Surrogate Activity demo

Juls, the former singer for Margaret Thrasher, switched coasts. She moved from Vancouver to St. John's. From what I can gather in her columns in MRR it was for work. This is her second band since moving there. The first was called Rumours which had some kind of reference to Fleetwood Mac. Surrogate Activity is along the lines of a mid-tempo punk band. Lots of melody. And they way that Juls sings reminds me a lot of the singer from Sofahead. Juls is also playing guitar in this band, as well. They are a three piece. Think of Dangerloves or the Bayonettes in execution. The songs on here are:
1. Graveyards
2. Breakfast
3. Cut Loose
4. Toronto
5. Open
6. Worry Cycle
7. Where This is Going
Here is the lyric sheet. Click on the images to pull up better versions to download.

Sucio Poder demo

SUCIO PODER are a band from Melbourne Australia that features members of PISSCHRIST, SCHIFOSI, and SJN. They play a hybrid of sounds driven by their unique takes on things. They still do have a brooding sound in their TRAGEDY sort of way that comes from the SCHIFOSI side of the equation, but they are playing that mid paced punk that CRIMINAL DAMAGE has been developing. And it looks like they are singing in Portuguese. So this adds another element. With the language and the old school sound they have a retro feel, but there is a heaviness to their sound that doesn’t exist for their predecessors. It is murky and heavy like early DISCHARGE, but played at a punk pace. Great stuff. (Combat Action Tapes – 122 Argyle Street / Toronto, ON / M5V 2K8 / Canada) - SP

Resist Control demo

Resist Control are a brand new hardcore band from Buffalo. The band features Mike Gifford of RUNNING FOR COVER / SLAVE STATE fame. They take their name from the Born Against song, but they play a banrd of hardcore that is influenced by the power violence scene. Just blazing fast hardcore along the lines of RUNNING FOR COVER in that the music is played so fast that it sounds like it is about to fall in on itself. The bass is totally prominent and conjures up sentiments of PISSED HAPPY CHILDREN. This demo was recorded in April 2009 in the band's practise space. It is amazing sounding. The songs on here are:
1. Modern Times
2. Kill the News
3. Pale Imitation
4. Broken Eggs
5. Kleptocracy
6. Fallin' Apart
7. No Solution
8. Recipe for Success
9. Short Leash
10. Don't Want It
11. Act 1 Scene 1
12. John From
For more information about the band you can write Peterwalkee Records at 408 Richmond Avenue, Buffalo, NY / 14222 / USA or check out there website at www.resistcontrol.webs.com.

At Both Ends, Issues 9 and 10

This is a zine from Vancouver that I have never heard of before. It is unfortunate that I find out about this zine at the end of it’s life. This is the final issue of the zine and it combines Issue 9 and 10 together into a 142 page glossy zine. It is beautifully put together. There is full colour in a bunch of sections. The magazine is book bound and this is of coffee table stature. On top of that this package comes with a double 7” which has four bands each with a side. BANE and GRADE have new exclusive recordings and they team up with new bands UNRESTRAINED and BETWEEN EARTH AND SKY. This deserves it’s own review unto itself, but everything comes together in the finale of this publication. And the issues are split with a flip. The front cover reads one way and the back cover is issue 10 flipped on it’s end. The issue starts out with a tour diary of South America written by BANE. The next piece is an article on the van that ALL tours in. Now that doesn’t sound so exciting, but the piece was surprisingly interesting. There is an interview with Dave Larson from Excursion Records who also made the film Edge of Quarrel. I didn’t realize there was a big beef between him and Kent McClard, but this explains all the ads I used to see for Excursion Records in MRR and not HeartattaCk. There is a neat piece that collects reviews on SPARKMARKER. There was an interview with a vegan straight edge band from Rome called TO KILL. There is also an interview with the SAINTE CATHERINES from Montreal, who a lot of people have been digging. There is a piece on science fiction. And there is an interview with VERSE, who are a straight edge band from Providence, Rhode Island. There is a metal inspired band called A PERFECT MURDER, from Quebec that gets interviewed. Kyle Bishop, the singer of GRADE does a list of his favourite top 20 releases. There is an interview with SICK OF IT ALL. Ad the issue ends with a questions asked of some zine editors. Issue 10 starts out with an interview with SHAI HULUD, which I skipped. There is a piece on being vegan. There is an interview with Brian Clement who sings for a band called WAR BY OTHER MEANS. The interview is about Frontline Films, which is his film company he does. There is a great interview with a guy who masters vinyl on the process which is hugely fascinating. There is an interview with the Swedish band ANCHOR. Loads of material from Canada and loads of material on stuff involving straight edge. Rehashed "Code Black" CD

REHASHED is another crossover band fronted by Mike from DFA. REHASHED produce the same kind of blazing crossover that brought attention to DFA. Just manic crushing riff riding in the spirit of BEYOND POSSESSION, except this time there isn’t a bunch of other bands doing the same kind of hardcore. But I think it helped bring DFA back out of early retirement. Damn this continues to be great. Stop on a dime thrash that just pummels the listener.
The songs on here are:

1. If It's Not Broken, Break It
2. Amazing Grave
3. Without Warning
4. The High Cost of Living Rich
5. Good, That's Perfect
6. D-Beating a Dead Horse
7. The Adventure
8. Code Black
9. Luke's Song
10. Waste of Life
11. Darkness Destroyer
12. Five Stages of a Fist Fight

The Existers "Depreciation" CD

The Existers were a first wave punk band from Toronto and they released an ep back in the day. They were on the show a few years ago and played a live set where they realized the interest in what they were doing, so they went back through their tapes and re-learned the songs from back then and recorded them in a studio. This CD is the result of a self-produced CD by the band and it sounds incredible. The songs that appeared on the ep are re-recorded along with 8 other tracks from back in the day. The songs found on here are:
1. Future Shock
2. Spadina
3. Telex Love
4. (I Don't Wanna) Talk About It
5. Cake
6. Responsible Men
7. I Can't See
8. Never Think Big
9. Enchanted Cottage
10. Lena

There is footage from all four of these projects on the "What Makes ya Think You're so Amazing Baby?" DVD.
