This is the broadcast for Equalizing-X-Distort on Sunday September 23rd. On tonight's show we start out with a top 10 for August. We program some unique sers. I program a set of bands with straight edge roots and heavy sounds with local roots. Rob programmed a set of College rock that doesn't get played so much these days. I followed that up with some noisier contemporary garage. And D'Arcy pulled together two sets of hardcore with sounds that have been inspiring him. The demo feature was Negative Rage in which they cover the Dead Kennedys and JFA so there are some songs you will recognize.

Christian, Rick, Steve and Beav from Violent Future joined us tonight on EXD to answer questions about their new band. We also got to feature the new Unholy Thoughts release with some new compilations like the tribute to Japan's Laughin' Nose. Tonight's demo feature was the Instigation who are reputed to be from Shanghai and features a member from China, Japan, California and the UK. Violent Future studio 3 session

Violent Future are a new hardcore band featuring Christian on vocals, Mike "Beav" Huntington on guitar (Urban Blight), Steve Musgrave (Which Side / Bad Choice) on guitar, Rick Smith (Bad Choice) on bass, and Greg Benedetto (Stuck in the City) on drums. These guys are serious about their punk and there was a million collectors stories before the session actually began. Rick was having trouble with the effects on his bass. By the end Christian was shouting himself hoarse. Here is session recorded in Studio 3.

This is the Mother's Day (May 13th) edition of EXD and in honour of Mother's Day we started off with the Lucky Ones and a song called "Your mother's a man". Just a little humour to start off the show before getting into a set of material inspired by the student protests in Quebec, which see the provincial government making it too expenisve for kids to go to university, which really sees them pulling out of the investment in our future. So the first set is about how bleak our future is. Rob gets into some recent Ugly Pop 5 re-issues with the Hot nasties and the Rock and Roll Bitches among others. Violent Future demo

VIOLENT FUTURE are a new band formed out of former members of BAD CHOICE. But the band is more than that with the singer from URBAN BLIGHT playing guitar and the main city’s promoter, Greg “Stuck in the City” Benedetto, on drums. So there is a classic east coast vibe to the band because that’s the music that the members grew up listening to. Think of that primal sound hardcore sound that east coast bands produced while trying to reproduce the bands coming out of the early UK HC scene. It’s the link that makes sense out of seeing that guy with the leather jacket with the ANGELIC UPSTARTS logo on the back who was at the NEGATIVE APPROACH segment for “Why be something that you’re not” video. There certainly is the NEGATIVE FX or DYS sound, but there is also a CRIMINAL DAMAGE vibe in the songs where you can hear this creeping oi sound to the material. And the comparisons don’t stop there. Christian writes bleak lyrics that capture the dire times of the mid 80’s in the Thatcher/Reagan era. Songs like “Fatal Reality” sum up just how dire things have gotten. Or “Goon Life” becomes a metaphor with how bully culture has become all pervasive in society. This is an inspired back to basics release by today’s scene veterans.
