Radio - Sunday, October 27th, 2013
Tonight was our fundraising show for CIUT. We decided to take the theme, Sound of your city, literally and program an entire show of Toronto punk and hardcore bands that span the generations of the scene. You can hear the show on the player above or download an MP3 file of the show here. Thanks to all of those who donated to help the station make a dent in the unforeseen expenses that have plagued the station over the past six months. This will help us bring a better sounding broadcast in the future.

Valley Boys 12"
The VALLEY BOYS are a new band although they have been functioning as a group for a couple of years. But as a current line up the band is relatively new. Matt, formerly of the School Jerks, is the driving force behind the band. He is the principal song writer and the guy who has brought this group together. Matt brought in Jon from Brutal Knights after they had broken up but while Hassler was being formed. It is that fast paced garage that Jon brings to the sound. Jon also convinced a boyhood friend Kalle to play drums. This is the first band that I know Kalle for. Jimmy Vapid recorded these two sessions out at his new place in Oshawa and in the process convinced everybody that he could play bass for them. It's not like they needed convincing. But these recordings represent the band before Jimmy was on bass just knob twiddling of the production sort.
Matt loves the Modern Lovers so they start out this release with a cover of "Modern World". Has anyone been paying attention to that contest that is trying to get "Roadrunner" as the official state song for Massachusettes? The sound comes across like the TV Freaks meets MC5. Matt's vocals are similar to Dave's, but there is a fuller sound to the Valley Boys which comes from having two guitar players. Some of the songs like "Feeding Time" are so primal which works for this song. It is a song that repeats and is just pounded out but really gets into your psyche. Matt has a lot of observations like the pharmaceutical industry creep into life with the outrageous "Side Effects" that they can have on a person. And "Shooting Politicians" is about the incident with Gabrielle Giffords that happened in the States. The song "Auto Pilot" feels like how I get through many days and I take it as a statement on how life can become monotonous.
This recording is a collection of two different sessions but it sounds like one. It was originally released as an on-line demo through their bandcamp site, but Cut the Cord has pressed it as a limited edition 12", which I understand is sold out in the black vinyl and there are limited copies of coloured vinyl that can only be ordered through the label at this time. The songs on this release are as follows:
1. Modern World
2. Eyes on Fire
3. Feeding Time
4. Feels like shit
5. Pills
6. Rich Kids
7. Side Effects
8. Auto Pilot
9. Shooting Politicians
10. Fired

Radio - Sunday, February 3rd, 2013
This is the program for Equalizing-X-Distort on Superbowl Sunday and I had just heard an interview with Malcolm Gladwell equating the NFL to a bloodsport with regards to dementia so I started out with 7 Seconds "I Hate Sports", for which the lyrics of the song start out "I hate football games".
In Toronto, our Mayor is in the midst of his latest scandal, this one regarding election overspending, so we started off the show with bands that have written about the Rob Ford influence on this city.
Ivan starts out a set with a band from Mexico and also plays the Hygiene single which features a guy from the Toronto scene on vocals. He also gets the Feederz and the Comes and the Damned in a set.
Rob profiles the latest Ugly Pop garage series releases. Bands like A Passing Fancy and Northwest Company.
There was a second setbased around current events but more of an international nature looking at the Superbowl, the Idle No More protest at Lansdowne and Dupont, The escalating war in Syria, and the tech stories with RIM and Twitter. It is my version of "Riffing the News".
D'Arcy did a set of hard hitting hardcore.
Ivan did a second setof classics, this time playing Systematic Death and Icons of Filth and the Chiefs.
Rob did a set with Steel Pole Bathtub covering Cheap Trick.

If in barbed wire things can bloom, why can't I?
Tara Bursey, the fantastic artist who does all the great School Jerks covers, did a full page drawing for the January issue of MRR (#356). She was telling me that this is the first time MRR has offered up a page for punk artist. They have done some things in the past, but hopefully this will become a regular feature. Tara's drawing is based on a famous photo taken by Arthur Fellig who was a photojournalist more commonly known as Weegee, a phonetic interpretation of ouija which was given him for his ability to show up at the scene of a crime within minutes of it being reported. Weegee's subject matter mostly focused on urban life, crime, injury and death found in his native New York City. This drawing is based on a photo known as Their First Murder and the caption is taken from a poem writtne by a child in a concentration camp. Tara has brought the two together to create a piece expressing an inspiring message about building an ideal world and is best expressed on Tara's blog.

Valley Boys demo
The VALLEY BOYS are a new local hardcore band inspired by KBD punk, oi, garage punk, the ANGRY SAMOANS, rock n roll, old American hardcore and old punk. The band is made up of Jimmy Vapid (the VAPIDS) and Jon (BRUTAL KNIGHTS) fame. Jon grew up with the drummer Kalle who is from Cornwall. And the missing link is Matt Hitch who is on guitar and vocals and used to be in the SCHOOL JERKS. The band has just learned that Cut the cord that... Records (http://ctct-records.tumblr.com), out of Munster Germany, will be releasing the demo as a 12”. Cut the Cord that... has released material by NEON PISS, FOREIGN OBJECTS, and VACCINE among others so the VALLEY BOYS are in good company. Look out for P-Trash doing a 7” after that. You can download the demo at http://vboys666.bandcamp.com/album/valley-boys. (e-mail - vboys666@gmail.com).

Radio - Sunday, October 28, 2012
This program started out with a set of Hallowe'en songs written or performed by Canadian hardcore bands. That was followed up by a set up power violence and noise rock inspired bands which included the new Column of Heaven LP and the Veuve SS 12". We followed that up with a set of bands featuring women in the line up and included Sick Fix from Baltimore, and Criaturas among others. The next set featured a rare Polish band called Abaddon and a request from last week for Personality Crisis. We did a Black Flag inspired set with the new School Jerks and new Off! because they were in town last week. We finished up with a get up and go set that featured this incredible Japanese hardcore band named Think Again, after the Minor Threat song. Tonight's demo feature was a new Toronto group called Spearhead which features members of Total Trash, Snakepit, and Foxmoulder. Here is the playlist and you can also download the show.

Radio - Sunday September 9th, 2012
We started off tonight's show with a tribute to Hits and Misses because they are closing down this week so we started by playing the song that the store was named after.
Then we went into a live interview with Demolition who drove down from Barrie. We got a sense of who they are, where they come from in terms of influences, some insight into their songs, and where they are going in terms of recordings and shows.
We played some new Canadian material such as the New School Jerks LP and the new Wasteoids demo.
And we finished with a demo by a band from Helsinki called Autuus. The name translates to mean Bliss, which could be true if you are a fan of a pan-Scandi sound in hardcore embodied by bands like Āäritila.
Have a listen to the show here.
