This is a photo of School Jerks at the Buzz Garage on Cecil Street back in November 26th, 2010. The line up featured Naughty Girls, School Jerks, Total Trash, and Skunx. The photo was taken by Victoria Czerniawska , who is an artist and photographer that has documented the Toronto punk scene and did a tribute to S.H.I.B.G.B.’s. You can see some of Victoria’s work at https://victoriaczerniawska.tumblr.com/. This is part of a puzzle fundraiser to support Toronto’s only campus/community radio station CIUT 89.5 FM. Radio - Sunday, July 22nd, 2018
Tonight's show features a mixed bag of punk with some themed sets based around subject matter. There is a set on Sex Ed curriculum featuring local band's on the topic which always surprises me how forward thinking the punk scene is. And there is a set that is pro-immigration punk songs. And a new band from Barrie bis our demo feature which is a band called Heavy Petter. Download the show here.
FLASH HOUSE - No Solution (Self-Released)
A Sex Ed Curriculum was introduced into the Ontario education system with the last government and the new conservative government is scrapping it kicking off a series of protests in various ways. But in looking back at some of the bands that have been on the show they have been writing about how the sex ed curriculum has a little short sighted specifically VCR. So I put together a set of punk from Toronto of bands addressing issues around sex, sexuality and gender issues. Just to add another voice to the debate and protests.

FLQ studio 3 session
The FLQs started out as a Viletones cover band. FLQ comes from a reference in the song "Rebel". The band featured a different line up that included Ivan from School Jerks and Todd from Bad Skin. As the line up changed so did the song writing and the FLQs became FLQ and started writing their own songs. The band currently features Luke on vocals, Erik (from Hassler) on guitar, Jeff on bass, and Brice on drums. FLQ has recorded a few times and you can find these recordings up at their bandcamp page including a couple of songs from this session. Ian Wilkinson recorded the following songs:
1. Perverse
2. Untitled
3. Bleed Out
4. Rat
5. Conditions
6. Turn It
The band also did some IDs for us:
CIUT ID
EXD ID
and we spoke after the session where Luke explained the songs and the band talked about shows and a tour they did last year.

Last night we showed up to the station and access to the building was restricted because of the Pan Am games. it made me think of the opening song because you say hi to welcome the international athletes but the joke is on the domestic population because you have to pay for it and put up with the circus of the games. The field hockey pitch is restricted by high fences and circus like tents. Download last night's show here.

Every six months we host an on-air fundraising drive. In our training, the Station Manager thought a pass off between EXD and the Prophesy was impossible so I tried to prove him wrong with out little game of name that tune which gets played every week between us off air. But this week it was my turn because the Prophesy aren't as well versed in the finer areas of punk. So I tried with covers of Kool and the Gang and the Specials at the begining of the show to disasterous effect. Listen on....

I also had her program some material from these sessions.....

Zine - EXD - Volume 15, Issue 1
It has been a while since a radio zine has come out. The new features an interview with the School Jerks that tries to sum up their history to here. We talk about all sorts of things but mostly about the new LP. The interview was an attempt to look at the band to date and was initially prepared for MRR, but that never materialised. You can download a PDF of the zine here.

Farang studio 3 session
But how I know three of these folks is through their other bands. I knew Matt through former host Dave Brown who played with him in Capital Death which was a band from Truro that Matt and Payson both played in. More recently Matt (the Endless Blockade) and Payson (Purity Control) sang in bands from here, but Farang sees these guys returning to the instruments that they played in Capital Death.
I know Ivan from his bands Terminal State and School Jerks and more recently Kremlin. Ivan also co-hosted the show for a few months so I feel like he is part of the EXD family. Ivan e-mailed me about getting Farang to play on the show when Matt came back from New York City at the end of the summer. I had to re-schedule this session at least once but eventually we were able to set this up.
Ivan described the sound like starting with a Mob 47 riff and working on not repeating any rhythm in a creative inventive post punk way. Ivan continues by explaining that it took a long time for Farang to develop their sound and in part because the member's were getting familiar with each other. They never had any conversations on influences with regards to bands or sounds.
People have compared Farang to Devo and Dead Kennedys,
"Ear of the Bull" reminds me of Black Flag's "My War" given the prominent bass structure and the crazy guitar pieces. There is a lot of early Minutemen in there which has more to do with the jazz like structure. I wonder if this is an SST mash up but the band denies anything that directed. Bob Mould even creeps in there with some of the speed at which Payson plays.
But despite all of these I have to say I have never heard of anything like Farang having them defy description.Regardless I couldn't help myself trying to keep pace with the songs in a way that just sucked me in.
We were able to record songs from the band's past two releases. They were:
1. Constrictor
2. Woggle
3. Ear of the Bull / If you're not now you never were
4. If you're not now you never were
5. Jampacking
6. Gumboots / Maximum Taxiderm / Let's Kill
7. Psychic Bruise
Then I bugged the band to do some IDs
8. Psychic Bruise EXD ID
9. Farang on CIUT ID
We also spoke with the band afterwards in the hallway. The production studio was broken so Ian set up some mics.
This session was recorded and produced by Ian Wilkinson. The video was filmed by Aldo and Candy. Candy did the editing on this clip.
