Hassler "Asphyxiate" ep

Hassler ep HASSLER are a new group from Toronto. They remind me of DOUBLE NEGATIVE in their approach to song writing. They write short songs packed dense with generations of hardcore. It is what a contemporary hardcore band should sound like if they were speaking in tongues about the last three decades of hardcore. The band credits RIPCORD, BGK and a few other noise merchants as their influence despite their despisal of any retro trends. HASSLER is made up of the singer from BAD SKIN, the guitarist from BRUTAL KNIGHTS, the bassist from the REPROBATES, and the drummer from RAMMER. Get it right because I am sick of seeing the crazy lists that are associated with this band which speak to how involved these guys are in the scene. RAMMER brought Al and Jon together and this idea of a band germinated more in a band called KOMMANDO, but they threw everything out when they found Erik and Jay. Any of this previous band history is misleading because HASSLER sounds like none of these bands. They also sound like nothing I have heard before. This recording is blown out and the over modulation serves to suggest that these guys are just kicking it out regardless of any consequences. I have heard their production described as raw-fi which gets close. But the enthusiasm of MRR’s editor captures what I feel about this band after seeing them live. She said about this ep that it is “un-fucking-real. The record is stupid good. If you ever claimed or claim to like hardcore in its most violent, purest forms, then you should love this." I wholeheartedly agree with her. They don’t give a shit about hype. This will make them the best band that you don’t know about. I am telling you to pay attention. I also think that something should be said about the artwork. Adam Kindred from CONCRETE ASYLUM / ABJECT PAX did the cover artwork. Adan has done covers for other bands like TRUNCHEONS. This particular piece channels RUDIMENTARY PENI meets DYS’ “Brotherhood” drawing. Just a gnarly rough street alley scene with characters like a pregnant girl smoking and a personified rat in leathers, which may sound cliché and comedic but sets the tone for a wild party. Everything about this release is great. (Schizophrenic Records – 17 W 4th Street / Hamilton, ON / L9C 3M2 / Canada / www. schizophrenicrex.com)

The songs found on this ep are:

1. Asphyxiate
2. Nothing for Nothing
3. Beatdown

4. Pigpen
5. Enlightened
6. Innocent

There were 100 with a limited cover, which is the scan you see to the right of this.

Pick Your Side studio 3 session

September 11th has taken on significant meaning and is one of the reasons for why we were able to record Pick Your Side, becaus eit was just too coincidental for the band to pass up. In some ways tonight's session is a bit of a break for all involved. We all worked magic to make it here tonight. As the Hamilton contingent pulled up I hear familiar voices but no familiar faces. It has been a while. In fact Haymaker, for which Pull Your Side is an extension of, was the first band we ever recorded in these studio 3 sessions. Jeff and Chris are sporting beards and I am reminded of the Chokehold reunion show on New Years Eve when a fellow band mate was chided for sporting such a beard. And although times seemed to have changed, the anger remains the same. Here are the songs recorded by Jonathon Hawkes at CIUT`s Studio 3.

1. Dark future
2. Plug-in generation
3. More cops, More crime
4. Meltdown
5. This is not a test
6. Throne of Priviledge
7. My troubles / 2 Headed snake
8. How to cope
9. Survival prayer
10. Looking back
11. New war
12. This too shall pass
13. Right Turn
14. CIUT ID
15. EXD ID

Aldo Edric of Punks and Rockers videotaped the session. Below is a clip of the night.

Radio - Sunday September 9th, 2012

We started off tonight's show with a tribute to Hits and Misses because they are closing down this week so we started by playing the song that the store was named after.

Then we went into a live interview with Demolition who drove down from Barrie. We got a sense of who they are, where they come from in terms of influences, some insight into their songs, and where they are going in terms of recordings and shows.

We played some new Canadian material such as the New School Jerks LP and the new Wasteoids demo.

And we finished with a demo by a band from Helsinki called Autuus. The name translates to mean Bliss, which could be true if you are a fan of a pan-Scandi sound in hardcore embodied by bands like Āäritila.

Have a listen to the show here.

Radio - Sunday September 2nd, 2012

For our Labour Day show we featured an interview with Chris Walter about his new book "SNFU: What No One Else Wanted to Say". Chris has just released the book on GFY Press and was in town two weeks ago to talk about it. In the little time that we had we spoke about the book, about the band from Edmonton, and about his other band biographies. I wish I had more time to go in detail about some of the band's more known songs, but we did what we could, but getting at some of the highlights. There are a lot more to read about in his book.

We also got to feature the demo of Pure Scum who are from North Carolina. In the recent issue of MRR the band is described as "Boston not L.A." era Jerry's Kids meets SOA meets "United Blood". All that and they start out with a song railing against school just two days before school starts. Who can't relate to that? You can get the demo through Sorry State.
