Demo Feature
The Kidz were a punk band around between 1979 ad 1980 in the Campbelford / Peterborough area. They would play a few shows in the area mostly at a place called the Playpen. Sabastion Bach from Skid Row was from Peterborough and would go to shows there. The Kidz could probably be considered the first punk band from the area writing originals. This is a basement recording re-created last year by Joel Wasson and the guitar player re-creating it. So although this doesn't represent an original recording it gives us an idea of the punk material from the time. This is the band that would develop into Creative Zero.

CBC interviews Kathlen Hanna
Jian Ghomesi of Q interviews Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of Bikini Kill reflecting back on those tthe inspiration that inspired the riot grrrl scene. Kathleen shares how trying the times were, why she started a band, and that the first ep is about to be re-released.
The Groggies studio 3 session
I rode down to the studio. It was a cold night.
As I get to Tower Road I notice a truck with some gear in it. That must be the Groggies truck. I see the Shular brothers putting some money in a parking meter and I warn them not to. This is something I would regret in only a few minutes. We took some gear upstairs and picked up a trolley so we can wheel up the bigger gear. As we come back downstairs there is a campus police ticketing their car. Eric tried to reason with the guy but he had his standard set of answers which just infuriated all of us even more. This university is nothing but a business. It astounds me with how greedy they are for revenue. This university has a poor way of treating out of town guests.

Ian used to sing in a band called the Abrasers. Ian stands very straight and looks disinterested but when prompted has a lot of well thought through opinions. He doesn’t show much by way of emotion. His voice is very throaty and reminds me of early BLITZ. This is odd because when I listened to recorded material his vocals reminded me of the CIRCLE JERKS. Then they played a song called “Loser” and there is a spoken word part that reminded me of Mike Muir when he sings “Institutionalized”.
Keith was wearing a sweet Iron Maiden shirt. Eric is his brother and plays drums that start “Controlling Interest” sound like rapid machine gun fire.

Glenn’s beard has been trimmed since I last saw him at the Sons of Ishmael reunion. It still has a ZZ Top quality to it but not as bad as Tim Freeborn or Brian Taylor. Glenn used to play bass in BSL back in the late 80's and in Phallocracy in the 90's.

The Statics were a punk band that started up in the summer of 1979. They were from Port Credit and played a place called the New Port Hotel. In 2001 Squelchtone and Ugly Pop teamed up to release a single of long forgotten recordings. Over the past few months, the drummer Ross Johnson has been in touch with us and Dean Stilles of the band and the agreed to do an interview. This was recorded a couple of weeks back for tonight's program. Most of the songs have been recovered from original recordings spanning 1979 through to 1981.

The demo feature is Concrete Asylum from Halifax and their demo "City Sick" which you can get from bandcamp. The band features a member from Word on the Street, but Concrete Asylum take influences from the noisey speed merchants of the Mid-80's UK scene in bands like Ripcord or the Electro Hippies. This is great stuff.

Valley Boys demo
The VALLEY BOYS are a new local hardcore band inspired by KBD punk, oi, garage punk, the ANGRY SAMOANS, rock n roll, old American hardcore and old punk. The band is made up of Jimmy Vapid (the VAPIDS) and Jon (BRUTAL KNIGHTS) fame. Jon grew up with the drummer Kalle who is from Cornwall. And the missing link is Matt Hitch who is on guitar and vocals and used to be in the SCHOOL JERKS. The band has just learned that Cut the cord that... Records (http://ctct-records.tumblr.com), out of Munster Germany, will be releasing the demo as a 12”. Cut the Cord that... has released material by NEON PISS, FOREIGN OBJECTS, and VACCINE among others so the VALLEY BOYS are in good company. Look out for P-Trash doing a 7” after that. You can download the demo at http://vboys666.bandcamp.com/album/valley-boys. (e-mail - vboys666@gmail.com).

Sid's Kids are a new punk band from Toronto made up from Cleave Anderson of the Screwed, and Marcel LaFleur and John Sutton of Arson. They have been playing this punk / new wave night at the Painted Lady and galvanizing members of the early Toronto punk scene in the process through their fun theme nights. We got a chance to speak and record the group with some of their collaborators. This group included Zero from Zro4, Mickey Skin from the Curse, Fergus Hambledon of the Basics and a Passing Fancy, Barrie Farrel of the Existers, and Chris Haight of Zoom and the Viletones.
We also played No Mistake in our demo feature. No Mistake are a new hardcore band from San Jose featuroing Mikey Bullshit of Go! on guitar and some other members of In Disgust and Permanent Ruin. There is a great review in the demo section November's issue of MRR with complete contact information or you can check out the bandcamp download at www.nomistake.bandcamp.com.
Have a listen to the show.
