Tribute to Rosie Davis
Rosie Davis passed away earlier this week and it has had a big impact on our community. I knew her as the singer in OUTCRY, an anarchist band from Halifax that played our show, but I was first introduced to Rosie as a host on SHEXD. In an interview with OUTCRY I would come to understand that she played in many bands and different instruments. Guitar in VIXENS, vocals in OUTCRY, bass in ZYGOME. Many punk scenes are reeling this week because she became members of many of these scenes in Halifax, Toronto, and Montreal. Mostly in Halifax where she was from, but in 2014 she went to school in Toronto and was in this all star band called CONUNDRUM. In 2008 Rosie was in a band called RULE OF THUMB that released a CD titled “Infelicitas” on Rot Records. In 2011 she played guitar in VIXENS an all women hardcore band with a tape and a 12” that came out on La Vida Es Un Mus. We are going to start a set of music featuring bands that Rosie Davis was in with VIXENS and a song called “Broken Scenes”.

VIXENS - Broken Scenes (La Vida Es Un Mus)
ABJECT PAX - Ratzinger (Self-Released)
CONUNDRUM - Confined (Self-Released)
OUTCRY interview explaining “Chatter”
OUTCRY - Chatter (CIUT)
IMBOLIX - No Spring (Self-Released)
ZYGOME - Mental Murder (Self-Released)

Rosie played bass and sang in ZYGOME. This came from a demo that came out in 2018. She played guitar in Abject Pax. The band released a demo in 2012 and an ep on Sewercide in 2013. Ratzinger appeared on both. We heard the demo version. Rosie lived in Toronto in 2014 and played in a band called CONUNDRUM that featured members of Weak Link, Mighty Atom, Vixens, New Armour, Abject Pax, Concrete Asylum, and Severe. OUTCRY were an anarcho punk band around between 2016 and 2017. After much follow up we were able to record them in the hallway at the station and here is a song from that. IMBOLIX were an all women punk band from Halifax in 2017. SHEXD will be doing a show in August where they will pay a greater tribute to Rosie by dedicating the show to her. Rosie had an impact on many people and will be missed. If you are able to contribute to a gofundme campaign called Rosie Forever to pay for a memorial tribute for Rosie.

THE GO-GO’S - The Whole World Lost Its Head (Sire)
NIGHT BIRDS - Roll Credits (Fat Wreck Chords)
AGAINST ME! - Trash Unreal (Sire)

2 MINUTE MINOR - Hard Times (Zap)

Up Next is a brand new archival release of the first punk band from Bulgaria called the NEW FLOWERS. This release is called “Cold War Collection” and compiles material recorded by the band between 1979 and 1995. Puke ‘n Vomit is the label that did all the hard work.

НОВИ ЦВЕТЯ (NOVY TSVETYA) - Revolting Grief (Гнусната Печал) (Puke 'n Vomit)
LARRY WILLIS - Police Car (Stiff)
BIZARROS - Nova (Gorilla / Clone)

The CHILD MOLESTERS best known for the song “Hillside Strangler”, have a collection called “Hound Dog Recordings and we heard a song from that called “I’m Gonna Punk You (in the Face). We started off with NEW FLOWERS from Bulgaria and we heard the song “Revolting grief” Again the first punk band from Bulgaria released on Puke n’ Vomit Records. After that we heard “Police Car” by Larry Willis. This song originally appeared as an ep from 1977 and a live version came out on a Stiff compilation a year later. The BIZARROS were next with a recording from 1976 called “Lady Doubounette”. The BIZARROS were from Akron along with so many other bands and they had a STOOGES and Velvet Underground feel to their sound. We heard a song called “Nova”. That was followed up by the STINKY TOYS from Paris and we heard the song “Plastic Faces”. It was released on a self titled LP in 1977. Up next is a Peel Sessions recording of "Nobody's Hero" by Stiff Little Fingers.

Brand new. WARWOUND are a reformed band from Birmingham that started out originally in 1982. THe re-boot started back five years ago with Ian Glasper on bass. He has written all these wonderful books on decades of punk in the UK. This is a song called “The Age of the Racist” and is off a new release called “WWWIII”. That was followed up by another new band with deep roots. The band is called Grey C.E.L.L. and they feature members of Citizens Arrest. One of my all time favourite hardcore bands out of NYC. AARMA from Brazil was next with Control Da Massas. They released this album called "Dogmas" earlier this month. I found Cliterarti recently and I just had to play it cuz is sick. This was released on Tankcrimes last year, and is another of the few trans- hardcore punk bands, there should be more like this. The singer Ami Lawless recorded a live studio 3 session with Voetsek in the old CIUT studios on St. George Street. KIRJE KELALTA from Finland were next with "Vapaa Karantenit". This was released earlier this month. Regret from Bristol were next with "Prepare for a fall". And last we heard another band i discovered recently this is actually a solo project by the Afro-Brazilian Bassist, Songwriter and Vocalist, Flora Lucini. A 6- piece electric band with percussion, taking traditional styles of Hardcore-punk and mixing them with Rhythms of the African Diaspora. Flora describes her music as:

THE MEMBERS were an early punk band from the suburbs of Camberley. Early on they pushed the boundaries of punk with their incorporation of reggae and the Pop sensibilities of their label Stiff Records they became a minor hit in places like Australia and the United States with songs like “Working Girl”. They helped set the stage for the ska revival in England even though they won’t admit to any of that, but certainly resurrected Rico Rodriguez’s career. They are playing at the garrison this coming Friday and Saturday and we got to speak to Jean Marie Carroll last week. This is “Solitary Confinement” the band’s first single.

Radio - Sunday, May 5th, 2019

Mayday was a couple of days ago but let's celebrate with this song by Rebels. Download tonight's show here.

REBELS – Mayday (Musk Project)

May 4th has been talked about with the passing of the Chewbacca actor, but my brother reminded me that May 4th was also the day that the National Guard in the United States shot four students at Kent State back in 1970.  So we start the show off with a Sons of Ishmael cover about the incident and then a set of bands from the state.

One of the bands I got to travel with to learn about the Ohio scene was MSI. This next set is a collection of re-issues from the reviews in April's May issue.
