A.P.B. on CIUT tonight

With the recent vinyl release of the “T.O. Hardcore ‘83” comp there has been a rediscovery of an important part of Toronto’s punk past. The first band found on this comp is a little known band from Scarborough called A.P.B. I convinced the members of A.P.B. who were Andy Ford, Paul Newman and Buzz to come in to CIUT and tell their stories. Some of these stories are as far out there as a chance meeting with the 80’s rock band Journey that got Andy kicked out of the band’s hotel room.  They also shared stories of discrimination towards punks back in the 80’s in which the band gets guns pulled on them by Brinks drivers at the Morningside Mall. A.P.B. played with MDC in Buffalo at a Rock Against Reagan show. They played with the Exploited in 1983. They share all kinds of memories of the Toronto hardcore scene back at it’s inception. Tune in Sunday at 10:00pm for this exclusive interview and some unreleased recordings by the band.

Ride at Dawn “Chrome Pillars” ep

This is the band’s third recording but their first vinyl release. The band combines buzzsaw guitars to some dirty lo fi crust to give them a sound that relies on bands like EXTREME NOISE TERROR and MOB 47 for inspiration. There is a layer of noise to what already feels like an underproduced sound which makes me think of GAS CHAMBER, particularly on the song “A Bloody Threat”, but when the songs rises out of the BASTARD NOISE like industrial sludge the song comes blazing out like a LEGION666 rager, only to digress back into a dirge. This band takes you into unpredictable places, which makes it stand out in my opinion. And the guitar sound has a particular electric frying sound that keeps your attention. This is dark and raging. School Jerks "Control" ep

The SCHOOL JERKS sound is the same. Stripped down punk that is raw and ugly and conjours up comparisons to early BLACK FLAG without the Greg Ginn experience in terms of wankage. The songs remind me of early CICRLE JERKS so in some ways you could say that this is a lot like OFF before we hard any OFF recordings. Once again the band has self-recorded this which just adds to the raw sound and Tara’s has done another incredible piece of artwork that is part Pettibon in terms of it’s minimalism and stark normalcy and shittiness. More great stuff from this Toronto quartet. (Cowabunga Records – 311 Steam Drive / Genoa, IL / 60135 / USA / www.cowabungarecords.com)
The songs found on here are: 1. Screamer, 2. Control, 3. Ready to Die, 4. Ugly MInds, Ugly Faces, 5. Moral Addiction, 6. 4-F

Word on the Street "The Street is Watching" demo

Word on the Street is more than a literary festival here in Toronto. They are a straight edge band from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. They recorded this six song demo, which we just featured on last Sunday's show.

Their sounds reminds me of a cross between Go! and Straight Ahead.

This demo has a couple of pieces of artwork.

The band is:
Dexter Outhit: Drums
Ben Brennan: Bass
Cody Googoo: Guitar
Chris Murdoch: Vocals

Amd you can reach the band at
Blogspot: www.wordonthestreet902.blogspot.com
Contact: cody_cross@hotmail.com

This demo can be downloaded at http://wordonthestreet.bandcamp.com/track/word-on-the-street. the demo is also available through Crackin up tapes and Blank Stare records.
Chris and Cody moonlight in a band called Mean Streets with some guys from Mean Mug. They basically combined names of each other's band to come up with the name. It's a unique idea.

The songs on this demo are:

1. Rise to the Challenge
2. Cut to the Chase
3. H.R.M Mayhem
4. Steppin' out of line
5. Freedom of Choice
6. Round of Applause
