Sid's Kids studio 3 session

Sid's Kids are a punk band featuring Cleave Anderson on drums and Marcel laFleur and John Sutton on guitar and bass from Arson. The band is similar to the Screwed in that they focus on early punk classics. This group is a bit of a session band set up to host a punk / new wave night and have involved quite a few players from Toronto's early waves of punk. The band does some covers like the Damned's "Born to Kill" and the Saints "(This) Perect Day". Covers by local artists include:

Mickey Skin singing the Curse's song "Shoeshine Boy",

Chris Haight singing for Zoom and Viletones songs "Sweet Desperation" and "Does She Jump".

Fergus Hambledon sings and plays guitar on A Passing Fancy's "I'm Losing Tonight" and the Basics' "I Can't Help"

Barrie Farrell sings and plays guitar on the Existers "Never Think Big".

There is also an interview done with the group. One of my realizations in doing this interview is that this is a special group of people. The first wave of Toronto punks have remained to be active as a scene which is something I have noticed in other scenes. It is pretty special and continues to impact our scene in many ways. The other thing that needs to be said is that Cleave Anderson is the glue behind so many of these projects and his energy is infectious.

The session was recorded and cleaned up by Jon Hawkes.

Aldo filmed the session and it is amazaing what he was able to catch. Here is a link to the Punks and Rockers youtube channel

Review - Purity Control “Adjusting” ep

PURITY CONTROL is a great new hardcore band from Toronto that live in the power violence arena which is a place I like to dwell. The band features Payson who originally played in this little known band from Truro, Nova Scotia called CAPITAL DEATH. They were incredible and each of the band members have gone on to play in incredible bands (CAREER SUICIDE and the ENDLESS BLOCKADE to name two). Other members in this band moonlight in S.H.I.T. and ABYSS so the talent of this band is nothing to take lightly. They are power houses in their own right and when they get together they make this short sharp bursts of anger reminiscent of CROSSED OUT with the heavy bass driven structures found in PISSED HAPPY CHILDREN. These are cues from the some of the pillars in the power violence scene but the unrelentless speed at which songs like “Dear Life” are played at make you realize that this sound has been brought up to date. In fact, I have heard this described as breakneck bludgeoning music which I tend to think is accurate of the pace and heaviness at which PURITY CONTROL play. This recording was mixed and mastered by Will Killingsworth of ORCHID fame so that is something of note to all you Y2K emo violence followers. And if you like their recordings you really should see them live. (http://puritycontrolhc.bandcamp.com/)

Radio - Sunday November 25th, 2012

We started off tonight's show with a tribute to the great Toronto punk drummer Motor Mike Anderson who passed away last Thursday.

We also featured new Canadian material by the Drunken Knights (from Barrie), the Facials (from Montreal), and Concrete Asylum (from Dartmouth).

Get Shot is an inspired photo exhibition by one of the best punk photographers of the modern day scene. In his capacity as the singer for Los Crudos, Martin travelled all over the US, Mexico, South America, and Europe meeting so many great punks along the way. He has captured some of them in their bands making his work a testament to this scene that constantly gets criticized and ignored. Martin has been in many other bands from Tragatelo to N/N to Limp Wrist and he has played an important part in MRR and the scenes in Chicago and San Francisco. This exhibit will show off some of that. There is also a new book, which is different from the one published in Japan, which will only be available at the exhibit. Proceeds from this event will go towards the Will Munro fund for Queer and Trans people living with cancer. Will has had such a huge impact on this scene from working with his brother on the first ever hardcore fest that this city has ever seen which became the blueprint for Not Dead Yet to the Vaseline events that this city became known for. Honour his memory. The Hunt Club is at College near Euclid and the dorrs open at 8:00pm.

Zine - EXD - Volume 12, Issue 4

Start Dancing was an all ages punk dance organized by kids in the scene. Vera Bigall and Paul Dakota were the main organizers. Gerry Doyle provided the sound system, Dan Hughes provided the music, and Mark Sanders did security. Andy Ford would help lug the equipment down to the space whatever it would be. Sometimes it was a Legion Hall, other times it was a church basement or a synagogue. Start Dancing was like a high school dance but for punk rockers and mods. They happened between 1981 and 1985 every Friday night and soon they added bands to the mix. When i think back upon it now I think that Start Dancing had something to do with why Toronto has a propensity towards all ages shows. be a reason for why Toronto has always had such a strong all ages scene. They were a lifeline for a kid like me who didn't know how to get fake ID but still wanted to meet kids like me. One of my main recollections was the way that people brought records and put them on this portable turntable. It was a great way to turn people onto your new singles without everyone having to go out and buy the single. Money was tight. It was like a community jukebox. Thanks to Mark Sanders for agreeing to get everyone together with exception of Paul Dakota. This interview originally ran on the radio show, but I really wanted more people to know about this special part of Toronto's punk past. You can download a PDF of the zine here.

MRR Review - Herd of Wasters "Just three dudes havin' a real good time!" dbl ep

Herd of Wasters ae a new band from Saskatchewan that features a member from the recently disbanded Anti Social Club who were from Calgary. This new band self-released this double single and it was slammed in the November issue (#354) of MRR.

MRR Review - The Northwest Company "Hard to Cy / Get Away from it all" 45

This garage era band gets reviewed in the November 2012 issue (#354) of MRR. This was re-released by Ugly Pop vinyl.

MRR Review - Subverse "Aural Regurgitation" CD

Subverse were an old crossover band from Vancouver. They were totally on the anarcho political activist side of the punk scene and had a crossover appeal. Boss Tuneage from the UK has put together a retrospective for them like they have done for so many bands from this era. This review appeared in the November 2012 issue (#354) of MRR.

MRR Review - Dekoder "Between the Waking and the Dying" LP

Dekoder are a punk band from Montreal and despite the goth reference in this review, the band plays a more mid paced style of punk that has become more associated with bands in Sweden and Portland as of late. You can here their earlier demo at bandcamp. This review appeared in the November 2012 issue(# 354) of MRR.
