Radio - Sunday, April 12th, 2020

During this time I have found that I have been a lot more reliant on radio for information and I hope that you have as well. So I thought I would start out with a song about the medium. Dave KW programmed most of this show by compiling a self-isolation playlist that he shared with me. All of tonight's show has themes about these times but most of the songs were written in a pre-covid-19 period with  exception for tonight's demo feature. You can download the show here.

So while all of the bands above had been written in a pre-pandemic period, Real Sickies have written and recorded "Quarantined" during this period of self-isolation. The songs have themes pertinent to our time and present a great snapshot for what it is like living in this period of self-lock up.

Smooth Brain studio 3 session

Smooth Brain are a new band from Cleveland with a more garage influence to their sound. The band has just released their second ep called “One of Them” so much of that was recorded in this session, but it was a year ago in August when their first ep came out which was called “Fleas”. Both eps can be downloaded from the band’s bandcamp (smoothbrain.bandcamp.com/‎) page.

This was the first out of town band to play in studio 3 since we have moved into the Tower Road studio and that has more to do with the limitations on the use of the studio. The old St. George house gave us the flexibility of 24 hour access. And this band warned me ahead of time that they were going to be running late which had me nervous the whole time. And with the construction going on Tower Road I paced back and forth trying to find the band for an hour. But finally they pulled in on Hoskins, I spotted the Ohio licence plate and knocked on the window to introduce myself. I hurried them along as we were already behind the gun on time. Fortunately, Jon Hawkes had set up mics and the space so we were ready to go.

The band knocked out a set of material which involved the following list of songs:

1. One of Them
2. Dum
3. The Freezer
4. Mean Chimp
5. Living Room Cop
6. When I’m With You
7. Pointing At Me / Freaker Party
8. Bone 2 Pick
9. Ramones cover
10. EXD ID
11. CIUT ID

During the set I noticed that the band reminded me a lot of the Vapids. Then I realized that they shared a bass player lead singer format, but this is more coincidental. Nathan is also the band’s principle artist, and by that I mean, he draws a lot of the band’s artwork. He has a Robert Crumb influenced style and is responsible for both ep covers. But you can check out his artwork at http://www.nwardcomics.com/. Nathan’s brother, Jim plays guitar with their friend Mike. And the drummer is Kev who informed me that he used to play guitar in 9 Shocks Terror. That floored me. 9 Shocks is a band I love. The fact that he is playing a different instrument in this band is equally puzzling.

This session was videotaped by Aldo from Punks and Rockers. Below is an edit of some of the songs mentioned above.

We spoke about the band afterwards in an interview.

Radio - Sunday, March 31st, 2013

Thinking about the ridiculousness of Easter and the story it is supposed to represent had me think of the Freeze song "Sacrifice not suicide" and did Cliff Hanger have something when he questioned what the difference was in the song that appeared on the "This is Boston Not L.A." comp. That's why I thought it was a fitting song to start a show on easter Sunday with. What's the difference between the two and should christian behaviour be treated with the same concern that mental illness is treated? You can download the show here.

THE FREEZE - Sacrifice not suicide (Modern Method)

The weather was off today in Toronto and tehre was an Easter Parade and my downer message at the beginning of the show deserved a song like Half Off's. I followed that by a band that took their name from the Half Off song. It must be a good enough song to name your band after them. Damn Broads are an all new girl group and this is their demo and they summed up my feelings on religion better than the traditional peace punk bands that have written on the subject to date. Weekend nachos was inspired by Payson (Purity Control's) story about how great they were at A389 fest. And the Glory Stompers song is about Ralph Klein. He passed away and al the eulogizing is painting the man as larger than life, but "Tory Crimes" tells of a not so glroious period. the artwork on the ep has a picture of Ralph's head that has a perforated line around his neck and goats Klein to "Cut Here" meaning his neck.

Picked On demo

This band kicks the ass live. This demo was recorded in their basement and holy fuck did they tap into a powder keg. The sound on the recording is amazing. Dirty, thrashing drive for the net hardcore. The dual vocals smack you in both ears while a jagged guitar slices at your neck. The demo cover is pretty amazing. A double-sided silk-screened cover glued with toxic rubber cement with a jewel case lining. Amazing disc, fantastic art; makes a holy fuck listening experience. The band features Alain from the BLACK SPOKES on guitar. They play a ripping style of hardcore that is reminiscent of CUT THE SHIT, INFEST, and 9 SHOCKS TERROR. They just broke up but you can contact them at myspace.com/wewerepickedon. The songs on here are:
1. Snakepit 2. Welcome to Gilead 3. Werewolves in the Hedgerows 4. Suicide pact - You Go First 5. BYOFL 6. Sure Constable 7. Compliments to the Psychiatric Industry 8. Thanks for the Memories

Zine - Taint #2.5

This was the last issue of the zine under this name. It came out in the summer of 2001 and was published by Matt Bickle of Slasher Records. This issue is mostly photos and I think that is why it earned the half number. Having said that this issue does feature interviews with Kent McClard of HeartattaCk / ebullition fame, an interview with Manowar, and a column by Paul Pfeiffer of Wadge. The photos include pictures of

-          Dead Nation, Ruination, Limp Wrist, Fast Times, at Chicago Fest.

-          The Locust, Reversal of Man, Bloodpact, 9 Shocks Terror, and Hacksaw at Michigan fest

-          Life`s Halt, What Happens Next, and Gordon Solie Motherfuckers at their last show in Cleveland

The photos are large and remind me of the style that Martin Sorrondeguy applied to the posters that accompanied the “Hysteria” compilation.

Zine - Full Contact 05

Click on the above to download a copy of this issue

Issue 5 of Full Contact Magazine had a couple of pieces that I worked on like the Verbal Assault piece and the 9 Shocks Terror interview. This issue also features interviews on Sick of it All, Ringworm, 100 Demons, Ferret Records, and Seth Enslow.
