Best Canadian hardcore releases for 2010

1. AK47 CD – Ripping revolutionary message played by Victoria scene veterans being played just as urgent as the way SEEIN' REED or BIRDS OF A FEATHER sound. They have loads to say and are dead on about their targets. Tony Goluza continues to be one of the most important lyricists coming out of Canada. (Reason - c/o Tony Goluza / 706 Yates Street / P.O. Box 8829 / Victoria, BC / V8W 1L0 / Canada)

2. VACANT STATE “Internal Conflict” ep – In listening to this I think that if NEGATIVE FX tried to re-write the S.I.E.G.E. “Drop Dead” ep complete with the droning rendition of “Grim Reaper” on the B-Side this is what you would get. (Deranged Records - 2700 Lower Road / Roberts Creek, BC / V0N 2W4 / Canada / www.derangedrecords.com)

3. URBAN BLIGHT “Total War” ep – The follow up to “More Reality”. Classic New York city hardcore with blown out production. And when I say blown out, I mean the playing too loud kind. Overmodulating because you set the amps to eleven. Think of CAUSE FOR ALARM or URBAN WASTE being played by some of the straight edge posse in Toronto. Featuring ex members of KEEP IT UP, KILL DECIBEL, and the non edge MOLESTED YOUTH member. (Static Shock - www.staticshockrecords.com)

4. NO PROBLEM “Your Eyes” ep – A project band from Graeme while WEDNESDAY NIGHT HEROES is on indefinite hiatus. He has assembled his roommate Matt from LET’s DANCE and some kids from some other local bands one of which is called THRASHTIC FIBROSIS that LET’S DANCE were talking about when they were in Toronto the first time. They have the same kind of chemistry to wrIte sing a long hardcore that everyone and their mother seems to harken back to a glory day of hardcore. Isn’t every day a glory day for hardcore? (Handsome Dan Records – 3244 – 31 A Avenue SE / Calgary, AB / T2b 0H9 / Canada / www.handsomedanrecords.com)

5. SCHOOL JERKS “Decline” ep – The second ep by ex-TERMINAL STATE-ers. It has improved on the first one with more BLACK FLAG and more off singing by Luke which adds the snotty-sneer ANGRY SAMOANS appeal that everyone since the Cowabunga review came out has been making. (Cowabunga - www.cowabungarecords.com)

6. SLOBS “Memory Lapse” ep – Montreal’s answer to CAREER SUICIDE. They mine the US hardcore renaissance sound using a bit more from JERRY’s KIDS than the FREEZE. 6 songs on one 7”. (Machette Records – 7889 Saint Denis / Montreal, QC / H2R 2E9 / Canada / www.machetterecords.com)

7. MADMEN LP – Everyone in this city knows Jonah Falco is talented enough to pull off a one man band. He has played every instrument in everyone else’s band in this godamned city. MADMEN was Jonah’s chance to sing. And if you have followed Jonah’s early bands you know he loves straight edge hardcore. So I can’t help hearing DYS in the drum sound. This is a collection of recordings over the past couple of years. I’m glad some of it came out on vinyl. (Bootleg)

8. FEAR OF TOMORROW “No Fucking Future No Way” ep – The INEPSY of Vancouver complete with Chany artwork on the cover and typewriter font lyric sheet. Weighs a bit more on the DISCHARGE side of the equation as opposed to MOTORHEAD. (Charged//Distorted - P.O. Box 21530 / 1424 Commercial Drive / Vancouver, BC / V5L 5G2 / Canada / distortvancouver@hotmail.com)

9. MOLESTED YOUTH “We’re Always Going to Have Breakfast Alone!” ep – Showcasing a new line up on this extended player, MOLESTED YOUTH have hardened the sound for more BLACK FLAG and less youth crew in the new material. They are still playing fast as fuck and very choppy with loads of influences from the STOOGES to GANG OF FOUR. They remind me of the Japanese band ABARUDAKO. (Deranged Records - 2700 Lower Road / Roberts Creek, BC / V0N 2W4 / Canada / www.derangedrecords.com)

10. CRITICAL CONVICTIONS “The Crisis of Modernity” ep – New band from Ottawa featuring folks from TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM and TRIOXIN 245. They are doing their best Reagan Youth impersonation. And the cover artwork by Pascale Arpin borrows themes from Hobbes and Foucault emphasizing aspects of social control in our society. Limited pressing of 300. (Critical Convictions – www.myspace.com/criticalconvictions)

AK 47 CD

This is a brand new CD by Victoria’s AK 47. Still at it and still sounding as urgent as ever. The chorus on the opening song “You’ve Got Nothing” is “Never Surrender”. Right from the get go we get evidence of the band’s revolutionary spirit. Great to see it alive and well from these angry old men. And because of it I can’t help think of bands’s like DEADSTOOLPIDGEON, MANLIFTINGBANNER, and BIRDS OF A FEATHER. Just ripping hardcore with a revolutionary message played by scene veterans. It gives me hope at a time when everything is so shit. A voice in the darkness if you will. AK47 come from the LARM school of hardcore, except that they do have melody in a “Screaming for Change” kind of way. The atrocity of New Orleans, numerous examples of racism, injustice, oppression are not lost on this band. I particular love the song directed at the scene regarding apologetic approaches to SKREWDRIVER. Finally someone calls them and their listeners out. There is enough material to go into how righteous AK 47 just on their political stand but I feel the song “Burn it Down” sums it up just bringing this shitty system down. 24 songs deliver twenty four calls to action. Heed the call. Read up more about the band at www.akfortyseven.net or write them at Reason Records c/o Tony Goluza / 706 Yates Street / P.O. Box 8829 / Victoria, BC / V8W 1L0 / Canada. The songs on here are:

AK47 "The Fucking Enemy" CD

This is AK 47's fourth release. This was recorded in the Winter of 2004 and is considered by the band to reflect the true manifesto of the band. Tony Goluza is the life force behind teh band and played in Nothing to Lose and Hudson Mack prior to starting the band up 8 years prior. The other mainstay in the abnd is Rob Nesbitt who played with Tony back in the Section 46 days. Jay Walls was the bass player for this band and used to play in Tough as Nails and War By Other Means. War By Other Means is a reggae outfit that Tony and Jay play in outside of AK 47. evidence of the roots rock rebel army is found in songs like "Arise Again". The drummer is Jamie Willis who used to play with Tony in Hudson Mack and prior to that was in M Blanket. The songs on here are:
1. Faded memorial
2. Nothing Left
3. Go Fuck Yourself
4. Why the Fuck Do You Think
5. It's All Got to Go
6. The Day After
7. We Should Have Known
8. Arise Again
9. Red Tide Rising
10. This is Not a Fucking Game
11. State of the Nation
12. To Serve Protect and Murder
13. We're Dying
14. Every Fucking Note
And the band has lyrics posted up for this record at http://www3.telus.net/public/goluza01/texts.htm#tfe_lyrics.

AK 47 "Free Palestine" CD

This is the band's third release. It came out four years after the band's split with Hudson Mack. At this point long time drummer Luke left the band. This was significant because Luke had played with Tony in Nothing to Lose, which was a band that preceeded AK 47 and really is a continuation of their work. Dave Morin, the band's original bassist, also left and Tony had played with him in Hudson Mack. So the line up on this release was very different from the first two releases. Jesse cahill initially filled in on drums but had other commitments, so this is where Jamie willis of Hudson Mack and M Blanket fame enters the picture. darryl Clark became the bass player and he played in a band called Pressure Cooker prior to joining AK 47. Daryl does the singing on "Texas Blood" and Bottle". The songs on here aren't as blazing fast as the band has been known to play and consist of:

1. 2-Bit Terrorist
2. Dare To Struggle, Dare To Win
3.Bottle
4. Dead Faith
5. Nihilistic
6. Prisonhouse Of Nations
7. Nothing
8. False Judgement
9. Defiant Days
10. Fire
11. Free Palestine
12. No Turning Back
13. I Won't Forget
14. Where
15. Texas Blood
16. Revolutionary
17. Sendero Lives
18. F.F.M.F
19. Empire In Decline
20. CPN (MAOIST)
21. Re-Education Camp #7

AK 47 "Now You'll Know" cassette

This is the first release by this new Victoria outfit called AK 47. The band was put together by Tony Goluza and features former comrades from Hudson Mack, Goatboy, Nothing to Lose, and Section 46. I have not heard this but it follows in the tradition of cassette only releases by Section 46 / Nothing to Lose bands that Tony has been involved in. In fact, it seems to be true of the Victoria scene, where a lot of it has only been documented in cassette only releases. This was recorded in the first nine months of AK 47 being a band. The songs on here are:
1. Red Sun
2. Tirana
3. Cultural Revolution
4. Mumia
5. One Out Of Three
6. No More
7. Beliefs
8. Today's The Day
9. A Bullet
10. We Will Free Ourselves
11. Oppression
12. Another Time
13. AK47
14. Sellout
15. Time's Up
16. Where Are You
17. This World
18. Doesn't Mean A Thing
19. Years
20. Re-Education Camp #7
The band has posted the lyrics up at "Now You'll Know".
