Tonight's show features a mixed bag of punk with some themed sets based around subject matter. There is a set on Sex Ed curriculum featuring local band's on the topic which always surprises me how forward thinking the punk scene is. And there is a set that is pro-immigration punk songs. A Sex Ed Curriculum was introduced into the Ontario education system with the last government and the new conservative government is scrapping it kicking off a series of protests in various ways. But in looking back at some of the bands that have been on the show they have been writing about how the sex ed curriculum has a little short sighted specifically VCR. Pure Pressure studio 3 session

Pure Pressure is a hardcore band from Toronto that takes their inspirations form the straight edge sound. I first found out about them from the SHEXD crew and we featured their demo in July 2016, which was a couple of months after they released their demo. Karla was on the last episode of SHEXD and she told us that she was moving away after Not Dead Yet so we worked to try and get a a studio 3 session scheduled with the band before they broke up. It is unsure if the band is breaking up or not but they have a studio recording to release so there is more to happen with this band. The band features Karla on vocals, Rob on guitar, Greg on bass, and Nolan on drums. Rob played in Severe and currently plays in the Protruders. Greg played in Violent Future and currently plays in S.H.I.T. Nolan is from Calgary and played in Desgraciados and currently plays in Siyahkal. So the members in this band are busy, but who isn't these days? The band recorded the following songs:

A few weeks back, on SHEXD #11, Christina was one of the guest hosts who was participating in the show for her last time because she is moving back to her native Australia. Sarde mentioned that it might be a good idea to have Christina come in a guest host a show and tonight's show was the first time we could get her in. Christina has been involved in the Toronto scene in a lot of amazing ways, but she approached the show by looking at bands from here, bands from Cleveland and bands from Australia. Mary Tyler Moore passed away this past week. Although she’s not a punk she did represent a modern independent woman in the work world. The show took place in Minneapolis and Husker Du covered the theme song on their “Makes No Sense At All” ep in the mid-80’s. The song was like an unofficial anthem for Minneapolis, which is why it was so appropriate for a band from them to cover the song. With all the tributes to Mary Tyler Moore this week I found myself thinking about this cover.

This coming Sunday at the Garrison is a benefit for Freddie Pompeii, a guy we are trying to keep alive. Freddie has been diagnosed with cancer and we all know that medical bills are more expensive in the States. So a bunch of his friends who make up the first wave of the Toronto punk scene are getting together to play a show and we are going to start off with a few of them, starting off with Freddie’s first punk band the VILETONES. This is “Danger Boy”.
