Absolut demo

Absolut has been around for a few years as an idea and a different line up that grew out of Saigon Distress Signal. The band has come together more recently in a more permanent line up. Chris on vocals and Vassil on drums were original members. They convinced Joel from Rammer to play guitar and Rich from Action to play bass. They all have been in punk bands, but this group veers in a sound that borrows from some influences which include Anti-Cimex from Sweden, Death Side from Japan, and Disorder from the UK. This is an incredible recording and you can download it from their bandcamp page at http://absolutnoise.bandcamp.com/. Above is the artwork from the demo.

S.H.I.T. Studio 3 session

Winter returned on this night. We were recording this session after a snowstorm so wheeling an amp through snow becomes a thankless task. I had been looking forward to this session for sometime. The six song demo is incredible and I just saw them live opening up for Left for Dead. The singer Ryan sings with a delayed echo that gives a G.I.S.M. meets TERVEET KADET feel. Our sound engineer, Jon Hawkes was able to replicate that effect. This is matched by the sonic dissonance created by Greg's guitar. He does an amazing job of channeling early Gang of Four and Gloom in terms of the noise irritation. Brandon plays in a power violence band called Purity Control and he emphasizes parts of songs with movements to take you through it. And Jose, the singer turned drummer pounds out a primal beat that drives this whole ship. I got them to warm up with some covers to kill time so we are treated to a Couple of Bad Brains songs that the band learned for their Hallowe'en show. And the threw in "A Look at Tomorrow" for good measure. Here are the songs....

1. Pay to Cum
2. Regulator
3. A Look at Tomorrow
4. Mind Fuck / New Song #1
6. Human Kindness

7. Muscle Mag
8. New Song #2
9. Bondage
10. Bendy
11. New Song #3
12. Feeding Time
13. Eraser
14. New Song #4
15. EXD ID
16. CIUT ID

17. Interview

Here is a video of a couple of songs shot by Aldo Erdic of Punks n Rockers. The songs found in this clip are "Mind Fuck", two new songs, "Erasure" and "New Fast" song.

MRR Review - Proxy demo

Another great band from Montreal in their infancy, captured in this capsule review in the latest MRR (#356).

MRR Review - White Wash "Bend" ep

This was reviewed in the January 2013 issue of MRR (#356). Sounds promising.

MRR Reviews - Protestant "Reclamation" 12"

This was reviewed in the January 2013 issue of MRR (#356), the same issue that y the band which is also worth reading. I put this up here because Chaos Rurale is a great label out of Quebec that has also released great bands like Dekoder and the Facials.

MRR Review - Total Trash "Josef K" ep

I don't agree with this review, but it comes from MRR, the January 2013 issue (#356).

MRR Review - Pregnancy Scares "Facelift" ep

Pregnancy Scares from Ottawa get reviewed in the January 2013 issue of MRR (#356). You can get a copy of the single through Deranged Records.

MRR Review - Masters Apprentices "Undecided / Wars or Hands of Time" 45

This Masters Apprentices 45 was reviewed in the January 2013 issue of MRR (#356). This is part of a series of garage rock 45's from Australia being re-issued by Ugly Pop.

MRR Review - The In-Sect "I can see my love / Over under sideways down" 45

This was reviewed in the January 2013 issue of MRR (#356). This is part of an ongoing re-issue series that Ugly Pop has been involved in. The In-Sect is part of the recent focus on garage rock bands from Australia.

MRR Review - Hassler "Asphyxiate" ep

This review appeared in the January 2013 issue of MRR (#356). The very same issue where the zine co-ordinator, Mariam Bastani, wrote "The Hassler Asphyxiate ep is un-ficking-real. The record is stupid good. If you to like hardcore violent, then you should love

this." It's high praise and I happen to agree with her about how great this record is. Write Schizophrenic for it.

MRR Review - Bloody Hells "Why hasn't anyone killed you?" CD

The Bloody Hells are from Calgary. They were reviewed in the January 2013 issue of MRR (#356).

MRR Review - Archagathus split

This split was reviewed in MRR #356, which came out in January 2013.

If in barbed wire things can bloom, why can't I?

Tara Bursey, the fantastic artist who does all the great School Jerks covers, did a full page drawing for the January issue of MRR (#356). She was telling me that this is the first time MRR has offered up a page for punk artist. They have done some things in the past, but hopefully this will become a regular feature. Tara's drawing is based on a famous photo taken by Arthur Fellig who was a photojournalist more commonly known as Weegee, a phonetic interpretation of ouija which was given him for his ability to show up at the scene of a crime within minutes of it being reported. Weegee's subject matter mostly focused on urban life, crime, injury and death found in his native New York City. This drawing is based on a photo known as Their First Murder and the caption is taken from a poem writtne by a child in a concentration camp. Tara has brought the two together to create a piece expressing an inspiring message about building an ideal world and is best expressed on Tara's blog.
