Demo Feature
The Kidz were a punk band around between 1979 ad 1980 in the Campbelford / Peterborough area. They would play a few shows in the area mostly at a place called the Playpen. Sabastion Bach from Skid Row was from Peterborough and would go to shows there. The Kidz could probably be considered the first punk band from the area writing originals. This is a basement recording re-created last year by Joel Wasson and the guitar player re-creating it. So although this doesn't represent an original recording it gives us an idea of the punk material from the time. This is the band that would develop into Creative Zero.

CBC interviews Kathlen Hanna

Jian Ghomesi of Q interviews Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of Bikini Kill reflecting back on those tthe inspiration that inspired the riot grrrl scene. Kathleen shares how trying the times were, why she started a band, and that the first ep is about to be re-released.

The Groggies studio 3 session

I rode down to the studio. It was a cold night.

As I get to Tower Road I notice a truck with some gear in it. That must be the Groggies truck. I see the Shular brothers putting some money in a parking meter and I warn them not to. This is something I would regret in only a few minutes. We took some gear upstairs and picked up a trolley so we can wheel up the bigger gear. As we come back downstairs there is a campus police ticketing their car. Eric tried to reason with the guy but he had his standard set of answers which just infuriated all of us even more. This university is nothing but a business. It astounds me with how greedy they are for revenue. This university has a poor way of treating out of town guests.

Glenn’s beard has been trimmed since I last saw him at the Sons of Ishmael reunion. It still has a ZZ Top quality to it but not as bad as Tim Freeborn or Brian Taylor.  Glenn used to play bass in BSL back in the late 80's and in Phallocracy in the 90's.

Ian used to sing in a band called the Abrasers. Ian stands very straight and looks disinterested but when prompted has a lot of well thought through opinions. He doesn’t show much by way of emotion. His voice is very throaty and reminds me of early BLITZ. This is odd because when I listened to recorded material his vocals reminded me of the CIRCLE JERKS. Then they played a song called “Loser” and there is a spoken word part that reminded me of Mike Muir when he sings “Institutionalized”.

Keith was wearing a sweet Iron Maiden shirt. Eric is his brother and plays drums that start “Controlling Interest” sound like rapid machine gun fire.

This session was recorded and mastered by Jon Hawkes. Aldo Edric videotaped the band for Punks and Rockers. Here is a clip.

Valley Boys demo

The VALLEY BOYS are a new local hardcore band inspired by KBD punk, oi, garage punk, the ANGRY SAMOANS, rock n roll, old American hardcore and old punk.  The band is made up of Jimmy Vapid (the VAPIDS) and Jon (BRUTAL KNIGHTS) fame. Jon grew up with the drummer Kalle who is from Cornwall. And the missing link is Matt Hitch who is on guitar and vocals and used to be in the SCHOOL JERKS. The band has just learned that Cut the cord that...
Records (http://ctct-records.tumblr.com), out of Munster Germany,  will be releasing the demo as a 12”. Cut the Cord that...  has released material by NEON PISS, FOREIGN OBJECTS, and VACCINE among others so the VALLEY BOYS are in good company. Look out for P-Trash doing a 7” after that. Sid's Kids are a new punk band from Toronto made up from Cleave Anderson of the Screwed, and Marcel LaFleur and John Sutton of Arson. Sid's Kids studio 3 session

Sid's Kids are a punk band featuring Cleave Anderson on drums and Marcel laFleur and John Sutton on guitar and bass from Arson. The band is similar to the Screwed in that they focus on early punk classics. This group is a bit of a session band set up to host a punk / new wave night and have involved quite a few players from Toronto's early waves of punk. The band does some covers like the Damned's "Born to Kill" and the Saints "(This) Perect Day". Covers by local artists include:

Mickey Skin singing the Curse's song "Shoeshine Boy",

Chris Haight singing for Zoom and Viletones songs "Sweet Desperation" and "Does She Jump".

Fergus Hambledon sings and plays guitar on A Passing Fancy's "I'm Losing Tonight" and the Basics' "I Can't Help"

Barrie Farrell sings and plays guitar on the Existers "Never Think Big".

There is also an interview done with the group. One of my realizations in doing this interview is that this is a special group of people. The first wave of Toronto punks have remained to be active as a scene which is something I have noticed in other scenes. It is pretty special and continues to impact our scene in many ways. The other thing that needs to be said is that Cleave Anderson is the glue behind so many of these projects and his energy is infectious.

The session was recorded and cleaned up by Jon Hawkes.

Aldo filmed the session and it is amazaing what he was able to catch. Here is a link to the Punks and Rockers youtube channel

Review - Purity Control “Adjusting” ep

PURITY CONTROL is a great new hardcore band from Toronto that live in the power violence arena which is a place I like to dwell. The band features Payson who originally played in this little known band from Truro, Nova Scotia called CAPITAL DEATH. They were incredible and each of the band members have gone on to play in incredible bands (CAREER SUICIDE and the ENDLESS BLOCKADE to name two). Other members in this band moonlight in S.H.I.T. and ABYSS so the talent of this band is nothing to take lightly. They are power houses in their own right and when they get together they make this short sharp bursts of anger reminiscent of CROSSED OUT with the heavy bass driven structures found in PISSED HAPPY CHILDREN. These are cues from the some of the pillars in the power violence scene but the unrelentless speed at which songs like “Dear Life” are played at make you realize that this sound has been brought up to date. In fact, I have heard this described as breakneck bludgeoning music which I tend to think is accurate of the pace and heaviness at which PURITY CONTROL play. This recording was mixed and mastered by Will Killingsworth of ORCHID fame so that is something of note to all you Y2K emo violence followers. And if you like their recordings you really should see them live. (http://puritycontrolhc.bandcamp.com/)

This is the Rembrance day show on Equalizing-X-Distort so we started out with a Sudden Impact song that is taken from the World War memorial statues in Toronto. We started off with a set of songs that look at the subject of war with Crass, Discharge, and DRI. Then the first of two tributes to Not Dead Yet fest with commentary on things that happened at the Negative Approach show on the first night and the power violence show on teh saturday night.
