Class Assassins "No Justice" ep

This is the second ep by the Class Assassins, but the first with an intentional release. A new record label with an anti-fascist mission put this out and they are called Insurgence Records. "No Justice, No Peace" is a slogan taken from the anti-racist movement and has been reinterpreted here to threaten class war. Side 2 is a cover of an anti-war song written in the 60's by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter. It was a song I learned in grade school so it had a lasting impact that made it into school choirs. The song has a great message about greed and was covered on Direct Action's "Trapped in a world" LP. I think this is a fitting tribute to the bass player's old band by making it a B Side. The song has legs even today and is relevant in the class consciousness that the Class Assassins are going for. (Insurgence Records)

Zine - EXD, VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2

This was the second issue and came out in November 2001. This issue featured an interview with Scare Tactic who were a band with a short life span. They totally had an early New York sound and featured Jesse who would go on to be one of Career Suicide's drummers and Jonah who would be Career Suicide's guitarist and Fucked Up's drummer. Scare Tactic was the genesis of it all. Theren was also a feature on the Saucy 70's film fest which was a one of film fest put together by Conflict Archives and was paying homage to some of the B movies of the 70's with a sex theme.

No Warning CD

A collection of the band's demo and an ep, that came out earlier on Martyr, with some work done to the production. NO WARNING have slowed their sound from the AS WE ONCE WERE days, sacrificing speed and energy for heavy moshability. I am less inspired to write about this band given some of the grade 2 homophobic comments that have been coming out on their message board as well as at their live shows. On top of this, I have heard about a white power band that these guys have started. Add this to their actions at an AGNOSTIC FRONT show where they singled out this Asian kid who was trying to help their band and you start getting some ugly shit. It's a sad reflection on the scene, where kids have jumped on an old anti PC, backlash for a quick fix at some scene cred. Bigotry, in gest and especially on a serious level, has never been part of a hardcore scene that I have known. It is even more disheartening to me as I have interviewed these kids for MRR, written about their releases, and I have played them on the radio show, to find that they have grown into radical versions of the establishment.

Zine - EXD, VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1

This is the very first issue of the radio zine. It was one of the first interviews we did on the show and it was connected to the band playing live in the basement studio at the station known as Studio 3 because it is CIUT's third studio. The live idea came from an old show on About Town, but was also borrowed from John Peel and the sessions he would record with the early punk scene. Interviews often accompanied the live sessions because if you have the band at the station you might as well talk to them. And I wanted more people to find out about these great bands coming out from our city so the zine was born. They were really supposed to be small newsletters as is reflected in the first few issues. This was has just an interview and a few reviews and some other odds and sods.

Zine - Mosh Yankee #1

Mosh Yankee was a zine put out by Mat Bickle. Matt would go on to sing in a band called Sinkin' Ships and would start up a record label called Slasher Records.

Matt initially had a zine called Taint, but he switched the name to Mosh Yankee. This was his first issue and juding by the interviews this had to come out in the Fall of 2001.

Matt liked to take pictures and he liked to print them large. He used a half 8-1/2" x 11" format but flipped the size on it's side so that it resembled a coffee table style of book. This worked well with the large sized photos.

The zine opens up with some shots of No Justice at Chicago-Fest, which had to have been one of the best sets I have seen in a decade.

A brief piece on Bright Calm Blue. They had a split out and I got the sense they were from Quebec. They played with To Dream of Autumn and there is some full sized shots of them. I believe they were from Oakville.

There is some full page shots of the pit at Pointless Fest when Tragedy was on.

Matt interviews At the Mercy of Inspiration who were from Mississauga. This might be the only interview I have seen of the band. They were a metal-core type of band.

Matt talks to R.A.M.B.O. about Manowar, which seems to be his favourite topic.

Matt does a serious interview with No Time Left (from Buffalo) and Splitting Teeth (from Washington State).

The back page has Al Barile's poem on Straight edge called "The Choice" which originally appeared in Glen Friedman's first photo book.

Zine - Taint #2.5

This was the last issue of the zine under this name. It came out in the summer of 2001 and was published by Matt Bickle of Slasher Records. This issue is mostly photos and I think that is why it earned the half number. Having said that this issue does feature interviews with Kent McClard of HeartattaCk / ebullition fame, an interview with Manowar, and a column by Paul Pfeiffer of Wadge. The photos include pictures of

-          Dead Nation, Ruination, Limp Wrist, Fast Times, at Chicago Fest.

-          The Locust, Reversal of Man, Bloodpact, 9 Shocks Terror, and Hacksaw at Michigan fest

-          Life`s Halt, What Happens Next, and Gordon Solie Motherfuckers at their last show in Cleveland

The photos are large and remind me of the style that Martin Sorrondeguy applied to the posters that accompanied the “Hysteria” compilation.

MRR Interview - Ruination

Ruination were a bit of an international super group or certainly a North American super group. The band featured Chris Colohon from the Swarm/Cursed fame and Mike Haliechuk who went on to play in Fucked Up. The band also featured Andy Dempsz of Bloodpact/Earthmover fame and Ebro of Charles Bronson/Los Crudos fame. That's a lot of fame. This interview was conducted at a Tragedy show on December 19, 2000 and was printed in the May 2001 issue of MRR. Unfortunately this issue is not avilable as a back order but you can read the Ruination interview by clicking on the cover.

MRR Interview - Propagandhi

Propagandhi are a long time hardcore band from Winnipeg. They were very melodic and political. Mike McSchlitzed interviewed the band in Philadelphia back in 2000 and the interview appeared in the May 2001 issue of MRR. The back issues of this are sold out but click on the image above and you get a PDF of the interview.

This LP was a collection of the 7", demos from 1979 and some material from the live reunion show in 1995. The songs on this release are:

The band was a 5-piece at the time with Andrew McColl on bass, and Hunter and Scott Belton both playing guitar. Scott Belton left the band before the disc was released, and Andrew shortly after. The Statics "Original 1980 Punk Rock Recordings" ep

Glenn Salter found out about this band through a compilation that he came across at a flea market for Mississauga compilation called "Mississauga Live". Glenn tracked down the band and did an interview with various band members to find out the band's story which is an insert that coems with this single. Glenn approached Simon Harvey of Ugly Pop about  working together on this single and it comes out in April 2001 pressing 800 copies. It's a great little find especially given that the Statics were the only punk band on the comp.
The songs for this ep come from that comp. The recording was a live off the floor from the Newport Hotel, which was a place that bands from Mississauga played at.

I have heard from people that the song "Rebel Like Me" is the stand out on the single. It is the most punk sounding number of the three.

"Mr. Bill" is about the SNL plastiscene character that would get crushed in the end. the guitar sound is probably inspired by the band's love for Teenage Head although others have compared it to Chuck Berry.
The B-Side track "The Story" is an autobiographical story about the band. We do learn from the insert that the band had 10 originals, but I am not sure how many more were recorded.

Regardless, this was a great little archeoligical unearthing.

MRR Inerview - Deranged Record

I did a record profile on Deranged Records when the label was first starting out. Gord and I were roomates at the time and we helped each other out on all sorts of projects related to the scene. I thought his label was doing great things and continues to this day. That's a sign of a good label. Issue #215 of MRR is still available at http://maximumrocknroll.com/back-issues/ but you can download a PDF of the interview with Deranged by clicking on the image above.

MRR Interview - Nomeansno

There was some kind of ban on Nomeansno that went back to Tim's fight with Jello. Nomeansno were on Alternative Tentacles which was Jello's label so as a consequence MRR has never doen an interview with the band. And Nomeasno have done loads so it seems weird. This interview isn't an in depth one but it does capture the band at a period of time. the interview was done in Chicago at the Fireside Bowl and appeared in the April 2001 edition of MRR (#215). This issue of the zine is still available at http://maximumrocknroll.com/back-issues/, but you can get the interview in a PDF format by clicking on the zine cover above.

Victorian Pork CD

VICTORIAN PORK were originally a fuck band from Vancouver. Fuck bands were impromptu bands put together by folks in the Vancouver scene so that they would have bands to fill out the bill. They weren’t meant to be taken seriously and they weren’t supposed to have much of a life outside of one or two gigs. This particular fuck band bucked the trend. Started in 1977 they had Joey Shithead playing drums, Dimwit playing bass, Brad Kent who played in the SKULLS and a host of others. Like every good fuck band the line up evolved with Tony Bardach taking over bass duties. who would go on to play in the POINTED STICKS. There are some great photos of the original VICTORIAN PORK on Scott Beadle’s myspace site at http://www.myspace.com/sbeadle. There was a song that got released on a bootleg of the original band. The band had a life span of about four months by the band’s own admission. In 1999, Tony’s daughter Alexa was on Nardwuar’s radio show playing stuff from Tony’s collection and Brad Kent heard the program. Brad contacted Tony and they got Alexa to sing and voila VICTORIAN PORK have reformed. This is a full length of material which really sounds like DOA / SUBHUMANS material with Penelope Houston of the AVENGERS fronting them. The song “Bad” sounds remarkably like DOA’s RCMP. I guess it makes sense given the band’s origins. Good luck tracking this down because it is a DIY release and I don’t think they are playing out any more. But I did find this website on them at http://www.troopertribute.com/vicpork.htm with a rolling script for the band history a la Star Wars. The songs on here are:

1. Do What I Feel
2. Miller Time
3. Bad
4. I just wanna Beer
5. Pretty Girls
6. Buzzcocks
7. Wanna Do
8. Hey Hey
9. Don't Want
10. You Know
11. Nike Stole my Smoke
12. Nite cafe
13. Silence

Various Artists "Killed by Hardcore" LP

This was a new series of bootlegs that focused on the early hardcore scene. This series didn't take off like the Killed by Death series did, but there were a couple. This was the first and it contained a trackin by Montreal's Genetic Control.
