Motherfuckers studio 3 session

This is the second time Motherfuckers has appeared in a studio 3 session. The first was back in 2009 and the "I Wanna Be a Cop So I Can Fuck You Up" ep came out. We had just learned that over the many years of recording live loud bands in the broadcast studio, we had been doing damage to the wiring on the broadcast board. So this was the second time we recorded the session in the hallway outside of the broadcast studio. No sound isolation, everyone in one room and it turned out fine, which is partially because our sound engineer, Ian Wilkinson is a sound engineer and knows how to mic loud instruments so they don't bleed into each other. The band features Dan on vocals, Matt on guitar, Hunter on bass, and Tim on drums (who also moonlights in the Pagans of Northumberland). The Motherfuckers also had to play a set at the Bovine later this night so this wound up being one of the fastest sessions interview included. The songs we recorded were:

1. Punk Rock Group Therapy
2. Designated Drinker
3. We Need More Beer
4. Once a Pig Always a Pig
5. Postal
6. I Wanna Be a Cop So I Can Fuck You Up
7. Relentless
8. Cunter's Keggar
9. Rock 'n' Roll Scumbag
10. Lies (a.k.a. Wizards Fuck Off)
11. Ode #7
12. Ordinary People / Winner's Circle
13. Streets of Distraction (The freeze)
14. Rival Leaders (The Exploited)
14. Motherfuckers CIUT ID
15. Motherfuckers EXD ID

Motherfuckers studio 3 session, 2016

Motherfuckers are a hardcore band from Calgary. They have been through Toronto a few times. We recorded them once before in 2008 back at the old St. George basement studio. The band has been on and off a few times and are back together and have even written a full length last year called "Relentless". They were in town and playing a show later tonight at the Bovine, but they squeezed in this session before the show. Dan, Shawn, and Tim recorded that session. Tim also drums in a band called the Pagans of Northumberland. Dan's other band, Spastic Panthers, have called it quits. But the major change to the Motherfuckers is that their guitarist Jay has left the band and been replaced by Matt.

We recorded the following songs during this session:

1. Punk Rock Group Therapy
2. Designated Drinker
3. We Need More Beer
4. Once a Pig Always a Pig
5. Postal
6. I Wanna Be a Cop So I can Fuck You Up
7. Relentless
8. Cunter's Kegger
9. Rock 'n Roll Scumbag
10. Lies (a.k.a. Wizards Fuck Off)
11. Ode #7
12. Ordinary People
13. Winner's Circle
14. Streets of Distraction (The Freeze)
15. Rival Leaders (The Exploited)
16. EXD ID
17. CIUT ID
18. Interview

Ian Wilkinson recorded this session and is good friends with Motherfuckers. At the last minute we found out that this session had to be recorded in the hallway. Painted walls without any sound insulation making for refracting sound. This was not our best recording and Ian was upset with how it came out. We hope to improve the upcoming sessions.

This session was also captured on video by Punks and Rockers.

Radio - Sunday April 17th, 2016

In fundraising tradition we start off by playing name that tune with DJ Brown from the Prophesy as he used to be a ska DJ prior to becoming a junglist. We look for a ska like cover done by a hardcore or punk band. We chose a recent cover of the Slickers done by DOA. Please donate to CIUT at www.ciut.fm. You can download a copy of the show here

DOA – Johnny Too Bad (Sudden Death)

SHEXD is one of the most popular segments on the show, so we start out by paying tribute to the multiple nuggets of programming they are involved in that have spun off into other things on the show and for that we are grateful. The CURSE because Mickey Skin showed up for the first ever SHEXD, STRANGLED because Zoe tipped us off to this new band from Edmonton, and OUTCRY because the singer was involved in the most recent instalment of SHEXD. That is a small list of contributions. Check out the –SHEXD tag for more of Chloe, Zoe, Sarde, and Marji’s contributions because they are many

THE CURSE - Shoeshine Boy (Hi Fi)
STRANGLED - White Noise (Crude City)
OUTCRY – Chatter (Self-Released)

We often pull together sets of bands love for radio. Here is a set that expresses pun band’s thought on radio starting off with

THE STOOGES – 1969
THE JOLTS – Radio man
THE UGLY – Hell Time (Other Peoples Music)

Last week we played a new band from Vancouver called VILEINS featuring Shawn Lovblom, who used to sing in the Reprobates. We don’t often get listener feedback so I thought I would share what he wrote. “Thanks for the airtime, I'm loving the soviet theme you've been doing, I've been really getting into a Russian band called Knho, with Victor Tsoi. not exactly hard stuff but I do like it. Anyways, I'm stuck working many hours for a couple more weeks, then I can catch up on all the good programming from you. Thanks for all you do.” That was nice to hear.

Also last week we heard from a Jose who did translation for us with Arrabio and Adictox from Cuba and is also a listener of the show. He wrote to thank us for the feature we did on Colombia. He started messaging with the singer from Secta Suicida who knew the bands and said it was a solid playlist. Then he heard his band being played, which is one of those once in a lifetime moments. We learned of a number of partnerships going on between Montreal and Colombia like Malokio just getting back from touring there and Parasites heading down and doing a slit release with Secta Suicida. These partnerships seem unique to the punk scene. Jose is originally from Mexico and he agreed to put together a show on Mexico, which we have started planning. That will air in the next few months. The research has begun. In the meantime here are a few early punk bands from Mexico

DANGEROUS RHYTHM - The Bar (Orfeon Videovox)
SIZE – Strategy (Rock n Roll Circus)
REBEL’D PUNK - Mi Nueva Nación (Discos Cobra)

The live studio 3 sessions are such a big component to the show. Shawna has been in with Arson on January 5th, 2011, Sluts on 45 on September 17th, 2013 and Artificial Dissemination on June 3rd,2015. And Jamie has been in with the Rezentments on January 21st, 2014, and with Artificial Dissemination on June 3rd, 2014. I asked both about their experiences with the sessions.

ARTIFICIAL DISSEMINATION – GMO (CIUT)
KATATONIX – Rip Off (CIUT)

Vince was in on July 10th, 2013 with Make No Gains and more recently with the Katatonix on March 15th, 2016. Vince also talked about what being on CIUT has meant for getting connected with the scene. We played a yet to be aired song b the Katatonix.

LEATHER UPPERS – Supercar (Past It)
RADIO STARS - Dirty Pictures (Chiswick)
LIGHTMARES – Money Woes (Self-Released)
WAYOUTS – No Time (Wayout)

To go out with we rhymed off many things that we have broadcast in the last couple of months which included:

Radio - Sunday, April 10th, 2016

We started off with Grand Malota who are from Panama and we heard the song “La Voz de Los Muertos” and we played them because the Panama papers were easily the most newsworthy story of the week with the revelations of all these rich people hiding their money in tax evasion schemes. We have already seen the Prime Minister of Iceland resign and David Cameron is implicated through his father. There are ten other heads of state in trouble so we will see how this story pans out. Listen to the show on the player above or download an MP3 here.

GRAND MALOTA - La Voz de Los Muertos

NERVOUS TALK – Way To Go (Hosehead)

I was reading an interview in the latest issue of MRR with Ricardo Melendez about the Punk scene in Colombia in an article titled “Bogota Punk” It is the first of a three part series. But in the interview Ricardo writes about some of the early bands and about the bands to follow. COMPLOT were the first self-designated punk band to come out and play. They were from Medellin and they covered the BUZZCOCKS’ song “Love Battery”.

COMPLOT - Love Battery (Bootleg)

A compilation came out in 1988 called “El Cartel del Punk Medallo” which features so many great hardcore bands from Medellin at the time

When asked about who was the most pioneering bands were Ricardo said Morgue and La Pestlilencia so here are songs by each of those bands

LA PESTILENCIA – Fango (Mort Discos)
MORGUE – Dejenme

Morgue were from Bogota and were the long lasting band surviving as a band for 22 years. Their songs were critical and they sang about life in the city. The family tree image on the side come from a blog called Blog Anti and became a huge resource for researching punk in Colombia.

In the mid-90’s a compilation came out by bands from Bogota called “El Bogotazo” which featured four bands on it.

MACHO BOYS - Slam (Decadence) (Self-Released)
RULETA RUSA - Me Dan Asco (Discos MMM)
RADIATION RISK – This and That (Self-Released)

Tonight's demo feature is a new band featuring members of Vacant State, Big Crux and others. Sorry State described the tape as "a band out of the west coast of Canada who play a kind of rock-inflected hardcore punk. Despite some very gruff vocals that remind me of 86 Mentality or Ebro from Punch in the Face, the music is super catchy to the point where you could almost call it garage-punk... I'm old so I'm apt to compare the music to something like Social Circkle or Regulations, but younger people probably have more recent reference points of bands who play a similar style (maybe even Coneheads or Cal and the Calories?). Regardless, the combination of the gruff, tough-sounding (yet still really catchy) vocals and the more overtly melodic music is a real winner and bound to please anyone into either catchy 80s-sounding hardcore or some of catchier bands in the recent oi!-inflected hardcore style."

CHEAP APPEAL – No Work Today (Self-Released)
CHEAP APPEAL – Nothing to Offer (Self-Released)
CHEAP APPEAL – Panic (Self-Released)
CHEAP APPEAL – Sensory Overload (Self-Released)
