Town of Hardcore (Locals only)
I visited Venice Beach and saw “Locals only” spray painted on this part of the surf where locals claimed their own. Greg Benedetto once said to me that one of the purposes of these fest are to showcase local bands. The idea is to convert the city into a town of hardcore for the period that the fest is on. Last week we featured the headliners. Here are some of the locals that the shows are built around. Starting with Friday

Sam Ferrera tribute
I just learned that Sam Ferrera passed. Another giant from the first wave of the Toronto punk scene. Sam was known for many things in the scene. He was the bass player in the Ugly, the Viletones, and his own band Screamin' Sam and the Problems. He would help bands like Tyranna record tracks. He would build stages at the Turning Point and the Shock Theatre. He was a well known sculpture in his own right. He was a general handy man. He was an adopted son. Mickey’s mom referred to him as our Sam. He was generous beyond belief. That’s why this loss is hitting me hard. In this time of reflection I want to revisit the interview we had recorded with Sam and Tony and Rayme from the Ugly that Greg Dick conducted on this show back in July of 2007. I wanted to hear Sam one last time. Here are some excerpts from that interview.
