This is episode 1363 of EXD and was put together by Andre Zadorozny, Bee Traverse, Christian Overall, Rob Ferraz, and Stephen Perry. As always N.O.T.A.F.L.O.F. (No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds) and there is a never a cover to hear this show, but we are passing the hat and asking you to support CIUT so we can continue to do what we do. What does the money go for? Last campaign’s money went to fix the transmitter. We had many issues over the year and now the transmitter is fixed and the broadcast can be heard without issue. The next capital projects are to: 

• Upgrade a 16 Year old broadcast board, and

Rock Against Racism

In 1976 Rock Against Racism was founded in response to rising racist attacks in the UK. The far-right national front had become the fourth largest party in Britain. The catalyst was a series of racist statements made by Eric Clapton in August of 1976. The anti-fascist campaign fought the national front with mass action to take public platforms out of the hands of the party. The fest aimed to unite people through music. As one of their slogans stated “Reggae, Soul, Rock n Roll, Jazz, Funk and Punk” artists were going to come together in defiance of racism. That being said, the fest is widely known for reggae and punk bands playing alongside one another. This is one of the ways reggae influenced punk and the emerging 2 tone ska scene. The original movement spanned from 1976 to 1982 and helped spawn like minded collectives and concerts internationally in the following years. It was also the topic of Bob Marley’s “Punky Reggae Party”. Tonight we’ll hear a set from some of the punk bands that participated.

Tonight's show is guest hosted by longtime punk DJ Chris Iler, who co-hosted Fast 'n Bulbous (CHRY), Imperfection Hours (CFRC) and did a label called "Fans of Bad Productions". Chris had the idea to do a label profile on Supreme Echo, this great label in Victoria doing some incredible archival work starting out with a Polish compilation called "Victim of a Safety Pin". Jason Flower, of MPA is the person behind this label and some other great projects that started out as a tape label known as Break Even. Chris and I talk glowingly about Jason and his many projects. MRR Feature - Supreme Echo Records

This is a feature article on my good friend Jason Flower. I know Jason as the singer from Mexican Power Authority which is a band from Victoria that I released a collection of their first three releases on. The travels that Jason talks about in this article took place after MPA went on hiatus and Third World Planet had broken up. Think of Jason as Canada's answer to Luk Haas. Jason came back and released the "Victim of a Safety Pin" compilation, the Jerk Ward 12", the "All Your Ears Can Hear" compilation and a few other releases mentioned herein and it sounds like he has a few things still in the cooker. You can read more about this piece in the November issue of MRR.

In preparing for the fundraising show I spent a lot of time thinking about the relationship that punk has with radio. I was thinking back to the trouble that the Sex Pistols had to endure when “God Save the Queen” came out and I had caught wind that the same single is going to be re-issued this year given the Diamond Jubilee for the coronation because the first time around the single was banned. I remembered that the “Some Product” release had some of those hostile clips and when I listened to them I remembered why punk bands wrote so poorly about the radio. I thought back to the TV interview that a young Hana Gartner did with Steve Leckie of the Viletones. This was before the days when she became a respected journalist for CBC’s “Fifth Estate”. She reflected the same generation gap exposed witnessed in the Sex Pistols interview with Bill Grundy. She was ignorant and unprepared and deflected all negative attention. This was the first real sign that the CBC was going to badger or ignore the punk scene in Canada. Thirty years on and nothing has changed. The CBC continues to ignore the big punk stories in their own backyard and treat it like it doesn’t exist. It infuriates me how they rely on overexposed cultural territory while claiming to be the public broadcaster. Does Feist or K’naan really need more exposure? It infuriates me how the active punk scenes across the country and I can see why punk bands write so poorly about radio. The only exception are the new wave bands but they (Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson) were always more cozier with the mainstream media than punk ever was. They had a chance of getting airplay so you can’t bite the hand that feeds you. So for fundraising, we wanted to have a look at how lucky we are to have CIUT, with the 14 hours of punk they dedicate to this genre through shows like EXD or Heavy Rebel Rumble or Dementia 13. In fact since the last drive a new show has been added to the roster called “Rock ‘n Roll radio” which is further testament to CIUT getting behind punk rock. Mexican Power Authority "Haiku Gesundheit" CD

This was the third and final release I did on Ragamuffin Soldier Records. This release came out in a CD and a double LP format. The vinyl contained 17 additional songs. This release was a collection of the band's first three releases which were originally released in cassette format. Mexican Power Authority are a band from Victoria that feature Kev Smith of the legendary Neos and Jason Flowers who is the person behind Surpeme Echo that has been doing all these great re-issues. I have heard the band described as a cross between Napalm Death and John Coltraine. They can be genre expending to say the least, but these early three releases contain a lot of the Neos flavour. The first batch of songs are taken from the "More Discipline" cassette, which was recorded in the crypt on October 27, 1991:

The Republic of Freedom Fighters / Render Useless split ep

Both bands were from Victoria, BC. I think this was a self-released split ep between the two bands. The Republic of Freedom Fighters wrote a song called "Year of the Rat" and Render Useless did a song called "This is the second flight of Icarus". Jason Flower from MPA / Break Even records did the recording.

MPA "Strang from Endville" ep

This was a split release between Scratch Records which is a record store in Vancouver and Break Even Records. There was 1,000 pressed.  Clarinet and recorder warning. The songs on here are:
