bunch of his friends who make up the first wave of the Toronto punk scene are getting together to play a show and we are going to start off with a few of them, starting off with Freddie’s first punk band the VILETONES. In fundraising tradition we start off by playing name that tune with DJ Brown from the Prophesy as he used to be a ska DJ prior to becoming a junglist. SHEXD is one of the most popular segments on the show, so we start out by paying tribute to the multiple nuggets of programming they are involved in that have spun off into other things on the show and for that we are grateful. Last week we played a new band from Vancouver called VILEINS featuring Shawn Lovblom, who used to sing in the Reprobates. We don’t often get listener feedback so I thought I would share what he wrote. “Thanks for the airtime, I'm loving the soviet theme you've been doing, I've been really getting into a Russian band called Knho, with Victor Tsoi. not exactly hard stuff but I do like it. Anyways, I'm stuck working many hours for a couple more weeks, then I can catch up on all the good programming from you. Thanks for all you do.” That was nice to hear.

Also last week we heard from a Jose who did translation for us with Arrabio and Adictox from Cuba and is also a listener of the show. He wrote to thank us for the feature we did on Colombia. He started messaging with the singer from Secta Suicida who knew the bands and said it was a solid playlist. Then he heard his band being played, which is one of those once in a lifetime moments. We learned of a number of partnerships going on between Montreal and Colombia like Malokio just getting back from touring there and Parasites heading down and doing a slit release with Secta Suicida. These partnerships seem unique to the punk scene. Jose is originally from Mexico and he agreed to put together a show on Mexico, which we have started planning. That will air in the next few months. The research has begun. In the meantime here are a few early punk bands from Mexico

The live studio 3 sessions are such a big component to the show. Shawna has been in with Arson on January 5th, 2011, Sluts on 45 on September 17th, 2013 and Artificial Dissemination on June 3rd,2015. And Jamie has been in with the Rezentments on January 21st, 2014, and with Artificial Dissemination on June 3rd, 2014. I asked both about their experiences with the sessions.

Vassil Mester, who has been on the show twice (once with City Sweethearts and once with Absolut), passed away on Wednesday April 1st. His band mate, Travis, from Terminal Licks programmed the first hour of bands with Vassil and bands he liked. We mixed in some interview clips with Vassil talking about bands he was in and his influences. Exclaim has a memorial write up on him and there is a memorial fund you can contribute to.

Teenage Head are playing their 40th anniversary show as a band on Saturday at the Phoenix. We pulled together a set of the artists making up this bill which will be backed by Sid`s Kids. We played a song from Teenage Head's performance at Heatwave becuase I was just reading a book about John Brower's experience with organizing Canada's first punk festival.

This week Canada has declared war on ISIS and will begin air strikes in Syria. Day 6 debated the declaration that this a moral war. The Sunday Edition breaks down the bigger picture of the politics of fear behind the war. These were some os the opinions I was hearing this week that lead me to program a set about war and Harper`s culture of fear.
